Shadow Ridge Golf Club
About
Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.
Options? You want options!
Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.
The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.
"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Beautiful resort Photo submitted by MagecD on 10/08/2012
Do we really need greens running faster then 13, 14, 15?
We have been playing this course for years once or twice a year on our visits to the area.
The green on this course are very seep with serious 8,10, 12 and large huge breaks on them. We have been playing here a couple times a year on our trips to the area. However the greens this time were running what seemed like well over 13 and it was nearly impossible to get even a an 8 or 10 footer close at times.
I missed a four foot down hill putt that I just barely tapped to get it moving and it ran about 45 feet off the green and down an embankment.
On another hole I had a really long putt that had about a 15 foot break in it. It nearly stopped about 3 feet from the hole, which would have been a great putt. But then it picked up speed and ran off the other side of the green and down into a collection area. I was further away the when I started.
With a million recreation golfers leaving the game every year, do we really need these kind of conditions on a public course where people are just out to have a little fun?
I love this course and will probably give it another try. But they really need to rethink those greens and get them back to the way they used to be.
FANTASTIC GOLF COURSE !
YES IT IS A RESORT COURSE WITH WIDE FAIRWAYS & NOT TOO TOUGH WITH NO WIND BUT IT WAS IMMACULATE IN AWESOME SHAPE WITH GREAT FACILITIES TO PRACTICE-- WONDERFUL STAFF BOTH AT COURSE & VILLAS. THE WEATHER WAS AMAZING! WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK :)
Excellent golf experience
The only Faldo course in the Palm Springs area lived up to its reputation- challenging but fair; interesting but not eccentric. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Course was in good shape but the tees were a little chopped up. I would definitely recommend it.
Just a GREAT course...beautifully designed holes with a large variety
My wife and I enjoy playing this course every year and she finds it very lady friendly with few forced carries. Put it on your list of must play courses..
Great course!
A little less expensive than many courses of the same quality in the area. Course was in excellent shape. Not too challenging but certainly not easy either. Fun course.
Nice layout - great condion
No one can beat this place for care & conditioning. The course is extremely well maintained & features interesting holes.
Lots of bunkering, interesting holes, all different.
Great Faldo layout, typical Faldo bunkering & undulating greens . Excellent condition, especially for the time of year, Nov. 30, 2012. Best greens we played over the entire week! Would recommend if your an avid mid to low handicap golfer. Probably wouldn't recommend for most lady golfer's unless lower handicappers.
Good Course
Very undulating greens, a real challenge.
Nice layout, and was in good condition.
Good restuarant and bar.
Great golf course, perfect condition, great pro-shop, great staff!
Everything from the bag-drop to putting my clubs back in the trunk at the end of the round was fantastic!!
will become a favorite
very attractive course with plenty of challenges without being impossible to play. greens fast and in good shape. lovely fairways following overseeding + a few weeks so carts alliwed on the fairways.
This course is a must play!
With so many courses to choose from in the Palm Springs area, Shadow Ridge is one of the most enjoyable, well manicured and challenging to pick from. From the staff to the practice facility, all first class.
Marriott's Shadow Ridge is a First Class Golf Course
I have played Shadow Ridge enough in past years to get spoiled by its manicured condition. This year, I arrived while the course was closed for re-seeding and had to play elsewhere until it opened. I played a variety of courses with slow, bumpy greens prior to my first round this trip at Shadow Ridge. The SR greens were fast and true. They roll them everyday after they have been cut and they are perfect. The tee boxes are pristine, flat and well maintained to provide 4 different levels of play (7006, 6621, 6204 and 5158 yards). Play was cart-path only because of the recent opening, but they should be opening the off path traffic soon.
Preparing for seasonal overseeding...
The resort was beautiful - but the course was underway for the overseeding process. Unfortunately, the fairways were mowed down and brown, there were many ant piles everywhere, and I just wished upon booking, I was advised or would have known we would be playing under these conditions. Some holes were not as attractive as others. I imagine the course in prime season is absolutely amazing but for the price I paid - given other courses of this caliber were only a fraction of their regular season fees, wished the fees were more in line with those courses.
nice, fun & interesting course!
You could just sense "Sir Nick" everywhere at this place! Very fun and a good test of golf too! Very nice clubhouse, great staff and practice facility 2nd to non! Now it was the end of a very hot summer and they had just "SCALPED" about 1/3rd of the course. It was still playable and ALL THE GREENS were still very puttable. Most of the holes were "pleasing to the eye" with great area views too! I'd go back in a minute!
Nice Course - But a Bit Pricey for What You Get
I played this course about 1 week before they planned to overseed. As such, the course was a bit dry. However the greens were still in good shape, and held accurate approach shots well. This is a nice course, but I don't think it is worth the extra money that they charge in comparison with some of the other courses in the area. The course is challenging, not because it is long (it really isn't), or has tough driving holes (most are fairly easy). The reason this course is challenging is because the green are medium to small, are above the level of the fairways, and have false fronts and severe contours. This makes getting close to most pin placements almost impossible for the average golfer. I hit many approach shots that I thought were very good - only to find my ball had rolled over the green or had backed up off of the green. Faldo courses place a premium on extremely accurate iron shots!
Fantastic Faldo Facility
Superb Faldo designed course with amazing greens and interesting water features! You expect Nick Faldo to walk out at any moment ....... the course is cleverly designed around the Marriott Timeshare Units and the golf shop and bar are wonderful.
Looking forward to play more in the future,
The course was in great condition. Staff was very friendly.
Top notch course.
Course is well maintained. Location is excellent. Staff is very helpful and friendly.
Course knowledge is invaluable, and any tee is a fantastic challenge.
Unbelievable price. I could play the course over and over and not grow tired of any hole.
