Talega Golf Club
About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Disappointing
Had not played here in quite a while and buddy wanted to go back, so we booked a Saturday twilight time. We both were disappointed. Even with 10 minute tee times, groups were stacked up on each hole and we waited on every tee box for groups to tee off. Fairways were in fairly good condition, but tee boxes were a little dry and beat up and greens were like putting on old shaggy, spongy carpet. They were slow and inconsistent. Trash cans were overflowing all over the course and we couldn't get bathroom codes to get into the bathrooms. Plus there was no beverage cart on the course and the snack shop was closed at the turn. Would expect more from a course charging this much for green fees. Was very disappointing and I won't be going back anytime soon.
Terrible conditions
For 80 bucks at twilight these conditions were so bad. Heavily overgrown greens, so bumpy and bushy. Tee boxes were hammered. This is my second time playing here in the last month, figured it wouldn’t be as bad second time around. Seems as if there’s no maintenance crew for this course. Such a shame because it’s a beautiful course. Don’t waste your money. Rate of play is ungodly slow and conditions are horrendous
Mediocre
Pace was solid no complaints there. Greens were beat up, and like putting on your living room carpet. Fairways were just okay. Around the greens patchy as well. Just not really good value unfortunately.
Avoid This Course is a 2 at Best
I told myself a year ago I’d never play here again after the course was in terrible conditions. Fast forward a year and I will never ignore my own advice again. Great layout but conditions were gross. No two holes had the same sand, grass or consistency! Literally every bunker was different sand! Every single green was long and it was clear they don’t roll their greens, you feel like you’re walking on a sponge with footprints all over each green. I played twilight so $60 didn’t break the bank, but if I paid more than that I probably would have tried to get my money back! Never again. Fred Couples designed it so layout is cool, but conditions were a joke, he’’d probably be mad if he saw this place.
Good but not like it used to be.
Been playing here for over five years. The condition of the course has slowly been deteriorating. Crab grass and brown patches everywhere. The foliage around the course was better this time I played but a lot of the bushes were overgrown last time. They stacked our tee time 5 or so minutes apart. Round was 4.5 hours. Still fun but not as premier as it used to be and hard to justify the $$$$.
Course OK but Needs Attention
We are local and have played this course a few times. It’s a fun track and normally in great shape. While the course was pretty good, it was the in the worst condition we have played ever it. The greens were all really shaggy and slow. There were a fair number of underwatered/brown areas on the course. One water hazard was only half full. If a course wants to charge a full market green fee, it should have a fully ready track. Mow the greens, water the fairways and fill the ponds. If for some reason they cannot do this, they should discount the fees.
Greens redo
The layout and challenge of this course is good but the greens are like Hawaiian sponge grass which grip and change direction of your putts. Nice pace if you play during the week but I can see why it would be slow on busier days. Overall the fairways could use some help and the greens need replacing but if you score the cheep hot deal it's worth it.
No staff
No refreshment cart or staff in the snack bar on a Saturday holiday weekend. Sad.
Not worth the money
No ball washes. No trash cans at tee boxes so beer cans and other trash are all about the course. No beverage cart as well. No Sunday brunches any more. So where is all the money going Mr. Cho? Last time I will play here. This course is well on it's way to being worse then Shorecliffs.
This course is in pretty bad shape overall.
Greens and fairways are quite literally spliced in with different types of grass. I’m shocked that they’re asking for $100 per round. That’s pretty steep considering the poor condition of the greens, sand traps and fairways. Looks like they’re cutting back on quality. Also they’re Marshall isn’t really effective in keeping pace up towards the afternoon time.
