Talega Golf Club
About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Very challenging course and difficult greens. If prefer to play at San Juan hills for the price.
Nice Day of Golf
Nice course, but I had mechanical issues for first front nine then had a internal repair and fun the rest of the back nine.
Thrud Round Here
Nice course. Tough. Lots of terrain and barranca. If you hit anything errant, it’s lost. It was a challenge but it was fun.
Nice Course
Overall beautiful course, some blind shots that require playing the course a few times to get comfortable. We were hit into on one of the blind holes while we were in the fairway hitting our second shots so I have to stay aware of that. Overall a beautiful course with plenty of space between the holes and nice elevation changes. The greens were a little shaggy compared to when I played before but overall a great value.
Shaggy greens.
Place could be nice. It isn’t well taken care of. Course tends to be very unfair if you don’t know the layout. A lot of good shots ended up being penalized. Potential here but needs work.
There needs to be a Marshall to get people started on the right times and not even have teetimes late to where you can't get 18 in before dark.
Could Be A Fun Course If Maintained
I live right by the course and usually give it a chance about once a year. Lets start with the good: Layout is fun and challenging which is the strength of the course. A driveable par 4 on the back. Elevated tee shot on 11. It's a unique course in a good way for sure. Some nice water features (if working/turned on) as well. They did a great job finally replacing all of the bunkers with fresh sand. They were unplayable for many years before that - rocks everywhere. Staff is friendly and easy going and there's two breweries and a distillery close by! Artifex is the best!
Now for the bad: It really comes down to course maintenance. You can tell they cut corners everywhere. The greens were green (except a big dry spot on 2) but way too fluffy and slow, I mean really slow. Many looked like the surface of the moon as if they haven't been rolled in weeks. Not really fresh unrepaired ball marks either, but like bumps and low spots. Overall the greens were nicely designed but the lack of maintenance made some basically unplayable. There was also a lot of collection areas on the fairways that were full of unrepaired divots. Is it that hard to fill them once a week at least? Around the greens there's tons of little grass mounds that are super annoying and should be removed. Fairways were short but need more water. Some holes had nice rough off the fairways but most of it had bled into the and off of the fairways so there was no real definition. And what's with all the dead trees? Take them out for crying out loud and put in some new ones!
So like every year I hope for the best and leave disappointed because like I mentioned., I can walk to the course and it has a lot of potential if it was maintained correctly. I guess I'll be at the SC Muni again this year. Its in better shape and a much better value by far.
back 9 too slow
every time i have played Talega, it's the same issue. the back 9 pace is unacceptably slow. you need to do what arroyo did an make it a policy (including signs), that require golfers with handicaps over 14 do NOT play from the blue or back tees.. If high handicapers or beginners play from the whites, it'll speed up pace of play. for the hardest holes, consider moving the white tees to a 'manageable' spot. thx
Not worth the money
Course is in bad shape. No access to driving range. Practice green doesn’t even have holes. Could be a fun track in an amazing climate but something isn’t right at Talega. I live 10 minute drive away and will not be spending $125 for weekend green fees and cart there again.
Decent course
I liked the overall layout of the course. It is challenging especially after the first 4 holes. Definitely worth playing but I wouldn't pay full price at this time of year. There are several bare spots on the course. It probably will be much better in another month or so. I would not spend $100.00 to play.
Beautiful course, not sure worth $
Beautiful course, greens in excellent condition, fun design. I’m a beginner and it wasn’t too overly frustrating. I enjoyed playing here. Fairways are very hard and brown and muddy in places. Their CV protocols are strict, you can’t even sit on a bench outside 15ft away from anyone else, a little over the top but safe.
