Talega Golf Club
About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Overpriced
The track was ok. Some weird blind tee shots and bunker placements that don’t add anything to the experience. Not very well taken care of for the cost of the round. I paid $90 and the quality of the course was more akin to a $40 muni. The staff was nice but I would not recommend this to a friend. Can get far better value at other SoCal courses within an hour drive.
Great course for the money
This one i usually get as a hot deal on Golf Now! This is a hidden gem, not many people play at this course, probably , due the difficulty of the tract. I can find tee times all summer long for an affordable prices. I recommend this to golfers of any level.
Conditions
Pro shop, cart barn and snack shack staff are awesome... course conditions are worse than most munis, which is sad given how nice of a layout and setting.
Riders Only
A very challenging course routed through the inland hills of San Clemente. Caution, there are several looong rides from greens to the next tee. Never seen anyone walking the course. Tight fairways and well-maintained greens make a good test for all skill levels.
Talega
Perfect greens.
Fast, tight fairways.
Variable bunker quality.
Beautiful, challenging layout with five par 3’s and five par 5’s.
Highly recommend.
Poor training of staff
"From #12 hole on, had a young maintenance guy on the greens. He literally went from hole to hole in front of us, knowing we had to wait on him to hit to every green. It was like freezing the kicker. I finally asked him on #15 to please let us play through (there were just two of us), he laughed and went to the next green. This isn't the first time we've had trouble with the maintenance staff here. I decided to talk to the guys at the pro shop and tell them to please let the maintenance staff know how rude it is a players. The guy at that pro shop informed me that if we play early, we just had to expect maintenance workers. He was rude and unprofessional. If he were my employee, he'd be retrained or fired. It's the time of year they want people to buy their players card, they might want to rethink their strategy of how to entice people to be loyal to their club."
Lotsa roll !
Greens were tricky but putted true. Fairways were long & hard.
a challenge
Very Hot day. Golf cart was very hard to handle. One of fairways was being torn up. Greens not in very good shape. Fairways dry.
First time I played this course I was favorably impressed. This time two months later, I felt the course conditions were sporadic at best. The golf cart was horrible and must have had an alignment rod missing..
Good/Bad
Great layout friendly staff but for goodness sakes fix the course conditions and get some updated golf carts and GPS. This course would be an absolute gem if the owners invested money into the course and paid attention to detail. There is no reason for it to be that raggedy.
Fun course but could use some work
Fun track, greens in good shape, fairways mostly good but the traps are really bad with little sand and hard packed. You have to take note of the cart tips as you can find trouble overdriving or out of play based on the layout if you just aim straight from the tbox. Pace was about 4.30 for sat 9:36 t time which is nice. Overall a good experience although its no way worth the $110 standard rate. At $79 golfnow deal it was a reasonable weekend rate.
The pictures are a lie
Speaking of a lie. If you like playing off dirt lies then this course is for you. The course use to be in great shape. The layout is awesome. The sad part is they don’t take care of it and it is over priced at $67. Way over-rated course. Go play Tijeras they take care of the course.
Slow slow slow
I had great expectations for this semi expensive course but many disappointments including slow play and overall condition of course. When checking in I asked how many hours I should expect and I was told 4 to 415 hours. I was on the 8th tee box and it had been already 2hours 15 minutes so I called the clubhouse to ask what’s happening and they tell me the course is all tied up. Yes this happens on a Saturday. But where’s the Marshall??? When we finish it’s 5 hours and 15 minutes!!! 5-10 minutes of wait every single hole. The tee boxes seemed like they put markers in the fairway. Long long grass at all teeboxes.4-5 holes had major repairs going on. Most greens were not flattened so they were very bumpy. Fir the money it was not much better than my muni course but I price was almost double. The only thing I really enjoyed is the course layout and friendly staff.
Enjoyable round of golf
Three of us on vacation from UK have played 5 different courses and this was right up there. Greens were a little slow compared to others but that may be because they needed a cut. Would certainly play Telega again.
Great Track
You will not be disappointed playing this track. Lots of personality and holes that keep you on your toes.
Course is Looking good for Fall
Played my usual Friday afternoon round. Course is in decent shape with the greens starting to run a bit faster. Bunkers still an issue with either super soft or rock hard inconsistencies. Fairways are good and rough is average. Pace of play under 4 1/2 hours which I expect.
Slow- poor shape
I try to play this course a couple times of year hoping it will get better.... ugh always slow, course is in horrible shape , some greens are fair. Fairways beat up, tee boxes shaggy, beat up, chipping areas run from bare to did we forget to mow?
Save your money...
Great layout but lacks resources
Talega is a great track however some $$ needs to be reinvested into the course. Hole #3 has been under repair for at least 2 years. When hitting out of the sand expect the club to bounce on dirt ( no sand in the traps and they use to be beautiful). Greens in great shape but a little slow. Long story short put some money and u have a south county gem.
