Talega Golf Club

About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Good course & pace
Tee boxes could use a little love, greens are great though and the pace was nice at 4.5 hours.
Not in great shape
This is a decent course, but not in the kind of condition it should be for the cost. There were some ugly spots in the fairways and all the tees were in horrible shape. Otherwise, it’s a nice course. It has some interesting holes. It’s challenging but not unplayable. The greens very undulating but not impossible. They were also much slower than you’d expect, which was helpful because there’s so much slope.
Challenging Course
I liked this place because the design reminded me of some courses at home (Germany) . Especially the back 9 are tough but fun. Fairways were in a good shape and the greens were challenging.
Only the pace of play was too slow.
After all I had a great time with some nice gays playing with.
Hard and not fair at times
Look, the conditions were good, green were fine fairways ok but a really unfair golf course in my opinion. A lot of blind shots especially on the back. If you are new to the course and don’t have GPS you will have problems. I would suggest they need better GPS in their carts. I walk 90% of the time and the back is not walkable. Glad the starter suggested it.
I recommend playing this course with someone else who played here before.
Gorgeous Championship Course- tough layout
Great pace of play with a tough golf course. Expect to lose a lot of golf balls. Due to the dry fairways I would be reluctant to pay top rate. Greens are in great shape and tricked up. We had fun, but expect big numbers. Lots of potential blow up holes.
Definitely wasn’t worth the Holiday Rate
Paid $150 today (Thursday) to play. Definitely wasn’t worth it with the conditions of the course. Greens were maintained but the rest of the course was rough. Beat up tee boxes and some pretty dry fairways. I like the course layout, it’s pretty challenging. The pace of play was great (finished in under 4 1/2). Staff was friendly but not a cart girl in sight. If you want to hit the range before your round, be advised that you have to drive down the street (about 5 minutes) to use the range. Would play again if I’m not paying that atrocious rate.
Good course; dry time of year
Played Talega mid December. Course was a bit dried out across the board. Early morning dew helped on the first few holes, but after that quite a bit of extra yardage on drives. A few other reviews have critiqued the upkeep, I'm willing to give them a little grace with it being the driest time of year, but the course could probably use a little extra $$ towards conditioning.
Course layout is pretty good, with a mix of challenging holes. Front 9 is noticeably shorter and easier, whereas the back is longer and more difficult.
Areas of weakness:
- They could really upgrade the computers in the carts. They're black & white screens. They have to be as old as the course iteself.
- No beverage cart on course is a bit strange for a course at this price point. It wouldn't take much for them to put that in.
- No on-site driving range; you have to get in your car and drive 5 min to get to their practice facility...this is a pretty big miss on design.
Great layout and lots of wind
Greens in good shape, fairways tend to be very thin, sand traps inconsistent, some good some lacking sand.
Still OK
Sadly fairways and tee boxes have many bare spots making it a little muddy from a recent rain. Fortunately the challenges of many of the holes makes it a fun course to play.
