Foxtail Golf Club - North Course
About
Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park offers two championship courses, the North and the South, situated in the heart of wine country. The North Course originally opened in 1974 but underwent a major renovation that completely redesigned the layout, improving its conditions and making it more challenging. The par-72 North is considerably longer and more difficult than the par-71 South. The North features multiple doglegs and strategically placed sand traps that will test even the most experienced players. To make the golf course a bit more approachable, water hazards don't play a prominent role, though they do appear on a few holes, and the forward tees are very player friendly. With 36 holes available, Foxtail G.C. is able to host tournaments and events while still having another 18 holes open to the public.

Challenging but fair
The course was in good shape considering all of the rain we have had, good job staff. I started @ 11:45 and finished @ 4:15. The pace was good considering it was Friday, greens rolled nicely, but it seems as if only half of the people who golf here replace divots or repair ball marks. Overall a good day, shot an 86! Go early and finish early to avoid the crowds.
Good luck finding your balls
I've played this course many times. I know that in fall when the leaves fall its hard to find the ball if it goes even a few feet off the fairway. I played it recently and there were grass clippings all over the place. Not just that, there were white flowers everywhere too. It drove me crazy knowing I hit the ball only yard or so off the fairway and I had to drop it because we couldn't find it. I usually enjoyed this course but the conditions were pretty poor off the fairway. Another problem we experienced was a very muddy spot off the 11th hole where my friend stepped off the cart (we were on cart path only) and his leg sunk down mid calf in mud. Quite dangerous actually. He could have twisted something or worse off, broken his ankle or leg. I hope this is something the club can examine and correct because I do enjoy playing here, when the conditions are right.
Course staff
The pro shop staff member was rather unfriendly and rather rude upon arriving to play. He seemed as though he didn't want to be at work.
What a jungle
I realize that they have had a ton of rain lately, but the fairways were horrible with the tall grass. A fair warning would have been appreciated, because we never would have played. We ended up quitting after 9 holes because we lost so many balls.
Good golf course
Great value. Course is tough but fair. i would have given higher reviews if it were not for the bunkers. There has been lot of rain and bunkers have not been maintained. Need to spend some time on repairing
A Solid Sonoma County Round
I played Foxtail North for the first time since it was called Mountain Shadows and I was very impressed by the improvements that have been made there. The test was a challenging one from the blue tees and, despite the large amount of rain we've received this year, the course was damp but far from saturated. The rough was lush and a fair but a formidable test and the fairways were great.
The greens were in excellent shape and rolled well and at a good speed, especially considering the wet weather.
The only area lacking is the bunkers but I was told they are making a sizeable investment to improve them and I look forward to returning to see it.
The layout is challenging with well placed bunkers, water hazards, and a variety of dog leg holes shaped by trees.
Anti-GolfNow Attitude
When I checked in, the man behind the counter treated me with an anti-Golfnow attitude, just because my teetime was a hot deal teetime. I am quite done with tolerating that kind of attitude in golf course staff. I suspect it begins at the management level. The management made the deal with GolfNow of its own free will. How foolish to discriminate against customers because they purchase teetimes made available on GolfNow by the course management!
Fine course for me
Affordable for everyone and a friendly nice people around.
Until next time...
Foxtail North was my "go-to" golf course in 2015 & 2016. As far as 2017 goes, they won't be seeing a single cent from me. Reasons why...
1) Even though we've recently received quite a bit of rain in Northern California, the course conditions were terrible. The greens were extremely furry and bumpy, and bunkers are completely unplayable. For as much play the course gets and for as much money people are paying for their rounds, you definitely expect more. I'm a walker so I'll always pay a bit less than those that ride, but still.
2) The staff aren't friendly and the marshals have no knowledge of the conditions. When we discussed the conditions of the bunkers with course management, their response was "It's not worth putting the time and money into them". When we checked in with the starter we had basic questions like "How is it out there?", and "Have the greens been mowed?", and the starters response was "It's wet, and I'm not sure if they've mowed". It's obvious this guy was merely collecting a paycheck, and didn't care to be informed.
3)There was a 4 day window of decent weather prior to the day we played and it was absolutely apparent that the course had not been worked on by the crew. I completely get it that the course is wet and mowing fairways ISN'T an option, but the least that could happen is bunker maintenance (pumping out water, rebuilding the faces, raking) and mowing of the greens.
It's sad to see such a great course going down the path that it's going. Until I hear that they're putting in some serious work to this course, I won't be stepping foot on it.
Swamped
Overall this is normally a decent course, open and fairly forgiving. But unfortunately this wasn't a great day. I knew it'd be wet but did not expect the swamp it was today. First off I reserved the tee time on GolfNow and there was no indication of restrictions. Got there and found out the front nine was closed due to water and would have to play the back twice to get in 18, no discount offered. Decided to play anyway and in reality the whole course should have been closed. It was an absolute swamp both on and off the fairways. We walked and got covered in mud. Letting people play even cart path only seriously tore up the place. Hopefully they'll be able to make repairs.
Beautiful Mess!
Don't recommend playing in the Fall or winter time. Leaves everywhere and the place is full of puddles and mud. Beautiful course but floods after rains and lose ball if hit 1 ft out of fairway. Great staff!
Great deal I couldn't pass up!
Couldn't pass up the deal! 10 bucks including cart? Awesome! Rain has made rough pretty tough, so hit the fairway and hitting greens much easier!
Extremely SLOW...
I'm not a golf snob, nor do I complain often. Overall the course was fine, I'm not even complaining about bumpy greens.. I understand public courses just keep booking groups. However, we had a 1:57 tee time and teed off 40 min late. There was a 6 person group ahead a few groups. I only got 11 holes in which was a bummer.
BTW - the lunches are terrible, I'd take a hot lunch from a public school any day over that. To be fair, the canned beer was great!
Great deal!
First off, you have to temper your expectations. This is the South course, after all. It is not nearly as nice as the North course. Furthermore, the two 9s here are totally different from each other. The front 9 is pretty ratty, except for the greens. Expect big, bare dirt spots throughout the fairways, and terrible bunkers! Just a suggestion to the grounds crew... PUT SOME SAND IN THE BUNKERS!!! However, the greens were in pretty decent condition. As far as the back 9 goes, it was (as always) in MUCH better condition. Only a few spots in the fairway which were bare or less than ideal. Greens were very nice, although a little slow. And although the bunkers were a little better, still not ideal.
So, as long as you don't expect too much, you can have a good time on this course. The best part of our round? The fact that we paid $10, which included a cart!!! Can't ask for a better deal.
sand
sand traps are too firm with not enough sand and wet.
Great course for value
You cant beat the rates here on this moderate to easy track. Expect to have fun. Friendly staff !!
Course was in great shape.
Great Value for playing the North course.
