The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes
About
The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes is a Tom Fazio design that is challenging, but with five sets of tees it is versatile enough for players of all skill levels. Fazio deftly utilized the native wetlands and numerous lakes that are interspersed across the landscape, incorporating them along the expansive fairways and angled greens. The tricky greens have been carefully molded and contoured to offer a variety of pin placements. In addition to the water hazards, there are also numerous strategically placed bunkers lurking throughout. The golf course will test your shot-making skills as well as your creativity. To complement the golf course, Hilton Head Lakes offers an equally impressive 36-acre, double-ended practice facility with target greens, bunkers, multiple practice greens, and even a par-3 short course.

Not recommended for winter golf
I do not normally do this, but this course is in abominable shape currently. I've played there before in summer, so I figured its a nice course that does not break the bank, so lets bring guests there. In the end I refunded them their money out of my own pocket, It was embarrassing. To start, bag drop no one was there (it was mid morning, no excuse), we took our bags out and put them in the rack. They did load them on to a cart when we went inside, then expected a tip (hand was out) Sorry, nope, you weren't there to do your job. Check in was ok, zero personality, if you don't like your job, get another one. No starter in site for over 30 minutes, so we finally gave up and went out. Pace was slow due to one group of 4 women who we caught after 4 holes, and they started almost 40 minutes ahead of us. We had many holes where there were 4 groups on them. Them on the green, us in the fairway, a group on the tee, and then a group sitting in their carts behind them waiting. Never ever saw the ranger, though we found them and their cart at the clubhouse after. Fringe and greens were an absolute mess with Pua Annua grass, every putt bounced the entire way to the hole. Un-puttable. Bag drop at the end, the staff were finally attendant, and they asked how things went, and my wife, told them that was the worst course I've ever played. The attendant apologized and stated they know they are having a large problem with the greens and tee boxes. (So, charge less for now!!!) Can't really argue, as the course itself was in bad bad shape overall. Does not look like they are taking any efforts right now to fix anything, yet charging the same as they do in the better seasons. I have played there in the summers and it is a nice course, but currently, I have already told many in the last 24 hours to not waste their money playing there right now.
Disappointed!
Sorry to say I was very disappointed when I called the course today, not with the course itself but with the customer service! My wife and I come out here for Feb. and Mar, this is the only course we play more than once. I knew that for the last couple of years you have had an issue with the poa on the greens. I called today to see how the greens are this year were doing. The young lady who answered my call would not answer my question. All she would say was the course was in" good shape:, but refused to say anything about the greens. Again very frustrating from a course we loved to play!
Needs attention
Friend and I played yesterday set our tee time back and hour later than scheduled due to “frost” which is was 60 at 10am so most definitely no frost the greens was over ran with crab grass very bumpy never got a true line driving range was tight and rough and most of all pace of play was stupid slow took 6 hours to play 18 and we normally can play 18 in 3 maybe 4 if we working on our game so overall 4/10 for this course and the conditions
Great layout-needs some help
As a former golf course superintendent I am a little more critical in my evaluation. I always balance was the green fee paid in line with the course conditions? The fee was a little high for the quality of course.
First, the amount of Poa on the greens did affect the putting. With dormant greens grass this time of year it can’t be helped. However, a program to cut down on the amount of annual bluegrass should be started. Second, there were many tees in need of attention. Really, an easy fix if the will to improve is there along with the financial commitment. Finally, the condition of the rough grass could be improved. It was very inconsistent from hole to hole. Work on turf quality from the fairway to the tree line.
Also, pace of play needs to be addressed. Our round took 4:45 hours to complete. Started at approximately 10:20 am. Two very slow foursomes of ladies was the problem. Talked with marshall and he was clueless as to what to do about the pace of play.
Hilton Head Lakes
Course is in nice shape for winter conditions. The grass is dormat on the greens and fairways. All the traps were groomed and in excellant condition. While the layout is fairly flat, you can't walk this course on account the distance between holes is HUGE. ( yes , really far)
Besides having a very friendly staff, the fairways are 2 to 2 1/2 times wider than your normal course ( no-joke) and at times there are bump-outs to the right side of the fairways for right-handed slicers. I swear, I felt I was teeing up on the driving range just about everytime. At the end of the day, a fairly easy but long course.
You can really grip & rip here, if you wish and likely to find your ball on a bad slice. Water looks to come into play a lot, but it actually did not. I hit so many greens in regulation today (12) because the Greens are super-sized too, but never came close to having a chance at a makable birdie. So lots of pars , ZERO birdies and more 3-putts than I wish I had. Recommend playing.
Worth The Drive To Play
I’ve played here previously and reviewed it positively.
I'm happy to say it continues to be good value for the money. Checking in was easy, unfortunately the driving range was closed so no warmups. The starter “Al” was welcoming and gave us few tips on some of the holes, even escorting us to the first tee.
The course was in good shape and greens were fast/consistent with fluffy sand in the bunkers. The course is very forgiving and pretty flat providing consistency of play. Unless you’re lucky enough to encounter the alligators along the course. We saw three!
The front nine has lots of home’s laid compared to the back nine which is more scenic.
We were a twosome and waited to tee off on every hole for the twosome in front to clear. It wasn’t a big deal since there weren’t any gaps and the weather was great. If it gets more busy on weekends, I can imagine they might need a course Marshall to keep things moving along.
We’ll return while trying to avoid the busier times
Worst Drainage Course
I got this course on a local Groupon. It had rained overnight, but not a lot. I was fine with cart path only but it was a warning when they had the driving range closed, and those tees are high. My drive on number 1 was pretty good and I didn't expect much roll...after I trampled through standing water to my ball, there it sat next to its divot. Second shot, same thing (par 5). Basically the first three holes were unplayable. Not only that, it had been so wet they hadn't been able to mow in days which really showed the multitude of grasses in the fairway, including a bunch of crabgrass. After 9 holes, my shoes and socks were gooshing water out with every step. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, but on the way back to the condo I stopped at 2 other courses and jumped on fairways near the road and they were fine. No casual water.
I don't know what Tom Fazio was thinking. I visited Pete Dye's Harbour Town Golf Links today and in his cool little museum, there was an exhibit showing how much Pete valued good drainage. Fazio needed that lesson.
Great Layout - But
The course layout was very playable. The course conditions were fair. Significant amount of crabgrass, even on the greens, effecting putting. Tee boxes could use attention. Yet did enjoy playng the course
2nd Time playing
Much better condition then 6 weeks ago , there were no weeds on the range this time. Clubhouse food selection could be better, same employee checks you in for food and makes the food. Very friendly staff but seems odd process
GOOD ALL AROUND
WEATHER WAS GOOD, THE COURSE WAS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE.
This course discriminated against my mother and made her cry.
I want to start by saying my family and I have played this course multple times in the past, and have liked it. It's a good bang for your buck and usually in decent shape. But I cannot recommend coming here with how we were treated and how my mother was discriminated against.
It had rained the previous day and was cart path only. Conditions were wet, but not unplayable or dangerous. That is not a problem for me and my father, we were more than willing to comply with that. My mother, however, is ADA protected, and she would need assistance. Golf courses are still required to be ADA compliant under Title III and are required to make reasonable accommodations, even when it is cart path only. The DOJ has stated as such as well, allowing those under ADA protection to use carts even if cart path only, as it would not fundamentally alter the service and it qualifies as a reasonable accommodation. And again, we were only asking for her, as she was only playing 9, while me and my father would abide by cart path only rules.
When I spoke to the women at the desk, she flat out said no, they would not allow that. And if that was going to be a problem with us, then she would not be able to play. This being a weekend, the superintendent was not present for me to speak to.
When we spoke with the marshall at the start, we explained that she would need help, and at first, he was very accommodating. He understood, he gave her permission, and that was that we thought. We tee off and are halfway through the 1st hole when the same marshall comes back. This time, he comes with an immediate attitude, visibly angry and a macho, tough guy tone. He comes over, and now tells us that the course will not allow her to take the cart out, and forces her to either be on the cart path, or to leave the course. Mind you, all we had done up to then, was bring the cart into the rough, we weren't even going to drive it on the fairway or up to the green, and we were doing so with his initial permission. When we had asked for the handicap flag she could put on her cart, he insisted they didn't have any, and basically told her to get off the course. I don't even understand why he came back so heated, considering the last time we spoke with him he was going to allow it and we were just doing what he initially gave us the green light for. Yet he acted like we just spat in his cereal.
But here's the kicker. My mother insists we keep playing for the 18 we paid for, and she goes to the clubhouse to get her money back for the round. As soon as the women at the desk (same one I had spoken to) refunds her, THEN she drops the fact that she messaged the superintendent, and he said that he would allow her to drive the cart onto the course. At that point, my mother wanted nothing to do with them. She left the course, and she ended up crying on her way home because of the callousness of the staff and the discriminatory behavior she faced. She was berated and embarrassed, and only after giving back her money and cancelling her round, did they say "Oh yeah, turns out you can play after all." It was like finding out just when you paid that they aerated the greens. They withheld that bit of info with intent.
And then, after the round, when we spoke to a different marshall, not only did he confirm that she should have been allowed to play, but that they HAD handicap flags for the cart that she could have put on.
It was unfortunate to have the staff treat her this way, and I would please encourage the management of this course do better when it comes to training their staff on proper ADA compliance going forward.
Signed, a longtime and now former customer. Apologies, but with the way I saw my mother get treated, I don't think any of us will be back anytime soon, if ever. Far too many courses around here to play.
Nice Round of Golf
Took my grandkids for their first time on a championship course. This was ideal for that sort of activity as the pace of play was good and of course was not crowded. This course was in good shape compared to earlier times I played it. Greens real good. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Fun round of golf!
