The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes
About
The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes is a Tom Fazio design that is challenging, but with five sets of tees it is versatile enough for players of all skill levels. Fazio deftly utilized the native wetlands and numerous lakes that are interspersed across the landscape, incorporating them along the expansive fairways and angled greens. The tricky greens have been carefully molded and contoured to offer a variety of pin placements. In addition to the water hazards, there are also numerous strategically placed bunkers lurking throughout. The golf course will test your shot-making skills as well as your creativity. To complement the golf course, Hilton Head Lakes offers an equally impressive 36-acre, double-ended practice facility with target greens, bunkers, multiple practice greens, and even a par-3 short course.

Golfer Reviews
I Don't Know Why I Continue To Play This Course
This is the closest course to where I live. My preferred course was closed for aeration yesterday, so I decided to play here instead. This course is overpriced for its conditions, gives no discount for locals, and the folks in the pro shop are obnoxious. As I checked in the pro shop attendant said there were no openings for a single for the next hour. I bought a bag of range balls, also overpriced for the size of the bag, and on my way to the range decided to stop by the starter to tell him I would be available if there was a no-show to go out earlier. Well, the starter wasn't there and there was a twosome on the tee box, so I rode up and asked if could play with them. The twosome were terrible and slow (but very nice people) and at no time did any groups behind us run into us at all until the sixth hole when a single rode up. How could the tee sheet have been full if no other groups caught up to a very slow playing group? My beef is that the pro shop attendant told me the tee sheet was full and it obviously wasn't. This isn't the first time this heppened to me here.
Fun Layout, Great Value
We were in Savannah for a family get together. This course was close to where we were staying and was very fairly priced. Regarding pace of play we were behind a foursome of older players. The first nine players was slow. We passed them at the turn and the pace was great. The course was dry. That was fine for me but if your like to hit down on your irons you may see it differently. The greens has recently been punched and were recovering. The staff was friendly, the price was great, the fairways were wide open.,really fun to play. There is not a lot in terms of a restaurant or bar experience.
There was a very large alligator (10+ ft) that was guarding the blue tee box on one par 3 hole. He walked toward us when we tried to move up to another (green) tee box. He then continued straight up the par 3 fairway when we went to the green. Added quite an additional challenge to that hole!
Can't complain...
Pace of play was excellent, but that's because nobody was on the course. The golf course is generally in good shape, except for a few weeds and bare patches. Greens were recently aerated; they might be fine in a few weeks, but they were a bit rough for this round, causing some putts and chips to stray offline.
Great layout
Loved this course, beautifully laid out, pretty open for tee shots. Fairways in great shape, only issue was the greens were newly aerated and sanded. Beautiful course!!
Nice Layout But Very Poorly Maintained
This course has the possibility to be a great round
of golf but the lack of maintenance makes it unplayable.
Course design is very nice as it meanders through many natural areas.
However the greens have black fungus and poa annua everywhere. Fairways and tee boxes have areas with no grass at all.
If I was a homeowner in this community I would be embarrassed about the condition of this course.
Don't know if the new developer owns the course but it will take years of hard work to make this playable again.
Absolutely avoid this course.
Greens???
I played this course years ago when it first opened and really enjoyed it. I thought I’d give it another try this year since their rates were pretty reasonable. Staff was welcoming and helpful and the starter did a great job pairing me with a couple of other players and getting us out a little before our tee time. Fairways are wide open and give plenty of room for less than perfect shots. Our disappointed hit when we got to the first green. It was atrocious! Some sort of black fungus was scattered all over it and the grass was extremely uneven. A straight out rolled offline in different directions as the ball encountered bump after bump. We were hoping it was just anomaly on the first green but every single one had the same issue.
Could be good
Tee boxes and fairways very dry - not the fault of the course. Greens terrible - fault of the course. Like the forgiving fairways and they were balanced by the traps approaching the greens. Overall I'd play again if the drought conditions ease up
Poa Annua, Poa Annua, Poa Annua
Ok people, when you do a review and say there is grass on the greens and fairways, please understand that Poa Annua is not a grass- ITS A WEED!!! This is one of the worst infestations of Poa I’ve ever seen. Please understand that the course is screwing everyone on this, it only takes about $18K a year to spray to prevent this. Obviously would be more for the fairways, but this place is way too far gone to ever recover from this much Poa. The bumpiness of this makes it impossible to putt and there is very little Bermuda left in the fairways to get a good lie. Good layout but will not be back. There are much better values either on island or closer to HHI, especially using Hot Deals. Hilton Head Lakes should be ashamed of the conditions but at this point they don’t seem to care.
Fun course to play, greens a little rough but a great layout
Beautiful golf course
The parking lot was full I drove around the lot two times waiting for someone to pull out, I had to park along the curb. The Marshall sent out the three that I got paired up with so I had to catch up with them on the 2 nd hole. I went to the bar to get some beers for the cart and no one was there. Other then that I enjoyed the 16 rounds.
Wide open
Nice course with wide open fairways. There are a few challenging holes that force targeting shots to make it more challenging. If you keep your ball in play, it’s a fun track.
Staff was super friendly and the amenities were nice and clean.
The greens roles true, but did have some growth issues that looked like they were being addressed. I say give it a try and enjoy!
Really good course
I’d rather make the drive from Savannah and play at HHL than almost any of the courses around here I love it
This course has a nice layout with lots of water, but nothing really unusual. Several of the lakes have alligators which is kind of entertaining. There are a few tricky holes with perilously placed sand traps. Some of the greens were under maintenance with large patches of sand. The snack bar at the turn was terrible. The group I was playing with had to wait 10 minutes for someone to show up and prepare a hotdog. That was really the most negative thing about our round.
