About
Designed by Clyde Johnston and popular PGA Tour star Fuzzy Zoeller, the Island West Golf Club is a course built around natural marshland and follows the landscape presenting a rolling, tree-lined course.
As one would imagine a course with Zoeller's fingerprints, Island West in Bluffton was built to be a fun, entertaining play, and has succeeded in its mission. Playing to 6,803 with a 129 slope rating from the tips, it's a solid test for the skillful yet playable for the not-so skillful.
Water comes in to play on 10 holes here, so the bold will have many risk-reward opportunities. Accuracy off the tee is a must on many of the tree-lined holes, yet other holes feature wide fairways. Island West is exactly the type of course you'd imagine Zoeller being a part of, but Johnston's expertise also shines through.

Disappointing decline since last year
We played here a year ago, and felt that course was decent value for money. A tricky, narrow layout, but fun to play.
This time we were very disappointed.
Many of the tee boxes were in rough shape, and almost all of the greens were in very poor condition.
A lack of basic maintenance was obvious, and a mower clearly hadn't visited most of the grass (tees, fairways & greens) for several days
Greens and fairways are in great shape, tee boxes need a little work. I liked the course design it was very playable. Staff was very helpful and friendly. I will be back.
Disappointing
Played Island West while on vacation. Was disappointed in the course conditions for the price. Tee boxes were in bad shape, lots of bare spots and weeds. Greens also had weeds growing in on the edges. I enjoyed they layout but for the price I will look elsewhere next time.
A bit disappointed
Played course in past but conditions today were not the best - fairways were good but greens were slow and somewhat weedy at times - tee boxes were worn a bit also - would probably not play again on this trip
Pleasantly Surprised
First time playing this course. Reviews were all over the place but I found it a very good value. Staff was great and clubhouse is nice. Some tee boxes are tired and can use some refreshing but still playable. I played right after a morning rain making it cart path only which is okay for me. Fairways and greens were in pretty good condition considering the amount of rain we've had lately. Overall it's worth looking into if you've never played it. Good layout with lots of wildlife. Some very challenging holes with narrow approaches making for ball placement a must. Recommend checking it out.
Pleasantly Surprised
I've never played this course as reviews of this course are all over the place. My experience is as follows...Staff and clubhouse are very nice. I played after a morning rain making it CART PATH ONLY which I didn't mind. The fairways were in pretty good shape considering all rain. No standing water in them. Greens are in decent shape as well. Some bunkers have suffered from the rains but overall playable. Several challenging hole with narrow approach shots and heavy guarded with bunkers. Lots of wild life to see. I believe this course is worth looking into if you have not played it. I feel it was a good value for me.
Staying in Hilton Head...try Island West Golf Course
Staying on Hilton Head island and looking for some moderately priced golf options. Anything on the island is at least $85/round per player island West was 1/2 that price with a GolfNow "hot deal" so we grabbed it. It was an easy 30 minute drive from the island. The course was in pretty good shape although some of the greens were a little rough in spots. The folks at the club were super friendly. We got quite a few restaurant recommendations from George (from Maine). He was great...very personable. We will be back.
Isle Be Back!
Enjoyed the round. Surprized there weren't more people on the course.
Fairways and greens are suffering from the same drought the other courses here are.
Staff was friendly and accommodating.as we were allowed to go off early.
Needs work
Nice layout tee boxes, fairways, greens good condition rest of place leaves a lot to be desired. Ugly to put it in a word. Clubhouse and grill is in great condition. Pace of play restrictive. Never saw a single marshal. Signage from green to tee is awful, especially at the turn. Now that I know what to expect I’d play again without disappointment.
Nice golf course
Conditions were good, pace of play wasn’t too fast. Never felt rushed. Moderate difficulty level with nice big fairways.
