Harbor Shores boasts a Jack Nicklaus Signature layout that plays through a stunning landscape of forest and wetlands. The golf course tumbles across hills and ravines blanketed with hardwood trees, providing a round that is as scenic as it is challenging. Thanks to the massive white sand dunes that edge along the water, the course has a truly links feel. When combined with the trees and natural water hazards provided by the landscape, the golf course becomes a truly formidable test. The seaside location also guarantees that some holes will be played into the prevailing wind. The trio of holes from the seventh through the ninth plays along the water and offer scenic views of Lake Michigan. There are 10 holes that border the Paw Paw River, Ox Creek, and their surrounding marshland.

Challenging layout, greens interesting

Layout is what would be expected for a Jack Nicklaus course. Undulations on the greens border on ridiculous but well maintained.

Pristine, but too tricked up for the average player

The fairways, greens and tees are in perfect playing condition. The bunkering adds to the views, they are deep, large and abundant. The greens are huge and undulating to the extreme. When lucky enough to hold one, good luck from there! Now, about the views...I expected Lake Michigan to be the focal point. I actually saw it once. You cross several busy roads over the 18 holes and traffic noises and construction noises are not what I expect to encounter on a course of this caliper. There are views of delapadated factories, industry, and the surrounding area/neighborhood is getto. I thought HS would compare to Bay Harbor GC near Petosky, but it fell way short. I think it's overpriced, but if using your Golfnow Rewards this may be a good choice, just don't expect pure golf serenity.

Bring your "A" game. You will need every shot in your bag.

Much too difficult for my game. Everywhere I look on this course there is either water, swamps, sand traps, or severely sloped greens. Harbor Shores has certainly earned their 137 slope rating from the Gray tees. That said, it is a beautiful course and, if it gives back decent funds to the city of Benton Harbor, I thank Jack Nicklaus for designing it. If you are playing well, this is a course to be enjoyed.

Wow is this course nice!

The golf experience at Harbor Shores was spectacular! The staff were very helpful right from the bag drop off through the end of the round. Practice tee is magnificent, and that is just the start of a beautiful location and well manicured golf course. Hole # 7 is the signature hole in my opinion. This is a challenging golf course with a number of special holes and great customer service. I highly recommend the experience.

Great course

Challenging course with many forced carries over wetlands, traps , and water. When you play this course, you gain a great deal of respect for all the senior PGA golfers who break par on this course. It has large undulating greens and you will not get around this course without three putting or worse if you put your approach shot on the wrong tier of the greens. We had a great time.

Scenic quality friendly challenging course.

Friom the moment we arrived they could not do enough for us. Friendly and courteous staff . . . and Rodney, the starter, defined well the task before us laying out each hole, with tips on what to avoid, and how they might be played. OMy partner and I best the other teams in our group, so they have already made plans to return for a rematch.

A must play in Michigan!

The course is great, the staff is wonderful. I had one of the best days here. Don't be fooled into thinking the yardage isn't that long, it's all about the approach shot, and the green. Not the type of greens you want to hit with a long iron.

excellent course would play it daily f given the chance

Absolutely in my top 5 courses i've ever played. We were able to get a tremendous rate through golf now.com and would play this course ever day for the rest of the year if given the chance. We showed up and were treated like royalty from all staff involved and it really has me talking about this course to friends and family. I will be back soon for sure as long as i get a good rate again as i'm not a wealthy individual but i sure felt like it that day.

Nice Course-very slow play the day we we there.

Excellent overall facility but it took a looong time to complete 18 holes. We got bumped from our tee time for some "first name basis locals" and were told they played fast, nope. We watched them go from hazard to hazard, and beer cart to beer cart. Having grown up playing Point of Woods, another outstanding facility in the area I expected more from Harbor Shores. I sent 2 different emails to the staff and received no response, may/may not go back to play again!

Challenging difficult greens to read a must play course

This course is great, we played from the back tees with wide fairways you should not have much trouble hitting the fairways. Now the fun starts, you will have to pay attention to your approach shots, a miss here will mean par or bogey. Stay out of the rough, enjoy the scenery and don't short side yourself at the greens. What makes this course great in addition to the staff and the scenery will be your ability to nail your approach shots. You can 3 and 4 (or more) these greens. It is not the speed that makes these greens difficult, it is the pin placements and being able to read the subtle brakes in them. And last the bunkers have very soft sand, unlike most of the other bunkers in Michigan, this is very soft sand. If you end up in a bunker keep in mind, "soft sand=swing hard", "hard sand=swing soft", Swing Hard! The price may be a little high but this is a great value in a local venue that you don't want to miss. This may be hard to believe, but this place is better than Pebble Beach.

Great course and friendly staff

Great course with amazing greens that play extremely true. Not an overly challenging course, but ball must be placed well to score well. If you miss off tee or find yourself on the wrong tier of the green, prepare yourself for high scores. Course was in terrific condition and it was great to get the opportunity to warm up on driving range and practice greens.

Challenging, but thoroughly enjoyable.

We were able to finish only 11 holes due to an unexpected storm, but my enthusiasm wasn't "dampened." As a female golfer, I know that it can be hard to find public courses that don't put the forward tees in ridiculously easy locations, assuming that women don't know how to play the game. Harbor Shores provided a real challenge from tee to green. It was an altogether good experience, and I look forward to playing there again, hopefully the entire 18 holes next time. A tip: Practice your putting before you go!

5 to 7 Really Memorable Holes

Played here on Friday morning during their temperature special so only paid $46. Holes 6 thru 10 really make this course special. 7 is what everyone in your group will talk about, especially when you climb the hill to the green and see the big lake, don't get that opportunity at many courses.
Even though aerification holes were noticeable the greens played fast and true. It was amazing to see how well the grass was manicured so lush right next to cart paths, I didn't notice one patch of dead or brown grass. That's what you expect when you play high end courses like this and they deliver.
Don't think about walking, I don't think they'd let you as you wouldn't make it up or down some hills and 30 to 90 second drives in between tees are much longer when you are walking.
I'll go back for sure and try to catch a non-windy day and ask for a yardage book or range finder. You'll need it your first round or 2 as many tee shots are set up to confuse you.
