The Highlands Golf Course
About
Editor's Note: The course is temporarily closed.
The Highlands golf course is one of three courses owned and operated by Meadows Country Club. In addition to the Highlands and Meadows Courses, there is also the Arthur Hills-designed Groves Course, an 18-hole executive course. The Highlands Course has an "old Florida" layout equipped with plenty of trees and water that tumble across gentle hills. You'll be playing through majestic oaks and towering pines as you take on this challenging-but-fair test. Narrow, tree-lined fairways and small greens demand accuracy but generously the reward well placed shot. The golf course finishes with a tricky par 4. Your tee shot will to be straight and accurate to avoid the fairway bunkers on the left and right, positioning you for a mid iron back into a green that sloped front-to-back and guarded by bunkers on both sides. There is also a lake to the front left.

Decent course
We have been away from Florida for 4 years and as we are from Canada all of the courses cost us an extra 35%, therefore we have to choose courses like Highland and Groves. As my wife golfs with me need to seek out value.
Before COVID we were playing higher status courses, but not now, the world has gone nuts.
This course is a great time, if you want a challenge you play from the tips, the course changes personalities from the from to the back nine due to the geography. Some of the holes on the back nine have outstanding greens, as good as anywhere dur to the lay of the land.
Carts are great with USB, staff excellent and over value is a 5, my rating of 3 is the actual course itself as some holes are 2 and some holes 5 plus.
I do recommend this course as well a sthe groves.
Decent course.
Overall decent course. Some tee boxes need tending but overall the fairways and greens were good. Enjoyed the layout. Staff were friendly and courteous.
Not very good
I play this course at least one time a year, and it remains...."not very good". There are always bare spots on the fairways and greens. I gave a positive review to it's associate course, The Groves, but not this course.
Highlands 2024
Much improved over prior years .. the greens were good and the fairways are perfect
Highlands at the Meadows
Staff were welcoming and friendly. The course is a good test and fun to play. Some fairways were cart path only due to being wet. But a good overall experience and would recommend it. Thanks
Disappointed to come back
Played it a few years ago. To come back was disappointing. The course needs definitely more maintenance and care. The fairways were „soso-lala“. Some of the greens were pretty bad. The tee boxes, specially the white were disastrous. Some of them had no grass, just sand. Definitely not playing here again. Not worth the money.
Not recommended
Played there for the first time in a year. The course is in worse shape this year than last year.
The greens have bare spots everywhere-no grass. Tee boxes and fairways are terrible and they are charging $85.
This course is off my radar.
Need rangers
Our twosome played entire round behind slow playing foursome. Wouldn’t be so bad except there was no one for two holes in front of them.
Not good value
I like this course. The layout is good. The staff is super friendly. Unfortunately, it looks like the owners aren’t putting enough effort into maintaining the course. The biggest issue is green conditions. I played here 1 year ago and there were dead spots, but for the most part these spots didn’t impact play. This year the dead spots were worse and you could see the ball bounce/change course because the dead spots were deep into the green. I do not recommend this course.
Great course back to good form
I’ve played the Highlands hundreds of times. The last three years were terrible. Staff is always friendly but the course had deteriorated into terrible shape. It is 98% back to being a great course. Hole six still has issues on the green but overall the course is probably one of the best public courses in the area for layout, fairways greens and amenities. Best round I’ve had here in years, well worth a play and better than most area courses.
Just a Thought
I like this place, and will continue to play here, but golfers who need handicapped assistance should take note. The carts are programmed to stop going forward when taken off proscribed pathways, which I understand. This limitation can be overridden electronically, but there remains many places where a person of limited mobility must walk too far or climb too steep. I walked over 80 yards to hit my second shot on a par 3 that had gone left of the green away from the cart path. Fortunately I am recovering well and soon may not need accomodations, but earlier in my recovery, I would have had to abandon balls and eventually the round prior to its completion. Before anyone else says it, I realize that if I would hit the ball straighter and with more consistency, the problem would not be as severe. I am working on improvement in all areas.
