The Highlands Golf Course
About
Editor's Note: The course is temporarily closed.
The Highlands golf course is one of three courses owned and operated by Meadows Country Club. In addition to the Highlands and Meadows Courses, there is also the Arthur Hills-designed Groves Course, an 18-hole executive course. The Highlands Course has an "old Florida" layout equipped with plenty of trees and water that tumble across gentle hills. You'll be playing through majestic oaks and towering pines as you take on this challenging-but-fair test. Narrow, tree-lined fairways and small greens demand accuracy but generously the reward well placed shot. The golf course finishes with a tricky par 4. Your tee shot will to be straight and accurate to avoid the fairway bunkers on the left and right, positioning you for a mid iron back into a green that sloped front-to-back and guarded by bunkers on both sides. There is also a lake to the front left.

Fun time for the money
I had a great time playing the course. I am a high handicapper and the course is fairly easy so it added to the fun. The greens are a bit rough but they are a few weeks out of aeration. The lack of a driving range to warm up for "non-members" makes it difficult. If you have a bad back or old bones, no way to warm up and get your swing in check before playing. All in all, for the money it was fun and I will play again.
Good Golf Course, Excellent Value, Needs Some Work
I've always liked the Highlands although haven't played it in a couple of years. There is a good variety of golf holes with a tighter front 9 and a back 9 that is more open and a little longer.
Others have mentioned that the conditions were bad-it's actually a 'tale of 2 nines'-the front (which used to be the back) nine is not in good shape and the greens are in desperate need of help. The back 9, though, is a completely different story, the greens were fine, particularly for a lower cost public course. The same holds true for the fairways, green surrounds and tee boxes.
We had an 8:04 tee time and finished in about 4 hours and 15 minutes (the group in front of us was pretty slow). I'm guessing later tee times would be playing in closer to a 4:30-4:45 pace.
I wouldn't let the conditioning get in the way of playing the golf course again, it's very good value and a fun course to play.
Good course
I would definitely recommend this course to anyone. Right now they have issues with the greens but it is probably late summer issues. I bring several friends to this course. Just this time the greens were not good.
Highlands
A beautiful Sarasota day for golf. Course was in decent shape but the greens had some spotty areas of sand or dead areas. Always enjoy this layout!
I was glad it rained
We played 12 holes before the rain started and we were happy it did… I have played this course for years, and this was worst condition I have experienced.. Greens were slow and bumpy with weeds and bare areas on every green.. Rough was beyond rough, overgrown to the point balls were hard to find A lot of work is needed on every part of course
You're not a member...
If you're not member then they will let you know with how you are treated. From the cart boys (grown men), to the staff in the pro shop, to the condition of the non-members course, the Highlands. There is no driving range for non-members other than a hitting your own balls into a net. The greens are in terrible shape and werr in need of a cut. They are ao slow and the worst roll that putts where being conceeded in our group. Some greens had large areas of just dirt. This is by far the worst part 72 course in Sarasota...maybe in all of SW Florida. There many much better courses in the area. Do yourself a favor and skip this dog track.
Love the course but greens need love
I will need to have therapy after seeing the green on the 2nd hole. Love the layout and the staff always treats us great but the greens need work to say the least. Will still be back for more!
Very nice course
Course looks and plays good
Greens are slow but they are in good shape
Perfect Course for Florida Summers
My playing partner and I appreciate the staff upon our entry to the course the condition of the course and lay out of the holes are challenging.
Plus the course has several Ice & water stations to help you get through the Hot Florida Summers!
New Management
New management on this course is making it a turn for the worse. Grew up only having played the meadows courses last 40 years. Couldn’t pay me to play again. Worse course out of the ten I have visited this week in Sarasota. From the tee boxes to the greens it isn’t well kept at all. Over fertilized with major grass damage.
Extremely rude people working and completely not knowledgeable of golf, the course, and what a course should look like. My dad talked to someone in the pro shop after we played as we live on the course and have played it for 40 years and wanted to give positive feed back on the down turn. It wasn’t received well and actually we were told this is how it should look.
I waited to review till I visit other local courses to see there conditions to fairly review since I’ve only played the meadows in Sarasota. Would appreciate if the meadows, our home would step up and make this course great again. We miss it and hate to see the downturn due to poor management.
