This course is great for juniors and players just learning the game.
The course is a nine hole course with only 3 par 4 holes. Great for practicing with short to med irons. Economical and easy to schedule on short notice.
perfect course
The course was in good condition and had perfect weather. I will recommend this course to all veterans and my friends. I really enjoyed the round of golf and will return.
short course
This course was in good shape due to the rain the past week. I like going here to work on my short game and it did the trick.
Football golf??
Golf course doubles as a soccer golf course? I don't get it. Holes for the footballers are on the same fairway as the golfers. It just made my experience a major pain, and a much longer round for myself and others.
interesting little course with challenges
Course was in excellent shape but we had trouble, maybe because the course is used for a lot of training for youths, coordinating the score card with the holes and finding the correct holes, since there were a lot of extra flags and practice areas around on the actual regular course. The speed of play and ease of playing was tremendous, but maybe mainly because we were almost the only ones, actually, playing the course at the time.
The course is owned and operated by The First Tee of Greater Austin. If you go on to our event calendar at harveypenickgc.com it will tell you when the kids will be on the course for summer camps, etc. We also have a footgolf course which are all the black flags on the course. If you have any confusion please call us at the pro shop so we can clarify anything for you. We want you to have the best experience possible. Thank you for supporting The First Tee of Greater Austin as well as The Harvey Penick Golf Campus. We hope to see you out here again.
Course Needs Work
Price very reasonable on GolfNow, $5/player with Cart!
Cart Trail more like ATV Trail! Sand in bunkers too soft; if you fly the ball in it sank 6" or more and you had to take unplayable! No visible yardage markers! Score card not set up for a first time player, no course layout!
Mudder F'n Course
When choosing a golf course, I didn't realize that there was an option for Cart path or No Cart path. What kind of course has mud trails 70% of the course? Maybe that's because they also have Soccer Golf on the same course. I have kids also but, when I'm playing golf I'd rather not have little kids and soccer balls on the course with me.
Soggy round
Unfortunately, it had rained hard the night before and I was asked to walk the first 9 because the course needed to dry out. I had to pull out my cheap plastic hand cart or else would have had to carry my 14 club bag on my shoulder. But it all worked out and walking helped me focus on my swings so I did better on the front than the back 9 holes. I was glad to have a cart the second 9.
Average at best
Greens were in bad condition and paths were very muddy after the rain. Course was fun and interesting otherwise.
New to golf
Been playing just at a year and have been here a few times. Just enough challenges to keep you on your toes.
POOR OLE COURSE
I remember when the First Tee Harvey Penick Course opened, and what a phenomenal track it WAS, I would play the course 2-4 times a week, the green , WERE, pure, the tee boxes, WERE, plush. Now the course is in need of work, and lots of it. I don't believe they have a course superintendent. The tee boxes are hard, have to search for a soft spot to place your tee, the fairways are like hitting off of a wooden desk, and the greens are infested with poa grass.
Very sorry to see such a gem of a course go to garbage. Seems as though they should remove the Penick name from the course, if for no other reason then, to respect Mr. Penick's name.
Would love to see the First Tee of Austin and the Harvey Penick Academy return to its glory. However that would require playing the course again to find out, and I'm not sure I would take that gamble.
Training Course
This course is what the title says it is. This is a course that you come and play to work on your short to mid range shots. There are 3 par 4's and the rest are par 3's. This is a easy walk with a bag cart and great scenery all around.
The greens are full of dollar weed and the ball jumps around like a plinko machine. So putting on these are a challenge to say the least.
They also have a kick golf course set up on the actual course for those of you that prefer a soccer ball instead of a golf ball. Looks like fun for a group or family of little kids. Look it up and have a blast out there.
Worst Greens in the World
I learned to play golf here. I'm a big supporter first tee. This course has a great practice facility and driving range. But the greens are disaster. The fairways ago tracks. This course needs to be shut down completely rebuilt. It will turn people off the golf. And to make things worse, they now allow something called foot golf in the middle of the golf course.
I learned how to play golf here. But I will never come back until it it's completely redeveloped.
Because now, it is an absolute total disaster of a golf course.
Greens were unputtable
The poa grass was so thick on each green that it was impossible to putt. Got the feeling from the young man behind the counter that this wasn't an issue.
l
This is a great course to work on your short game.
I never took the driver out of the bag. I really enjoyed the course. It allowed me to concentrate on my short game.
Be prepared to watch out for the the kick ball golfers.
It was close to 80 degrees yesterday. There was no water on the course.
Don't waste your money
This course is in horrible shape. The greens are terrible. The sand traps are mud or overgrown with weeds. I booked on golf now for. $10:00. My playing partner also booked on golf now for $5.00. We were supposed to play 18 holes. We left after 9 holes. The course is really an eight hole courses because the second hole is still closed. The city should pay the public to play this course.
Harvey would roll over in his grave!!!!!
My wife gave me this round on my birthday. After taking a class from one of Penick's students, re-reading his red book and meeting a relative of his, I looked forward to finally seeing what kind of golf facility they had deemed fit to name for him.
This could have been a nice place. When it was decided that a footgolf course should be sat down right on top of the golf course, it went downhill fast. On the three par 4's that are on the course, there are anywhere from 3 - 5 Foot golf holes on the same hole. When I got to the tee box and saw foot golfers ahead of me, it was a 20 minute wait to play the hole while they played the 4 or 5 they had to play to get off the fairway. The foot golfer's I witnessed had no regard for others or any marks they made on the green with their cleats while taking "shots".
Dont get me wrong, i think footgolf might be fun to try. But I KNOW that it shouldnt be on top of a real golf course.
My wife bought me an 18 hole round. I was so disgusted after 9 I left.
Some Course Condition Issues NOT disclosed
The course was challenging and fun but there were several greens that had very recently been aerated and heavily sanded and the 2nd hole is in the process of being redone. There was NO notice of these issues listed on golfnow or at the pro shop. This caused a less than good round.
Disappointing place to play....
After playing there a few times, I have concluded that its a huge disappointment to find that the Hole 2 wasn't preserved or fixed. To mix it up with Foot Golf isn't a good idea. The only thing Harvey Penick has that's a main reason I've enjoyed going there is the driving range and putting and chipping practice area.
We advise the footgolfers to let ALL golfers play through. I apologize your round was longer than anticipated. If you have this problem again while on the course, please call the pro shop and we will take care of it. Thank you and come back out and see us!
