No food or drinks available, lousy condition, starter rude
I have played here occasionally over the last 18 years. In June the course was in good shape, but not now in Sept. The starter, George, tried to put a guy (a smoker) in our twosome, but we declined adding a stranger to our match. So George put our twosome behind a foursome. When I questioned that, he said they "had the same tee time" and that "they won't hold you up." !?! We had to skip holes to get by them. The restaurant is closed for the season, the Lakes 9 is closed for the summer due to wetness, and the snack bar closed because the lessee didn't pay his rent. So there's no place for a post-round beer. The place has gone way downhill. It's cheap. You get what you pay for. Hepatitis A scare here this summer.
Pass
Pace of play was great because no one was on the course. Not even taking into account the water due to rain, the course is in poor conditions. Weeds everywhere. Parts of the fairway that are in total disrepair. Tee boxes were nasty and rough. Greens were actually pretty good besides a few holes. It looks like even if it wasn’t for all the rain maybe this place isn’t kept up very well. Course design was confusing intertwining inside itself multiple 9 hole layouts. I’m surprised we didn’t get lost. Zero food available on site. It’s fun golfing 4-5 hours in hot sun early in morning and can’t get s hot dog or even a bag of chips. No cart person even on a Sunday. Just overall nothing that has me wanting to come back, especially with much better options for around the same price within minutes of this course.
Great Drainage, Great Greens and Fairways
With all the rain South Shore in Hillsborough County FL has received in the recent past, Sandpiper is doing a fantastic job handling the water dropped. The fairway are in great condition though wet is some spots, but nothing major. The greens are the best I have seen. Some holes were best used by cart path only, otherwise 90 degree worked very well. Finished my round of 18 holes in 2.25 hours.
If the summer rains continue, this will probably be one of my go to courses.
Great Course
The pace was amazing. I don’t know if no one was in town or what but I’d definitely play here again. You have to use driver every hole. Only 2 par 3s each 9 holes. The course is really forgiving though because it’s open. Only the Lakes 9 holes might lose a threat.
Expected more
I think recent reviewers may have been a little generous. I liked the layout of the course. The homes were not too close. The holes were interesting. The fairways are fairly open. The course has a lot of traps making it interesting (some quite difficult). The greens on the lake course are tiny and that makes it more challenging. The greens are in good shape. All that is good. However, I think the fairways and tee boxes are in poor condition at best and off-the-fairway areas are really bad. Some of the tee boxes had no live grass at the back tees. They need to do a lot of watering. The staff was extremely friendly and courteous. I would recommend the course, but just be willing to move your ball to find a patch of grass if you are off the fairway (and maybe even if you are on it). There were few players there when I went so don’t worry about time issues.
Fun Course
I enjoy this course but I will say that these greens are the smallest I have ever played.
Enjoyable round
Got out early. Fast pace of play. Greens in great condition. Layout is fair but challenging with bunkers and water.
Nice!
Great value for the price. Three nines, cannot wait to play the other one. Highly recommend!
Good greens, bad bunkers.
Cool little layout. We played the Palms 9, then the Oaks. Palms had much larger greens and more straight forward layout. The oaks course is actually a lot of fun with it’s winding fairways and very small greens. My buddy is from Monterey California and he said a lot of these greens were about the size of those found at Pebble Beach. All of the greens were rolling pretty well, but the areas around the greens and the bunkers all over the course (especially fairway bunkers) were not in good shape. This made chipping and pitching extremely challenging. The little bar/ restaurant on site is fun, and the bartender was really friendly.
Bang for the Buck
Difficult at this time of year to find a decent course at a reasonable price but Sandpiper fit the bill. Would play there again for the same price.
Tough enough
My friend and I played Lakes and Palms. Both courses were in great shape. Greens were in great shape and consistent. The greens are small which makes accuracy critical. The lakes has several holes where good shots are required to score well. Hole 2 requires an accurate tee shot to avoid a large ravine. Hole 3 is risk reward on tee shot. Too much and your ball could roll into lake. The par 3s on Palms are long 150+ from senior tees. Playing Sandpiper was a lot of fun.
A good choice with extra help for high handicaper
The course is in reasonably good shape. Wide fairways and mostly filled divots. The greens are very large with few ball marks. The green speed was slow-moderate to moderate. There are 5 sets of tees including a lavender for way, way up front help for very high handicaps. My wife loved that part. Everyone working at the course was very helpful and of good humor.
This is a very nice course a good value for the money I’m nice laying out conditions are very nice the greens are well-kept I enjoy playing that I would recommend this course
Nice course
Pace of play was great. Greens better than most pay to play courses.
Overall a good experience playing the Sandpiper course.
Nice day
A 10am tee time helped, but the 3 nines spread out golfers so we went thru in under 3.5 hours. Tee boxes and greens in good shape, houses far off the fairways, water on few holes. A nice, relaxing round of golf.
Good value
Pace of play good Condition good greens nice. Played from. Blue tees and found it a fun course Would definitely play again
