About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business.
The Hooch Golf Club sits along the Chattahoochee River in Duluth, sprawling across a scenic landscape covered with ponds and lakes. The course is an executive, par-61 layout that combines traditional features with modern challenges. Although there aren't any par 5s on the golf course there are a few holes that stretch to over 400 yards, which guarantees that you'll be using all the clubs in your bag. There is plenty of water throughout the golf course, including three holes that play right along the river. It might not be what you're looking for if you want something truly formidable, but for a short course it's a good challenge that provides excellent iron practice. Besides the golf course, The Hooch is also known for its 12-acre, lighted driving range. There are also putting and chipping greens with a deep-faced practice bunker.

Good Course but, greens need work. The greens were a little rough.
Sloooooowwww.
There is no other place that better proves the saying "you get what you pay for." For $32 on a Saturday morning, you cannot expect great course conditions or pace of play.
The three elderly ladies who teed off 30 minutes before us were still chopping their balls 3 yards at a time on the 2nd hole when we got done with #1. Even the hacker father-and-son pair who went off in front of us had played through the Witches of Hoochwick already.
The first green had several huge bare patches. The 2nd green got our hopes up because it was near-perfect, but then the 3rd was bad again, and so on. The fairway grass was long. Tee boxes were so-so.
We called the clubhouse when we were on #4 to tell them about the coven of hackers who were holding up play and driving on the par 3 fairways. The marshall came out two holes later and then it got slightly better. The irony is that the Witches of Hoochwick had played through a trio of even slower players. We were stuck behind them until 9 when we finally found an opportunity to skip a hole past those guys.
I know that this course attracts beginners and that you have to expect slow play, but the management isn't really making a big effort to improve the situation. Those beginners should be educated to pick up their balls and move along when they are holding up play or to invite people behind them to play through.
For $22 more, I can play River Pines where the course is in great shape and the average pace of play is around 4:20. Those guys do a great job of keeping players moving along and it is a much more enjoyable experience.
Average Conditions at The Hooch
I found The Hooch to be quite easy in comparison to my regular courses. It is a great way to work on your distance control and ball striking, however, the greens were in terrible shape: heavily pitted with ball marks and large portions of the green missing due to disease (to my untrained eye). The pace of play was pretty slow for me due to the two-some in front of us. Apparently, one golfer was teaching his buddy how to play, however, he left off the lessons in pace of play and etiquette. Pace of Play: They would take 5 to 10 minutes to redo shots as well as to go back and forth around the green trying different shots. Etiquette: Twice I couldn't find my ball after great drives on par 4s. The second time I had the thought to go check my ball. After not being able to find it I questioned the two-some. The student had picked it up and pocketed it. Good thing I always mark my ball.
Going Down Hill
I used to enjoy this course for a quick round. Forget about quick! The last several times I have played the pace of play has been brutal. This course attracts too many people who don't know or don't care about golf course etiquette or ready now golf.
The greens are in terrible shape. Many burned out spots and NO ONE repairs divots. I repaired 3 on one whole on my putt line. Even if the patrons have no respect for the green, the superintendent isn't bothering to keep them healthy.
We played 2 days after a storm and they still hadn't cleaned the leaves off the 16th fairway. Ball down the middle of the fairway and you can't find your ball.
Forget about this place. It is going down hill fast!!!
Good for short game practice
The facility has a nice driving range, practice bunker, chipping green and practice putting area.
However, the last time I played the course many of the greens were in particularly bad shape.
ok for golf now hot deal
$19 for 18 with cart made it worth it. Conditions are ok due to lack of rain. We got paired up with 2 very nice people which is to be expected. Only one Marshall at tee.
So this Korean gentleman hit into me by 5 feet off first tee! The Marshall saw this and did nothing. Then he skipped ahead of us onto 3rd tee without a word. I called him out. He put 3 into the woods, drives over the tee box and takes off. He realized it was busy in front of us as well. So as my husband is about to tee off he cones careening back toward us and back to 2. So I call the clubhouse. The Marshall tells him to be careful. Thanks. So then he hits into us again! He lands 2 balls this time into our tee box on 5. Finally at the turn he drives ahead to 10. The Marshall said nothing he can do. Note to self. It's basically a day place for cheap.
Good course, but very small
The course overall is good, but no par 5's which I didn't like. Not that impressed with anything about the course, just very average. If you're looking to goof off, play here, but if you're serious, I'd play somewhere else.
Great Confident Booster course
Lots of par 3's good layout. Will Play this course often to maintain my short game
Hooch Golf course
I think course is good. This is my first time here and it took me about 3.5 hours to complete 18 holes.
very nice par 61 course
Found course in very good shape. Be careful on tee shot of #3, you must keep it away of trees on right!
Good Par 3 practice
Scoring for a mid handicapper is done on Par 3 s and Par 5s..... Great course for your mid to short game....
Terrible
The so called starter guy was really rude and disrespectful and the course was in horrible shape. Would not recommend!
good for relaxing round
Plenty of challenges but Plenty of easy holes as well.
It is what it is
Shot under par. Must throw darts since the greens will not roll true. It is what it is. All par 4s are drivable so if it's teed up you can still score.
The worst course
The worst course i ever have played
Course is not maintained. Cart path is broken everywhere. Staff is not friendly
Good Golf for the money...
Inexpensive play. Had a great time with friends. Good spacing between groups. No rush.
rough greens
Greens had recently been punched and lots of sand. putting conditions fair to poor. Areation Alert and discount should have been on golf now, none was. Would have gone elsewhere this particular day.
I do typically like the Hooch though especially when I get a deal on the fee.
