Great experience
I was just passing through town and found this place in short notice. I had a great experience and would highly recommend. Course was in great shape and I had a lot of fun
Nice course
Fairways and roughs in good condition. Sand traps were raked but not fluffy. Gteens held the approach shot, were medium speed, rolled true.
I really enjoyed the golf course. The greens need a little work but we think probably had trouble w the storm. Hopefully the greens will be better the next time we play. We will be back for sure. Worth the 1 hour drive to play.
Challenging Course
Fairways and roughs in good shape. Greens held the approach shot very well, lots of non-repaired ball marks from previous players, rolled true, were medium/fast speed. Sand traps were well raked but not very deep sand (they need to be deep raked!). Overall experience very pleasant.
Great layout
I enjoyed the layout and pace of play.
Conditions were all good. The greens were a little damaged in spots but hold, roll good, and are fast.
All workers inside and out were great. The price very reasonable. Will play again and recommend to others.
Good round
Greens are a little messy on a couple holes but fairways and overall in really good shape.
Good Public Golf
Deer Broom is good public golf at a decent value. The price has risen over the years but that could be said for golf in general. The layout is a tough challenge for the average golfer. The fairways are generous enough. But there are several forced carries, elevation changes and putting and chipping around the greens is rather tricky. The course is also pretty long from the white tees coming in at over 6400 yards. The course was in good shape. Several greens were showing the wear and tear of a hot summer. The bent grass had several bare spots that should improve with cooler weather. But the fairways and tee boxes were nearly perfect. It’s well worth a play and a decent value.
Good local challenge
Deer Brook is a great local course. It is a championship style layout, especially from the back at a good price and a very good value. The course is in good shape. Greens firm and true. Fairways and tees good for this time of year. The rough had a lot of poa annua in it right now. And due to heavy rains yesterday and last night, the bunkers were unplayable. The course was pretty wet. Cart path only. And so the pace which is pretty slow on weekends anyway was especially slow. Over 4 and a half hours for our group. But. The layout is outstanding. Very fair and tough from the white tees for an average golfer. Well worth the money you pay to play for this course.
Great Find
Neat course in the middle of Cleveland County. Nice layout, along with the condition. A few tricky holes with blind shots. Yet very playable.
Nice place !
Finally played Deer Brook in Shelby and came away very impressed. This course has some beautiful stretches of holes on both the front and back 9's. I love courses that have elevated tees or greens where you can see 3 or 4 holes from one vantage point. Deer Brook has several spots like this on both nines, notably #1 green, #3 tee / #6 green, #11 green, #12 green, and #14 green / #17 fairway. I also like courses that finish right in front of the clubhouse so your buddies in other groups can watch you play 18. This course is reasonably priced and has a nice big clubhouse with a restaurant and covered outdoor patio bar. The layout feels wide open off the tee. The greens can be difficult due to tiers and slopes, especially if the Bentgrass is rolling quick. All in all, this is a scenic, very challenging course
Still one of the best values around
Got out to Deer Brook for the first time in a while this afternoon. This is one of the best values in golf. The course is in great shape, and I paid $30 for an afternoon weekday round. I have paid double that or more for much less quality. Its worth at least an hour drive. The greens, tees, and fairways are in great shape. I did think the greens were a little slow, but looked and rolled great. The course is also pretty long from the white tees.
1 is a medium length straight away par 4 that is downhill to the green. Hit it too good and you will have a sharp downhill lie
2 is a longer par 5 that moves right between two fairway bunkers. The green is extremely shallow.
3 is a medium length par 3, steep downhill.
4 is a longer uphill par 4. You need to be in the right side of the fairway to avoid the tree on the left with your approach. The green slopes hard back to front.
5 is the mirror image of 4 but back downhill and the green slopes front to back.
6 is a medium length downhill par 3. DONT GO LONG! The green is impossible if you are over the pin. Better to chip up than putt down.
7 is a medium length par 4 that moves left. Drive must clear a ravine.
8 is a longer par 5 that gets tighter the further you go. Green is narrow and slops hard back to front.
9 is a medium length par 4. Tough green. If the pin is in the right shelf its impossible.
10 is a long uphill par 5. The tee shot is tight, but way more room than it looks for you 2nd shot, it really opens up to the right.
11 is a longer downhill par 4. Everything slopes left, and there is a huge bowl in the green.
12 is a medium length par 3 over a creek
13 is a long par 4 with a downhill tee shot and an uphill approach.
14 is a long par 3 over the pond. Green slopes hard front to back.
15 is a shorter par 4 that bends right. Weird angle off the tee to the fairway.
16 is a long downhill par 4. DONT GO RIGHT. You will be blocked. Also must clear a dry creek bed on approach.
17 is a long par 5. You hit two good shots straight then must cross a pond at almost a 90 degree angle right to a shallow green. Tough par 5.
18 is a brute of a finishing hole. Long par 4. Must hit a good tee ball to have a chance. Second shot is over a pond to a large green that slopes hard back to front.
All in all, you wont find a better golf value than this unless you win a free round somewhere.
Best around
Deer Brook is the best local course around. It is in great shape from tee to green. And you won’t find a better conditioned course for the price. $35 on a Friday morning. I’ve paid a lot more for a lot worse courses. It’s worth up to an hour drive for the conditions and the price.
Sandy Greens
Deerbrook is a great and challenging layout. Longer than most courses from the regular tees and you will have several forced carries, doglegs, etc.. 17 and 18 are tough finishing holes. The greens had just been verticut and sanded which made them bumpy while putting, but they knocked a few bucks off the regular price because of it. This course is a great value in what you pay for and what you get. I think the layout is great, and in a week or so the sand will be gone and the greens will be in great shape.
Still a great course
This was really my first time getting out to Deer Brook this summer. And for the most part the course is in terrific shape. The tees and fairways were near flawless. The rough was cut and not too penal unless you get WAY off course. The greens were slower than I've ever seen them. It looks like they were punched a couple weeks ago and still aren't quiet back to 100 percent. Idk if it's that or if they aren't cutting them as low to protect the bent grass from the heat. But they usually aren't that slow here. But they still rolled pretty good. The course is a pretty stern challenge. There is plenty of room out there. But if you miss in the wrong spots it's tough to salvage a par or bogey. The course probably has the 2 hardest finishing holes around with 17 and 18. I played on a Wednesday afternoon and finished 18 holes in less than 3 hours and it's less than $30 to play. You can't beat it.
Hot, Hot, Hot
Had a great day with the boys, EXTREMELY hot day, it made for some hot scores. Getting my swing back and love playing Deer Brook.
