Great place to play
Super course. One of the most unique and challenging courses in the area.
Great course
The course as always was well maintained. Not a course for anyone looking for their best score as it is a very tough but fair test of golf. The course is always beautiful but even more so in the fall.
Beautiful Course/Unbelievable Cost
Beautiful fall day. The only problem with the course was a few greens that had some weed growth that needs to be removed. The three of us that played, lost a number of balls in leaves, but to be honest, they weren't in the fairways.
I can't wait to play Tot Hill again.
Lots of Character
Many folks really dislike this course and the layout. Not sure why. Perhaps it's because it's not flat and has no holes that run beside each other. It's not wide open and you can't roll or bounce shots into the greens.
It requires accuracy in each phase of the game. All greens require carry to get on them. And if you are wild off the tee, lots of trouble. It's a ball strikers course, no doubt.
If you are older or a higher handicapper, this probably is not the place for you. You will not like it.
But ball strikers will LOVE this place!
Needs Help!
This course you can tell was at one time a awesome course, but the front 9 need a lot of work!! They have stopped cutting the grass and weeds around the rocks so it's over grown can't really see the real majestic views , also greens hadn't been mowed and not in great shape! Now 10 thru 15 are what this course is all about the rocks the the views then 16 thru 18 back to needing some work grass clipping all over the place in clumps!! Also lock up and ready to, leave at 5:30! And then had come 500 miles might want a souvenir to remember not a hat in the place with there logo on it!! Save your money and play Tabacco Road!
Great layout
As an avid golfer I look at course conditions the layout is one of a kind must play the greens were arrified looks like a couple of weeks ago so the greens were bumpy and slow but a great course I will definitely return when the greens heal bring some balls trouble lurks everywhere
Greens Are Poor
I've played THF several times over the last few years though it has been several months since my last trip. The course is still an excellent, challenging layout with a friendly staff. Unfortunately, the other recent reviews about poor green conditions are true. Several had numerous bald patches. The course had recently aerated the greens which hopefully will get them back into their usual fine condition with time. Fairways and tee boxes remain in good shape.
Tot Hill is classic Mike Strantz
Mike Strantz designed visually challenging golf courses and Tot Hill Farm is no exception. There are significant elevation changes to confound club selection, false fronts on greens that repel shots to front pin positions, and rocky hazards that are not for the faint of heart. There are also generous landing areas and reasonable positions to lay up for chances at saving par. It is an excellent layout that challenges all aspects of your game. Having played in late August, the course does show the effects of the heat to some degree. The greens were not perfect but quite playable. The staff is very friendly/helpful/accommodating. The clubhouse is rather spare, and the selection of food and drink is limited. While its location is a bit out-of -the-way, Tot Hill Farm is a must play for serious golfers.
Condition?
I have always thought that this course is one of the best and most challenging that I have ever played. It is still a great challenge but the course conditions have deteriorated in the past two months. I understand that Integrity Golf has taken over the management of the facility and they seem to be really cutting corners that are very noticeable to patrons. The tee boxes are in awful condition alone with numerous green collars and approaches.
I realize that we have had hot and rainy weather but other courses aren't suffering as bad. I love this course and it is a disservice to allow the deteriorating conditions.
On a positive note, the staff was very friendly and engaging.
Let's all hope that this is just a temporary situation as it would be a shame if this course becomes like most munis as far as conditioning.
Great views
Very beautiful golf course with tons of elevation changes. Elevated tee boxes, elevated greens, can be very tricky to pick the right club so bring your A game. There were a few holes that can trip you up if you are a first timer on the course. Greens were a little soft and beat up, but that's not surprising considering recent weather. Overall very enjoyable round and looking forward to playing again.
To much hype
This course could have been great. It is to tricked up. Blind shots, poor tee box choices and horrendous pace of play. 5 1/2 hour round. Never saw a ranger in all that time. Too many players playing from the wrong tees. The greens were slow, soft and showing even spike less marks everywhere. Every iron shot into the green left a ball size 2" pitch mark in the green. This helps to explain the poor condition of the greens.
A must for golfers needing a think-your-way-around course
It rained off and on, conditions a bit soggy, and the greens a bit chewed up. But you had to consider where you wanted your shot to go, and the consequences of a miss. My partner and I often looked back to decide shot placement for a future round. And I look forward to that time.
WOW
Wow what a course. After playing both Tot Hill Farm and Tobacco Road I have found that Tot Hill Farm is by far superior to Tobacco road. This course totally blows Tobacco Road off the map. I believe this has to best Stranzs masterpiece. If you have a choice between tot hill and tobacco rd then without a hesitation pick Tot HIll you will not be sorry. If I had one last course to play this is it.
Mixed feelings
August 2016. Someone needs to mow the grass! Crabgrass was so high, I couldn't see some of the numbers on the rock yardage markers as you drive up to the tee box. Lots of crabgrass around edges of tee boxes, greens, etc. Fairways in good shape. Greens were awful. Layout is interesting. Up and down. Got to hit it straight or you're in trouble. Difficult for older players to reach tee boxes and greens on some holes.
The starter, Keith, was great. Got a $19 hot deal on golfnow.com but was charged $25 for my wife to ride along as a spectator. If I had known the cost, I would've included her as a player on Golfnow. Pretty tacky of pro shop guy. First time I've been charged a rider fee in years, especially on a Monday when there are 5 cars in the parking lot. Stopped at Tot Hill on the way to Pinehurst. Next time I won't stop. Better courses in Pinehurst area with better deals.
Love this course
I always enjoy Tot Hill. The scenery is awesome and it's a great challenge. Especially like it in the fall when seasons are changing. Staff is courtious and friendly. Thanks
Wonderful
This course is a true masterpiece. I have played golf for 45 years and have never seen a course that was built to keep the natural layout of the land intact as well as this course does. It is difficult, make sure you play the tees that are fit your level of play. The course was not in perfect shape, several greens had a few issues, but the heat index was 105 and many of the courses I have played recently had the same issues. This course is worth the drive from anywhere (I drove 4 hours). It is a work of art. Play and enjoy the challenge.
First Strantz Course I Played
A short hour and twenty minute drive from the triangle is well worth it to play Tot Hill. I arrived for my 8:20 Tee time around 7:30 and entered the pro shop where I was greeted with a smile. Asked if I have played the course before, and when I said no, I was given a few tips and was sure to be handed one of their new style score cards with a little more detail on hole layouts on the card. For someone who is still struggling to break that ever elusive 90, I was expecting a very challenging day and be sure of a score much in the 100s for me(finished up 96, and I had plenty of looks to make that better, minus the 7 drops I had to take and my first time out I am truly very pleased with that!). I did play with a friend who has played here a handful of times(bit of a secret weapon , and is greatly needed) who was able to give me the lay-of-the land on a few places to hit or not hit.
The course was in great shape for this time of year in the south and the 95 degree hot sun filled days we have had over the last couple of weeks. Sure, there was a few blemishes here and there but overall the fairways were flush and the greens were rolling true( a little slow for what I was expecting , but it was early in the day and the greens-keepers were out in full force making sure that they were well watered and cool to not burn out in the coming heat of the day.
I will be back again to take some vengeance on the Par 5's that just ate me up , and to see the look on a playing partners face when they walk up to see their 'great' shot that landed on the green hit a hump or a false front and rolled away to a 50+ foot putt or yet a another chip up to the green !
Oh, and before I forget the Sub $40 rate w/cart and $5 bag of range balls , is just an absolute STEAL for the course conditions. I personally was not a fan of the range that is elevated and everything you hit is down hill really throwing off your perception of where your shot is landing. The range area was very flush and well-kept however so it was a pleasure to hit from, just pay more attention to ball trajectory and overall line then using it to fully judge your distance in relation to target.
The Best
this is so far my favorite course to play..its not only fun and challenging but also visually stunning also.you will not be disappointed playing this course.
Like No Other!
This course would command a high price if not located in this out of the way location. This is a very unique course that is a blast to play if you play from correct tees for your game. The greens are undulating and require attention on approach shots. Make this trip and stop by nearby historic Lexington BBQ for a meal. You will never forget it.
One of the all time great golf courses!
Tot Hill Farm golf club is truly a special place. Mike Strantz is one of the all time great golf course designers and this is masterpiece of his. This course brings upon all kinds of emotions and is a roller coaster ride through the foothills in the asheboro countryside. If you love golf and love nature and seek enlightenment, Tot Hill is a must play golf course. It is worth the trip if you live in the triangle. It is a beautiful drive out to asheboro.
