$100? Really?

This course is set up for shorter hitters who enjoy well-placed shots. Sand everywhere. But don’t get me wrong. While it sucked we had cart path only, there’s nothing wrong with the course itself. It’s just not what I prefer. The part that was ridiculous was the price for what you get. For $99 on a weekend, I did not expect gas carts from the 90’s and almost no food/beverage options on a Sunday morning. It’s not a bad course. It’s just not very fun. And when you get little other benefit of any kind, $99 is way too much to pay.

The course was great. Challenging, scenic, greens in great shape. But to tee off at 8:40am, with the course starting off of 1 and 10 simultaneously, and being backed up all day waiting on EVERY SINGLE TEE BOX as a 4-some makes the golf much less enjoyable.

Carolina Lakes review

Just relocated from Scottsdale so a bit spoiled when it comes to course conditions. However, this is a beautifully challenging layout which boasts a ton of slopes in fairways, elevated and lowered greens so the challenge is definitely there.

Dormant this time of year (no overseed) so it is very brown at this time. They just aerated greens so a bit bumpy but all in all some very tough green complexes and putt pretty well despite the recent punching.

It's a little spendy compared to other clubs in the area . It is also inside a Del Webb community so you have some play that tends to be on the slower side.

Most recently due to the punching of greens they reduced the green fee for just a window of time around 65.00 currently.

Overall a nice experience. The tees you play are essential for club selection as you will into holes that carrying the ball too far can get you in trouble.

Beautiful course

Recent rains forced cart path only for the entire course which I think was excessive. There were some areas that made sense to keep the carts off, but not the entire course. This slowed play significantly. We got stuck behind a threesome that lined up every put like it was the Masters which didn’t help. They eventually let us (twosome) play through so we were able to complete the round before it got dark. Overall, it is a beautiful course with plenty of challenges and in good shape for February. The greens were in good shape and a bit quick. I do plan to play it again in the spring to see what it’s like in better conditions.

Where is the money spent?

While it’s been quite a while since I’ve played due to the terrible course conditions and the courses desire to cram tee times by sending tee times out on from and back nine, which always resulted in 5+ hour rounds, I was pleasantly surprised that the course was a little better and at least I didn’t notice the front/back nine simultaneous tee times.

Now for the real details.

- the greens are still not even close to being worth an $89 green fee.

- there are so many ball marks on every green, I can help but wonder what the greens keepers do. I tried to fix as many ball marks on every hole as time allowed, but not even remedying a fraction.

- watching puts bounce around on the way to the hole is quite frustrating!

- Range balls are the worst! Nothing but junk balls they appear to have purchased in eBay or worse.

- carts are old, no gps.

- So, this leads me back to the title of my review, as I have no idea what they spend all the money they collect on, but clearly not on the course.

There’s a good reason I took Carolina Lakes off my weekly golf rotation, and you guessed it, back off the list. I can play WAY better courses for the same or less!

Local rumors are true

Greens in bad shape, and no one rakes bunkers or fills divots. The senior community association and members run a muck and are not held accountable. Slow pace of play middle of the week.

Improved

The course is in good shape for the winter. Lots of bunkers. Greens can be tricky but rolled fair.

No joke

This course deserves 4.5 stars and would receive 5 stars if it wasn’t winter conditions. The course is tough and the layout is great and the greens are fast. In my opinion this is the best public course in the Charlotte Area.. Can’t wait to play it in it’s green glory….

So slow

5 hours and 20 minute round, makes me want to quit the game I love. I blame ignorant, rude golfers so if you read this and are butt hurt please try bowling instead of golf. Four hour max is reasonable i dont care if you shoot 100 or 70 just keep it moving. Wish courses did a better job of policing it but never going to happen, keep telling us cart path only on par 3's and the pin locations at the start of the round and hope everything works out.
