Osprey/Heron at Okeeheelee Golf Course
About
With a name meaning 'quiet waters' in the Seminole language, Okeeheelee Golf Course is situated amidst lush, rolling hills that overlook the sparkling waters of Clear Lake. There are 27 championship holes that are divided into three nines and can be played in three different 18-hole combinations. The Osprey, Heron, and Eagle nines are named after the various wildlife that can be seen throughout. Each golf course offers a different set of challenges and scenery. Okeeheelee's Osprey/Heron Course features a variety of elevation changes. There are scenic views from the elevated greens but don't become too distracted since there are many elements to contend with including towering trees, strategically placed bunkers, and deep rough lining the fairways. There are also plenty of water hazards coming into play.

Interesting course design, plenty of options.
Our foursome played Okeeheelee Golf Course yesterday. The Herron 9 was in good shape. We played summer rules and had very few bad lies in the fairways. The greens were receptive and neither very fast or slow. They ran very true. Sand traps had good white sand and werr very playable. The layout was fun with several doglegs, elevation changes and good variety of lengths of holes. There are some hidden dangers, but that is to be expected on a first trip around the course.
Our second 9 was played on the Eagle Course. It also had good fairways, several doglegs, interesting greens complexes and good sand. The greens were top-dressed, hard as rock and difficult to hold, even with towering wedges and tour balls. Some of the greens are huge and could provide some long, long putts if the greens keeper is in a diabolical mood. They rolled faster than the Herron Course, but it will be interesting to play the Eagle after the greens return to normal.
And we will be back soon. All in all it was good golf, good fun and good value. Be warned: the starters were neither friendly or helpful to people they did not know. The group in front of us did not all check in together at the starters booth and they were soundly scolded for not knowing what was expected of them! Bring your own drinking vessels. There is plenty of drinking water on the course but no large cups, lids or straws, and, also, the dining room was not open.
No beverages. Bring your own cups for water.
When booking our round, we weren't aware the snack bar is closed. Could not purchase beer. You also have to bring your own cup if you want water, which we also were not aware of. The starter was very rude while explaining this. There were limited snacks and drinks in the pro shop. We played Heron, and Eagle. The greens on each side were totally different. The greens on the first nine were much slower than the second nine, which made it hard to get used to. Also rock hard on the second nine, and difficult to hold the green. Pace of play was reasonable at around 4.5 hours. Was not impressed by the condition of the course for the price.
won't be back
My wife and I played there and was disappointed. There is no consistency when it comes to the Covid rules. There were rakes for the bunkers.. Great! There were ball washers at the tees. Great! But, no snack cart, nor water to drink on the course. The snack shop was closed and when my wife ran in on the turn to get some water she had to go into the pro shop. After waiting for other golfers to pay for their tee times she was then told that it was credit card only. Seems like the manager has his head screwed on incorrectly. So nervous about Covid
Greens of the Eagle course ok, but the greens on the Osprey course were very furry and weedy.
Naaa..... we won't be back.
2nd Time at Okeeheelee
This my second time playing Okeeheelee. I have not played all three nines. Each of them are different in layout and difficulty. Osprey is my favorite.
Once the greens become less concrete like, I will enjoy it more. Right now it's hard to keep an approach shot on most greens.
Okeeheelee is Just OK
Dazzling course designs on Heron and Osprey tracks, which featured gently rolling hills and numerous water hazards, was offset by dreadfully slow pace of play, thanks to an assortment of Sunday afternoon players in dire need of range work. The fairways, bunkers and tees were in good shape on both courses, but the greens on Heron were slow, while the greens on Osprey looked as if they had recently undergone sand conditioning. There was no snack bar or beverage cart service. The staff and cart attendants were courteous, while the harried starter desperately tried to accommodate players who wanted to play as a duo or a trio on an afternoon that required foursomes only. Still, this better-than-average, county-owned track will be worth a second visit from Fort Lauderdale, this time on a weekday - and once a snack bar and beverage cart service is reinstated.
1st Time at Okeeheelee
Great time on a fun course. Lots of water along the edges of the fairways highens your need to concentrate on your shots.
Will try the course again real soon.
Great place
Very good condition. The green are really smooth and roll true. Unfortunately it was super windy today so it was Uber challenging from the gold tees. Highly recommended.
Thank you for spending the day with us and for leaving a review. Give us a call before your next round and we will get the wind turned down for you! See you soon.
