The hills
I love this course, it gives you a bit of a challenge because its located in the Berkeley hills which gives a look at uphill and downhill holes. My past visit the course was in great conditions, I played after 12 and the greens were nice and firm like putting on marble. Overall a Great experience!
Excellent conditions
The course was in good conditions and the weather couldn't have been better.
Overall nice course
Course was in great shape, but play was very slow. We were the first group behind a private tournament of ~100 guys which is probably why, but the round was nearly 6 hours! (normally I would quit early and/or complain but the weather was perfect and I was playing well, so I chose to ride it out). I also only paid $36 w/cart. I'm not sure I'd be back at full price, but under $40 is a good deal for this course.
Fun course to play
Condition of course is very good. Pace of play is slow due to challenging holes and little room for error.
Tilden 4/8/14
Course was in great shape. Aeration two weeks prior but only two or three greens showed bumps. Rain the prior week made course and surrounding hills look great. Some of the rough was pretty long and workers were in the process of cutting.
My wife sent me off for the day to play this great course
What a wonderful course to play, even though , I played this many times, it is still in as good of condition as it was years ago. It is always a challenge and extremely interesting. I am a low-handicapper and love this course
course conditions
pace of play was great for Sunday (under 4 hours)
I questioned the $65 rate as the greens had just been punched and the putting was bumpy fairways were in great shpae
Why did Golfnow not tell me that the greens were recently aerated?
The course was nice but I would not have travelled 58 miles (one way) to play here if I had been told that the greens were aerated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why was that not mentioned when I booked my tee time?
Golf in a mountain park
Tilden Park offers a fabulous "mountain park" setting. There are tall evergreens everywhere, several elevation changes and I believe the only housing structures in ever sight are the pro shop and clubhouse. The course is surprisingly difficult due to side-hill lies, small sloping greens, and long par threes. Due to it's elevation changes Tilden gives walkers a real workout but it is worth it because it is in such a beautiful setting.
The layout is rather rather tight so if you are a high handicapper expect to lose a couple sleeves of balls. That is one reason this course is known for slow play. However, even though I was paired with a foursome (now a five-some) we played in 4 hours and 35 minutes which is reasonable.
I highly recommend this walk-in-a-park. Just don't expect to lower your handicap.
Fun course, painfully slow pace
The course and the setting are great. Only a few miles from the city, but you feel like you're golfing in the Tahoe area. Fun elevated tee boxes and the greens were in good shape. The only draw back is the pace of play. It's painfully slow. We got in 14 holes in 5 hours on a Sunday. There are lots of elevation changes and spread out holes, so walking during weekends should not be allowed.
Beautiful course
Our late start due to lack of carts and a full tee box was frustrating. Running out of carts at 10:00 AM? I love the setting and the beauty of this course. This course will also challenge every golfer. Shots need to be accurate. The soggy conditions did not allow for carts to leave the cart paths and the shots were stopped dead where they landed. sometimes getting buried is very soft soil. Greens with difficult pin placements were challenging. Moisture and speed was different for most greens. Tee boxes were very muddy with a few without grass. Overall...Long difficult round in a beautiful setting.
Fell in Love all over again
I hadn't been to Tilden in 4-5 years. I am questioning myself now as to why.
The course was in excellent shape. Greens were readable and medium soft. Had a few birdie opportunities, and made some great recovery shots!
Tee boxes were trim, fairways were lush with no brown spots. I could smell the trees and there was just a slight breeze wafting through the branches. Played at about 67 degrees and it was perfect. Am definitely coming back soon. Pro shop desk was extremely friendly, both before and after the round. It was a truly outstanding experience in all phases.
Worst Managed Golf Course in the Area.
This has got to be the worst managed golf course in the Bay Area. It seems that this course has no problems letting a group every 2 minutes try to tee off. Raise the prices i.e. stop giving UC Berkeley discounts and manage the course better! This could be a great course if management would actually manage the facility.
81 yr. old Lady Golfer Likes Course
There was NO sign of a marshall to speed up the group ahead of us who were up to 2 holes behind by the time we got to the back 9.
Greens were fine, but within 100 yds. of most greens the lack of grass in some areas resulted in unfair , unacceptable lies. Balls rolling back off the greens (as on # 4, 5, 12 + 15) slowed play unnecessarily.
decent course
great course for those who want to be challenged. many hills and valleys.
Hilly valley course - NO FLAT LIES
I just can't bring myself to like this course. I want to like it, but I can never put together a good round here.
The course is set among the redwoods in Berkeley and is usually foggy and damp (though the day we played the weather was gorgeous and probably the best thing about the round). The layout meanders through the valley and has many elevation changes. Do not expect to have many flat lies. The majority of fairways are sloped and even a tee shot down the middle can end up in the rough or trees. Placement off the tee is very important as the greens are surrounded by trees and hazard. There are not many places to miss on approach shots. The greens look faster than they are, and break less than they appear.
I would recommend this course to anyone who likes valley courses/target golf. The course conditions aren't fantastic but the layout will challenge you. The course is just not for me.
Great layout
This was my first round at Tilden park. The course has a nice layout with challenging elevation changes. The course has a mix of tight and wide open fairways. I would definitely play this course again.
Worth playing a couple times
Course is extremely hilly with serious elevation changes. Don't expect to post a good score on your first trip around. Course knowledge would be a benefit. Course not in great shape and the greens were really bumpy making it difficult to make putts. All that being said I would play it again. Great scenery with challenging shot selection and fun driving holes. Good value, I made a tee time on a Saturday evening and got a great tee time for Sunday morning for $60.00/player. In the Bay Area that's not bad.
gem in the hills
One of the prettiest courses in the Bay Area, with jaw-dropping views around every turn. Dramatic elevation changes on most holes. Course is well kept and landscaped to provide the occasional favorable bounce. Greens are contoured and require some strategy. If you can get past the 400 yard straight uphill first hole with a 5, you'll have a great day. My only complaint was pace of play. We went off 45 minutes late on a 1:55 tee time, and had to give up after 16 holes due to darkness.
