Hilly valley course - NO FLAT LIES
I just can't bring myself to like this course. I want to like it, but I can never put together a good round here.
The course is set among the redwoods in Berkeley and is usually foggy and damp (though the day we played the weather was gorgeous and probably the best thing about the round). The layout meanders through the valley and has many elevation changes. Do not expect to have many flat lies. The majority of fairways are sloped and even a tee shot down the middle can end up in the rough or trees. Placement off the tee is very important as the greens are surrounded by trees and hazard. There are not many places to miss on approach shots. The greens look faster than they are, and break less than they appear.
I would recommend this course to anyone who likes valley courses/target golf. The course conditions aren't fantastic but the layout will challenge you. The course is just not for me.
Great layout
This was my first round at Tilden park. The course has a nice layout with challenging elevation changes. The course has a mix of tight and wide open fairways. I would definitely play this course again.
Worth playing a couple times
Course is extremely hilly with serious elevation changes. Don't expect to post a good score on your first trip around. Course knowledge would be a benefit. Course not in great shape and the greens were really bumpy making it difficult to make putts. All that being said I would play it again. Great scenery with challenging shot selection and fun driving holes. Good value, I made a tee time on a Saturday evening and got a great tee time for Sunday morning for $60.00/player. In the Bay Area that's not bad.
gem in the hills
One of the prettiest courses in the Bay Area, with jaw-dropping views around every turn. Dramatic elevation changes on most holes. Course is well kept and landscaped to provide the occasional favorable bounce. Greens are contoured and require some strategy. If you can get past the 400 yard straight uphill first hole with a 5, you'll have a great day. My only complaint was pace of play. We went off 45 minutes late on a 1:55 tee time, and had to give up after 16 holes due to darkness.
Decent Value
A lot of muddy spots in fairways and tee boxes even though it hasn't rained in weeks, greens were decent and fairly fast.
Great Views. Fun course to play
Awesome course to play. tons of hills. Would have been faster but had a slow group 4 groups ahead of us that no marshall asked to let the faster players through. looking forward to playing again
Extremely Slow Play
Had a 1:55 Tee Time last Saturday, couldn't finish due to darkness. Never saw a marshall. Course was interesting but round time will make me think twice about coming again.
6 hour round
If you like 6 hour rounds, then by all means, please go play Tilden Park. We didn't see ONE marshal the entire time we were there, and speaking to the two regulars we played with, that's just how it is. They don't care about the pace of play. $50+ round for 6 hours, no thanks. The course isn't that great that I want to wait on every shot. My recommendation is to play ANYWHERE else.
good hilly course
Greens had been punched recently and let to grow out, so were very slow but held line ok. Neat course, challenging and very hilly,no houses around and out in the wilderness, kind of cool.
My favorite public course
Tilden has been and continues to be my favorite course in the East Bay area. The beauty is incredible...I actually saw a deer grazing just below the 14th tee.
FIVESOMES??????
Yesterday we played at this beautiful golf course. The first 8 holes were wonderful.
On the 9th hole we finally caught up with the group in front of us and it took THREE HOURS to finish our round.
The group in front of us told us there was a FIVESOME in front of them that was holding things up.
On hole 11 it got really bad. They had 2 holes open in front of them and made no effort to let anyone play thru or speed up their play. At one point the group in front of us hit into them and they started yelling at each other. . At one time there were 3 groups on a tee box. YOU ARE LUCKY YOU DIDN'T HAVE A BRAWL OUT THERE
I finally called the pro shop and was told "American Golf now allows fivesomes. We are short handed today and have no Marshall. Sorry. There is nothing we can do."
At the end of the round I went to the Pro shop to complain. There were 2 young men there. The same ones who checked me in. They apologized but again repeated that they were short handed and there was nothing they could do. The Assistant Manager WAS TAKING INVENTORY!!!!
Couldn't one of them jumped in a cart and gone out there??? The Assistant Manager couldn't take 15 minutes out from TAKING INVENTORY???
In this day and age of slow play fivesomes SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED.
By making one group happy you made alt least 4 groups VERY UNHAPPY. And who knows how many behind them.
Unfortunately, I will not play this beautiful course again until I hear that you have removed this ridiculous rule of allowing fivesomes. And after talking in the parking lot with the group in front of us and the group behind us, they will not be coming back either.
good conditions, friendly staff
the course was in good overall conditions, but a bit soft and wet for some reason. lots of watering I guess. The 2 ladies in the pro shop were very nice, as were the restaurant personnel.
Interesting layout.
Having played at Lake Chabot all my life, gave Tilden a try. It's not as up and down as Lake Chabot and the drainage is a lot better (greens roll really fast).
Layout was interesting as multiple holes bisect each other. Length of the holes were pretty long compared to other Bay Area courses.
Weather was hot and humid the day I played. Pace on front 9 was fast, but got really slow on the back.
Difficult lies, slow-sloped greens, mature trees, few flat landing areas
Always challenging, fun to play, and in better condition than in years. Still some fairways and greens could use more attention.
Beautiful Course at a Great Price
A must play in the bay area! The elevation changes are amazing. Well maintained and great greens.
Perfect for intermediate
I have played Tilden park numerous times now and have enjoyed it every time.
It can get fogged out in the early mornings, but the greens are above par and well kept.
The course layout is challenging with blind shots and elevated tee's.
I would recommend Tilden Park to amateurs and intermediate alike.
Classical course
It is nice to play at an "old" course where lots of trees with right yardage for older folks to enjoy the game.
Slow start on the back
Pace was slower than last week, plus had to start on back 9. Otherwise, love the course!
Nice course to test your game.
Nice quiet, challenging golf course. Elevation changes are awesome.
One of the best public courses in the East Bay
I've been playing Tilden for 10+ years and always been one of my favorites. It was a very soggy course back in the day with drainage issues, but within the past 3-5 years they have updated the drainage and it is probably one of the best, if not the best, public course in the East Bay. Always a tough opening hole, as I've been told my many people, and they've said it is the toughest #1 hole in the Bay Area! This is a course that is probably best to leave the driver in the bag for a majority of the holes, although some of those holes (#3 especially) where you really want to bomb a drive but laying up is the best bet.
Amazing 3 tier driving range, beautiful scenery on every hole, and the East Bay sunshine make this a top pick anytime!
