Back up on 10! Photo submitted by CTGRANDIN on 12/31/2012
Very slow pace of play with no helpful marshal assistance
It’s been a very long time since I’ve played this course. 15/20 years ago, it used to be in pristine condition and very challenging but fun. The course is still in good condition but it’s obvious that it’s not what the SCGA course used to be.
Today’s experience was pretty bad though. I played with a wonderful couple and although the group in front of us was pretty slow, we finished the front 9 in about 2 1/2
hours. Our tee time was 1:25pm (on a Saturday).
Then came the back 9.
A drunk 5-some who said they were playing best ball, so not to worry about pace of play, cut in front of us on #10 and ended up being a disrespectful, slow, disgusting group of young individuals.
We had to wait on every single hole on the back 9. We even called the clubhouse (twice) and they did nothing about it. It actually got worse.
On the 12th green, I guess their group caught up with another group of friends from earlier and decided to let the group that had been in front of us, play past them so they could all hang and play together. Terrible idea.
Cut to: the 12th green and there were 8 of them on the green. We waited and waited. The marshal came around and we complained to him in the 13th fairway.
A couple holes later, they were still drinking, leaving alcohol cans and boxes on the golf course and playing extremely slow. Slower, in fact.
On the 18th fairway, just as the sun was going down, we waited 30 minutes for 2 of them to clear the green and another two to finish chipping up to the green.
I even yelled and asked them to hurry up so we could finish 18 holes and that made it worse. They didn’t budge an inch and 10 minutes later, I decided to return the cart, not finish the hole and head home.
Those 8 kids should have been kicked off the course. Even more, they should be banned from this course in particular.
Hey, we called and spoke to the clubhouse folks twice and also spoke to the marshals on the course another two times. And no change.
They were holding up the entire back 9. We should all receive a refund for that nonsense. Management grossly failed here.
I love this course. It’s a beautiful layout and quite challenging. All the holes have their own unique character and keep you on your toes with hazards placed in tricky, yet wide open areas.
Today’s round rubbed me the wrong way for this course and I won’t be playing there on the weekends. In that neighborhood, I guess that’s when the drunk kids come out to play and some other very slow golfers as well who were in front of us at first, to take the time to teach others how to play golf. Go to the range!
The management needs to do better. You can’t have 8 people on a green and drinking and holding people up who just paid $70 to enjoy 18 rounds of golf. Unacceptable.
I’ll try playing during the weekdays earlier in the morning. You don’t typically run into drunk, disrespectful folks at that time. *fingers crossed*
Nice little gem
This was my first time playing this course. I enjoyed it , it had some fun holes. It wasn’t overly busy so the pace of play was great. Caught the sunset while we were there. It was beautiful. I would definitely come back.
Pace was really good
Pace is an important part of the game, nothing worse than having to wait 5-10 min at every single hole. Not here, the pace was spot on, had to wait most on hole 10 but the pace picked back up. Course was in decent shape, did not interact with staff much, the guy in pro shop was nice but the starter seemed a little bothered to be there. Overall though it was a good time.
Worth the money
Great course to play with the reasonable green fee.
Well controlled playing pace, fairway and green are both in good shape and friendly staff. Definitely come more often.
Terrible pace
It seems like pace of play continues to get worse without any help from staff.
senior golf.
I'm 79 and play from the senior tees on most golf courses. On this course only 5 holes have the senior tees(Gold) moved up and the other 13 are with the white tees. Also you get very little roll on the fairways. No, I will not play here again!!
Pick a cooler day than I did
Had not played here for about 20 years, but got a deep discount on GN. Course is inland valley, so summer heat and midday winds driven by heating differential between here & the coast can make for difficult conditions. I Usually check extended forecast before booking Temecula Valley, but my guard was down & found out the eve of playing that 101 was expected. Turned out it was only 100, but cart was included, wind, though capricious, made it feel cooler, and pace was whatever we wanted it to be, because most patrons would have chosen a cooler day. Water was only available on 2 holes. Greens were soft, large, & top-notch. Course was a little baked from 3 months of summer, but bare lies were usually only encountered when straying from the fairway. Be prepared to play out of sand, because bunkers were plentiful lining fairways & greenside, while rakes were occasionally hard to find. The course does not have convenient freeway access, & if travels to or from coincide with the notorious Temecula Valley commute, just remember you were warned!
On the Verge
The Golf Club at Rancho California is on the verge of being good. The bones of the course are still fantastic, the Robert Trent Jones. layout has never been an issue. It's been the spotty maintenance record over the last several years that have made it only a maybe play for me as a local. Overall the golf course was fine. Tee boxes not too chopped up. Grass in the fairways. Bunkers are unkempt, but that's more a reflection on the clientele refusing to use a rake vs anything the course can do. The green side bunkers have been replenished with pure white sand. Fairway bunkers have thankfully been kept more compact and firm. Greens were spongy, spotty and bumpy. Played in the afternoon,. so it's not the best reflection of what the course can be. Lastly, we teed off at 3:15 and motored around to the 15th hole in less than 3 hours before hitting a backup. An eager staffer was collecting flags as we finished each hole. The golf shop said cards needed to be in by 6:45. We had 35 minutes to finish and it would have been tight for us to finish the last three holes based on the pace of the groups in front of us.Regardless, the staffer was encouraging us to head in because we were not going to make it. It was a weird request considering the time left on the clock. When we didn't like that option, he told us to move a hole ahead of the group struggling in front of us, we did only to find two groups on the hole in front. At that point, we decided we were done for the day. Golf courses have to find a way to manage the operation better from keeping slow groups moving, to enforcing general upkeep to making the guests feel welcome. We will play here again, but again, we are not rushing back to play here again.
Great and fun course
Nice and yet challenging course. Definitely worthy the drive to come. Will sure return next time.
Bert condition in 10 years
Fairways and greens were the best they’ve been in the last 20 years I’ve been playing this course. Bunkers were the best conditioned sand of any course I’ve played in SoCal area. Came expecting burnt fairways and pocked greens but both were green and lush. If the course didn’t exceed my current golf abilities, I’d drive the 40 miles each way to play it multiple times monthly.
Decent track
Fun layout, decent conditions. One of the few courses that didn’t covid spike their prices
Unfortunate
Everything was good but they really need a course marshal, pro shop staff was great, course condition was mostly good and lay out was good.
My group was 3 and there was a single playing by himself in front of us. 3 of us had to wait for every shot for the single ahead.
Need a course marshal.
The challenge
Good greens and most fairways. Soft greens and tricky to read on some holes. Fairways could use a little grass seed and clutter clearing. Overall good experience
