The Golf Club at Rancho California

Course overall in good shape. Mature trees, decent fairways for middle of desert during CA Drought. Tee boxes in good shape. Greens however, not very good. They were very choppy and rough. I putted on smoother shag carpets. They need to be rolled and cut. Letting them grow during week makes sense especially in this climate but cut them for the weekends and they will look and feel much better.

Played afternoon in the heat of the day. 3 hr round! No delays. Lots of nice people. Some great long holes, tall tee boxes, excellent views. I’ll always come back here!

Nice track to golf. Unfortunately today most of the greens were in terrible shape. Ball would bounce to the hole. Fairways were decent.

We booked a threesome on golfnow. A 4th player joined us. They charged him an extra 10 dollars because he didn’t know us and wanted his ow n cart. No problem. The problem is because he wanted to ride alone they charge our third person to check in 10 dollars extra also. My question is if we only had three playing that day are we gonna be charged 10 extra? That’s not right.

Greens were in very poor condition. I’ll wait a couple month’s before I go back.

We played this course regularly for around 2 years, then took 3 months off. Things have really gone downhill. The fairways and tees have not been mowed for some time. The rough also has not been mowed - it was so bad we lost balls a few feet off the fairway. We even found several other balls, meaning other players had the same problem. The recent green aerification is not healing well. Some areas on the greens were only sand (i.e., no turf underneath), so these will be bare spots when the sand finally settles. Needs a lot of work before we will come back.

Been playing this course for years, but hadn't in a while. The greens, which were always one of the strengths of this course, were in the worst shape I had ever seen and very disappointing. Not so much that they had been punched within the past few weeks, but many of them had large areas of disease or burn so bad there was more dirt than grass. They are soft and will hold your approach, but you better hit it close because they are a challenge to putt in their current condition.

On a positive note, although I was only in two of them, those were some of the best bunkers around to play from.

Greens were a little slow. But that was ok because they were in excellent shape. The fairways were also in good shape as well. Off the fairways looked like they never get mowed.

Started playing this course after it re-opened in the mid 80s after having closed when it was called Rainbow Canyon, the new name was Rancho California Golf Club. Beautiful course, great condition. This was before any homes were built on it, just the mobile home park. And the Clubhouse was a trailer up behind the 18th green. It was a regular stop for us coming from South Orange County. Then the SCGA bought it and what was good, was turned into an absolute gem. Sure over the years, housing developments have gone up around the course and surrounding areas but the course was always in perfect shape. Then the SCGA sold out and since then the course has been in steady decline, but still playable until the past few years where the decline went completely over the ledge. Hadn't played it in about two years until this past sunday for a tournament. Absolute waste of time. To see the condition of this course now compared to what it used to be is a travesty. The greens are horrible, bumpy obviously way over watered. The fairways and tee boxes, crab grass. And the edges of the course, gone, just dirt and weeds. When there's weeds growing in the bunkers, that should really be a clue. Plus in front of us was a very slow foursome, followed by a twosome. Then another twosome playing out of one bag, then the tournament. The first group of the tournament waited for 45 minutes for both twosomes to clear, no sign ever of a marshal or players assistant. It I was one of the homeowners that live on this course, I'd be up in arms over the views and conditions. Having been a long time patron of this place, it was demoralizing to see it like this. New owners are needed and a do over big time.

The course was in great condition. Some areas need some tlc. The staff was not very friendly. The Marshall was rude and pushy. Could of been more professional about communicating with the guess. Won't be going back again. Cherry hills is better in all ways. Their course needs some help, but for the price no one should complain.

The unusual weather made it a very uncrowded day. Grouped with three other GolfNow golfers and it was an enjoyable but humid day. Greens were fast today and held approach shots well.

I play here a lot since I’ve lived on the course for 20 yrs and started playing it in 87’. Everyone I talk to shares their disappointment to its decline. They do the minimum to care for the course. Range balls are a good reflection of my point. A third of every bucket I hit has “bad/old” balls, ridiculous! Management doesn’t seem to care about keeping its customers as the course is rarely busy……they kick people off the course at 7:20pm in the summer, while others (friends of management) are allowed to finish their round. I spend more money here than anywhere, they’ve never offered me a membership…..very disappointing to see a course that used to be a top 50 public course in the nation to what it has become…..

Rancho California is a very good course. Layout is fun and challenging. Greens are in great shape. The pace of play was good, despite a couple of golfers that should not be teeing off pre 7:00 AM on a weekend (as they cannot play well….at all). I’ll be back!

This review doesn’t involve the course which is fine. The problem exists with the additional $10 cart fee. If you book a tee time as a single they will charge you an additional fee even though you paid for the cart through GN. They say the cart must be shared for no fee to be added. Unfortunately, each time (happened to me twice) they say there’s no one to share the cart with. Hence the extra fee. I noticed a threesome went out before me in my GN time slot…10 minutes early. After 5 holes I caught up to the group and spoke with the single. Sure enough he booked a single in the same hot deal time slot as mine and was charged the extra $10. He stated he had no problem with sharing a cart…
