Avalon Country Club

Layout of course is nice but most of the greens are in terrible shape.

It’s a really nice place, it has the country club vibe.(Swimming pool, people just congregating in and around the club house etc.) The staff was friendly and accommodating. However, the greens are in terrible shape and they definitely don’t tell you that up front. There’s dead spots and sand all over the greens. Because of all the sand and soft ground there are “Cicada Killer” Wasps burrowing in the greens, leaving mounds of sand and flying around you while you’re playing. Not exactly ideal. I hate to leave a review like this but hopefully it will give somebody a heads up before they spend their money.

It’s a beautiful layout course, however, the greens are very very bad, if you’re a single number handicap this course is not for you.

I have played Avalon often for 20 years. Bunkers were pitiful for 15 of those and now are playable. Tees aren't level on 5 tees and 9 need some grass. The greens are the worst in the Knoxville area. 3 of the greens aren't playable and 4 have little bent grass to putt on. Layout is awesome along with facilities.

The course was in great shape except for a handful of greens. They have some kind of burrowing bee/wasp that has eaten a couple of greens so badly they are unplayable. Other greens without the bug are in great shape. Made for inconsistent conditions which lowered my score for value for the money. How about a discount when you are struggling with greens? Pace of play was decent. It was nice to have a cart girl on property selling beverages.

I got my teetime on GolfNow and got paired up with 3 members. At first I was a little annoyed that I couldn't play alone, but getting paired up was truly a treat and a blessing. The members helped a lot with course knowledge and were very pleasant people in general.

The course was a lot of fun, with plenty of unique challenges. Prior to the start of the round, the area was hit hard by a storm so there were plenty of soggy areas, but it didn't affect the quality of play very much. The only negative I could say about the course was that a few greens had some dead spots from disease, and the 11 green was literally unplayable. That's a shame because it was the only blemish on this jewel of a course. Three holes require carrying water hazards which adds another dimension of fun and challenge. I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

The greens have FINALLY recovered. Last year 2019 was a nightmare for this fine golf course. A fungus destroyed the greens and it took a Herculean effort and a lot of work to conquer the beast. My first round at Avalon for 2020 was a pleasant surprise as I found the greens to be almost fully recovered. That being said, the course was otherwise, as usual, very well maintained. Fairways and bunkers were in very good shape. Avalon has upgraded facilities which were already above average. The carts are a cut above, with GPS and computerized scoring. They are always clean and well maintained with an automatic breaking system which protects you from losing control on some of the steep cart path sections. The staff in the pro shop, restaurant , beverage cart and support are friendly and pleasant. This course has a very good layout with a challenging array of holes. If you’ve never played it, you should. If you sat out 2019 because of the greens, it’s time to give it another chance. You’ll be glad you did.

The bunkers major over haul is a success, lot of winter kill throughout the course, however, the greens are in serious distress. Avalon is almost back to the original days.

The course, staff, and carts are all incredible. I would recommend this to everyone. You won’t be disappointed.

Avalon is a beautiful, well-kept, and fun course for golfers of all different skill levels. I am always impressed with how nice the staff is and well-maintained the course is. Much improved under the new management. I would highly recommend this course to any golfer. Hole 17 might be the best hole in Knoxville.

I’ve played this course two times now and I really like the layout of the place. It has forgiving fairways, but plenty of elevation to keep things interesting. The staff is super friendly and they have a refreshment cart making loops around the course. Carts are also top of the line. Great course, would recommend.
