Not like it once was
It's a shame but course has deteriorated over the years. What was once Knox Co finest has not become another place to go play a round.......For what I paid it was a great value, wouldn't recommend over $30
senior view point
Every thing very good, but need 90degrees for seniors.
Avalon Fist time
Very good course condition considering the winter we had here and the extreme heat.
Fairways
The only thing I can say bad about this course is the fairways had a rough winter.you could not drive on 14 of the 18 fairways.( I'm not a walker)
Don't recommend
While normally Avalon is a good course, with VERY challenging greens, the course is in absolutely horrible shape.
First up, there isn't a single bunker that is playable. It's all packed in and clay based. Liners are showing through what little sand is there. Rocks (big ones) in a lot of the bunkers too.
I played 6-7 weeks ago and they had just "sprigged" the entire course because of "winter damage". We played anyway...but it was horrible. Standing water throughout the course. It was so bad we stopped playing after 8 holes and went to another course.
We came back 5 weeks later and while a little better, you could still only drive your cart on like 4 fairways. Still, bunkers horrible and a lot of the fairway was still under repair.
I played this week and because of rain the night before it was "cart path only". The course was NOT that wet, I believe they were just taking extra precaution and didn't want anyone drive on the fairways. The problem is this: I had to pay 30 on a LATE Thursday afternoon...on a course that was cart path only...on greens that had been aerated the week before and they thought I was getting a good deal It was awful. They have A LOT of work to do on that course.
Finally, the course is absolutely full of geese, with goose droppings so bad on number 17 we couldn't even putt.
There are a lot better options in Knoxville. I would recommend playing elsewhere for the foreseeable future.
Nice but greens need a couple more weeks
Played on a day with rain threatening that kept everyone else away. Course in nice shape except the greens. Recently plugged and sanded and are still very slow. They hold well but not putting well. Course was wet from rain the day before. Typically the greens are much better and faster. They just need a couple weeks to get back.
Maybe it was the rain but the bunkers were not in good shape. Many fist size rocks throughout. Some looked washed out with very little sand left in them.
Great value and a nice course.
Avalon is a great coarse. The course condition is getting much better. The fairways have almost grown back, and the overall condition is very good.
Great layout
The course was great, but they had fairway and teebox issues so as far as riding we could've walked the course. The greens were in great shape and all in all the course when healthy is wonderful.
Juice isn't worth the squeeze
I have to say the quality of the course this year does not match what we paid to play. The greens were difficult to hold, the fairways marginal with more grass needed, and the two sand traps I found myself in had plenty of rocks to deal with.
The pace of play was also an issue - we teed off nearly half an hour after our scheduled tee time; poor planning on the part of the starter and rangers (there were both, and still took forever. They asked us to wait, beside the "members only" range, or go use the range where you had to buy tokens. Nice.
If it weren't for the company, it would have been a two-star experience.
just wanna have fun.
The course is challenging. Is a great course to get use of your drivers and hone in on your skills. Definitely not a beginner course.
SHOULD BE RATED LOWER NOW - ONE STAR!
The course is unplayable - even under "winter rules" in July. They lost many of the Bermuda fairways due to cold weather and poor fairway maintenance last winter, and they waited until July to repair them! Many fairways have been sprigged, and are almost under water due to heavy watering. Many tees are bare. One green ##6# is Zoysia, and in good shape, while the other 17 are Bent and ok, but pretty thin. The bunkers are AWFUL! There is no sand in most of them - just rocks. Our group decided to take a free drop out of the bunkers with no penalty, to prevent club damage. I played with a member who said the Men's group at Avalon has a similar rule.
It was a beautiful day, but very slow due to cart path only on most of the holes, 5.5 hours for 18 holes! The guest rate with a member was low, but it was still too high! We could have played in a cow pasture and had more fun. At least the beer was good!
This course has been in bad shape for several years, this one being the worst. They should close it, and fix it up. The word will get out about the current condition, and people won't return. It is a good layout, and the greens, which are very undulating and challenging, are in fair condition, although the grass is thin #except on #6#. Hopefully the repair work will take hold soon, and if they put some sand in the bunkers, it could be a really good course.
Meanwhile, Golfnow should put an asterisk on this course and warn users of the condition.
Fun test of golf with nice views
This is a nice course to look at, greens are fairly smooth and receptive, and I played very quickly.
They have lost some of the fairways, especially on the front, but they have recently sprigged them to try and bring them back. Back 9 in much better condition.
A nice mix of easy and challenging holes gives you a chance to score.
Not a walking course.
Damaged
Course was cart path only for all but 3 holes, not mentioned when booking. If grass comes back it would be a nice course. Pre booking staff mentioned that fairways had be "sprigged" but not that they were cart path only. Fair value for this course would be $40 if in good shape.
The corse is in poor condition
More than half the fairway were being reseeded and that meant we had cart path only. They even had the sprinklers running, I would not play this course now.
Disappointed
Fairways were still suffering from the winter freeze. Court path only on 13 holes due to watering to try and recover the fairways. Would not had played it, if I had known in advance before booking through golfnow.com.
Avalon
Avalon books this as a premier course. However I reccomend you check with the course before booking to check conditions. Before we started the staff did say they were having bermuda grass issues, but I have never been on a course when they turn on the sprinklers while you were playing the course. Also had to move balls many times because they had soaked the grass so much it was like hitting in mud, maybe it will improve but very disappointed wouldn't play again without improvements, especialliy when there is a better course only about 5 miles down the road.
Terrible Conditions - No warning
Dead Fairways - Sprigged new Bermuda so they were watering the fairways while we were playing. The course was literally a swampy mud puddle. Starter told us to hit your shot, pick up your ball and try to find a dry area to drop for your next shot. We did this all day everywhere. What a mess. They should have posted a warning but they did not. In fact I checked their website the next morning and there is no mention of any problems. I played here 10 years ago and it was very well taken care of then. They have let it go to pieces. Would not play here again even if it was free.
swamp like
The course is undergoing bermuda repairs and 14 holes were cart path only. Those holes had standing water and some had continious sprinkler spray. For $30 it was way to much. They need to close front 9 untill it heals.Golfnow should have an icon for course conditions(flooding, plugging etc).golfnow should have a link to icon info/meaning.
Course in horrible condition
They should have Closed the Course while they are repairing it. 90 percent of the fairways were saturated with water, you could not hit from 90 percent of them, even moving your ball to semi dry area. They were obviously repairing the Fairways, but that is no excuse. If they needed that much work, which they did, they should have closed the Course till was repaired, or work out a deal with Willow Creek like Willow Creek did with them when they were working on their course....
Give it a month
The entire course is under repair, don't play here until fixed
