Great outing
Enjoyed the course very much. Course was busy and the cart path only conditions led to a slow round but the views are great and the greens were very good. Always fun to play Avalon.
A surprise awaits
Avalon is a very nice course with easy access off I-40. There are some great holes along with some average holes. Overall the courses was in very good shape except the bunker, which need sand. I actually hit a shot into one and the surface was so hard, the ball bounced out. I must admit that I was really expecting even better conditions considering the high-end houses along most of the fairways I did not eat in the clubhouse but I noticed that they had some specials. I also noticed that the merchandise in the pro shop was lacking. There is also a lot of noise from the interstate nearby.
I will be back for a great golf course, however.
it's all about ball placement
I'm not the best golfer in the world. I've shot a 74 there and I've shot a 88 there. its all about ball placement. Enjoy it's a great course
excellent course
Cart path rules was a little aggravating but they're doing it for the greater good. I loved this course, it was peaceful and beautiful. Sand traps had rocks in them is the only thing I can say bad about it. Yes I will go back! 98% positive and 2% negative
Avalon
I good day of golf. The course is in pretty good condition. The round took quite a long time to finish because of strange cart path rules. I was also disappointed in the condition of the sand traps on the course. Another local golfer described it as "Gravalon". I would think with their rates there would be more sand than gravel in their hazards. Be prepared to likelihood that you'll damage your equipment if you decide to play out of them.
The greens were soft and accepting of approach shots. And very challenging quick putting speed.
Overall, The course is in good condition except for their sand traps.
Good Layout, Poor Bunker Conditions, Nearly Unplayable Greens
I have played this course about a dozen times, but the most recent was in 2007.
Good points about this course: course layout and condition of fairways
Need for Improvement: bunkers need some work.....lots of rocks and some were dirt filled.....little or no sand. Also, the speed of the greens was way too fast for the amount of undulation. There is a difference between challenging and unplayable. These were close to unplayable.
The speed of the greens was the primary factor in the slow pace of play.
I probably won't be back. 4 hours and 50 minutes for this round was too much.....the unplayable greens made this one of my least enjoyable rounds in quite some time.
Fun
The course has some rough spots on the fairways and greens, but it is evident that they are trying to improve the conditions.
Nice layout with challenges and rewards. Good value and worth the trip.
Good course
The fairways are nice and greens are fast. The sand traps have rocks the size of your fist and they have about 1 inch of sand then hard clay.
Beautiful, challenging & tiring.
Course was excellent but driving on fairway holes was ridiculous. There was only 5 holes allowing 90 degree rule; one might as well be walking and save money. Too expensive to play 18 with a cart and have to walk to all balls on 13 holes.
Avalon Golf Course
Great layout. Nice and open. Clubhouse is average. Excellent Par 5's and fairly well maintained! A great course overall for the price.
Always a pleasure
Hard to find fault with Avalon.
Sandtraps are not on the same level of quality as everything else!!!!
Not like it once was
It's a shame but course has deteriorated over the years. What was once Knox Co finest has not become another place to go play a round.......For what I paid it was a great value, wouldn't recommend over $30
senior view point
Every thing very good, but need 90degrees for seniors.
Avalon Fist time
Very good course condition considering the winter we had here and the extreme heat.
Fairways
The only thing I can say bad about this course is the fairways had a rough winter.you could not drive on 14 of the 18 fairways.( I'm not a walker)
Don't recommend
While normally Avalon is a good course, with VERY challenging greens, the course is in absolutely horrible shape.
First up, there isn't a single bunker that is playable. It's all packed in and clay based. Liners are showing through what little sand is there. Rocks (big ones) in a lot of the bunkers too.
I played 6-7 weeks ago and they had just "sprigged" the entire course because of "winter damage". We played anyway...but it was horrible. Standing water throughout the course. It was so bad we stopped playing after 8 holes and went to another course.
We came back 5 weeks later and while a little better, you could still only drive your cart on like 4 fairways. Still, bunkers horrible and a lot of the fairway was still under repair.
I played this week and because of rain the night before it was "cart path only". The course was NOT that wet, I believe they were just taking extra precaution and didn't want anyone drive on the fairways. The problem is this: I had to pay 30 on a LATE Thursday afternoon...on a course that was cart path only...on greens that had been aerated the week before and they thought I was getting a good deal It was awful. They have A LOT of work to do on that course.
Finally, the course is absolutely full of geese, with goose droppings so bad on number 17 we couldn't even putt.
There are a lot better options in Knoxville. I would recommend playing elsewhere for the foreseeable future.
Nice but greens need a couple more weeks
Played on a day with rain threatening that kept everyone else away. Course in nice shape except the greens. Recently plugged and sanded and are still very slow. They hold well but not putting well. Course was wet from rain the day before. Typically the greens are much better and faster. They just need a couple weeks to get back.
Maybe it was the rain but the bunkers were not in good shape. Many fist size rocks throughout. Some looked washed out with very little sand left in them.
Great value and a nice course.
Avalon is a great coarse. The course condition is getting much better. The fairways have almost grown back, and the overall condition is very good.
Great layout
The course was great, but they had fairway and teebox issues so as far as riding we could've walked the course. The greens were in great shape and all in all the course when healthy is wonderful.
Juice isn't worth the squeeze
I have to say the quality of the course this year does not match what we paid to play. The greens were difficult to hold, the fairways marginal with more grass needed, and the two sand traps I found myself in had plenty of rocks to deal with.
The pace of play was also an issue - we teed off nearly half an hour after our scheduled tee time; poor planning on the part of the starter and rangers (there were both, and still took forever. They asked us to wait, beside the "members only" range, or go use the range where you had to buy tokens. Nice.
If it weren't for the company, it would have been a two-star experience.
