Fairways in poor shape
The course had to sprig some fairways. The majority of the fairways were ground under repair. I would wait a while for the grass to come back before playing here. Pace was extremely slow.
Swamp
Don't play this course till they have all there issues worked out. They had a grass disease and almost every fairway was a swampy mess. Hard to find plugged balls. Sprinklers on constantly. Give it till next year. Good course other than that
Avalon golf ??
Major repair going on and several holes were not playable in my opinion.
Due to overwatering of the Bermuda sprigged areas much of the none damaged areas of the fairways were unplayable due to standing water and super saturated areas.
A big disappointment. To add insult to an already tough situation a two some (couple) was allowed to jump on 10 at the turn in front of us - the female picked up after her ball after her fourth shot still had her not 50 yards from her tee box.
Shut it down!
This course is in absolutely horrendous condition and should be shut down immediately for repair! Only 4 holes can be driven on with cart and fairways are full of mud!
Soggy
The course was in very poor condition. The only part that was in good shape was the greens. The fairways were very soggy and many areas of the fairway were roped off. If I had known the course was under repair, I wouldn't have played it! Normally this is a nice course but the pace was slow and the course not in good shape!
Long Winter hurts
Avalon has always been a premiere course in the Knoxville area. Due to the recent winter being long and extremely cold a lot of the fairways have been lost. They are trying to bring the fairways back through sprigging. This seems to be the case with most Bermuda courses around the area. Greens in great shape. Pace of play was extremely slow, mostly contributed to the situation with the fairways & most of the course being cart path only because of it.
awful. never again
This place should not be open. Smells awful. Never again for me 30 dollars to play in those conditions. I've prob. Played there 100 times
Course Alert of "Upgrading Fairways" not adequate
I normally really enjoy playing at Avalon. This time I saw there was a course alert of "Upgrading Fairways through sprigging", but I had no idea the course conditions would have been so bad. The greens were in excellent shape, but almost every fairway was marked as Ground Under Repair and were a muddy mess. We had received a lot of rain in the last few days, but they stated that the sprinkler timers were still active and soaking already saturated soil. I am not upset with their efforts to restore their fairways, but more so with the lack of explanation at the time of booking. The course is not worth the $30 price tag at this point. I realize they have cut the prices to account for the conditions, but it is still too high currently.
Absolute Joke
Avalon has the more potential than most golf courses, unfortunately this course is one of the worst around. They have watered the fairways so much that they are literally swamps and most fairways are painted as unplayable. Lets not forget to mention how nice it is to see the sprinklers still spraying on 4 holes at 4:00 in the afternoon. All of the loose sod around the greens is a nice touch as well. Oh and the sand traps....I think they should be called gravel pits. This place is an absolute joke as I mentioned in the subject line. Do yourself a favor and skip this course.
This course is a solid track
Unfortunately, the course had a lot of winter kill this past year and was extremely wet due to continuous watering conditions to regain the fairways. It was cart path only for the entire round. The carts had no GPS. So, the SkyCaddie came in handy. The layout with all of the positioning bunkers and carries over water would provide a challenge for all levels. The greens were in excellent shape, the ball spin nicely and the ball rolled without any bumps.
Over priced swamp
It had rained recently, so I can understand cart path only. But to be running the sprinklers and hve 75% of the fairways marked as ground under repair and STILL charge $40 a round.. Ridiculous. Won't be playing here for a LONG time. Greens were fantastic, but that's about it. Only 2 or 3 level tee boxes.
Great track - especailly when the fairways come back to 100%
What a great layout! If the fairways were 100%, I would have rated it excellent throughout. There are some fairways that are 30% lost and others that look pretty good. It didn't bother me because I just moved the ball into good grass :). I will say the greens are excellent - very receptive and rolled true. 17 and 18 are the two best finishing holes I've played. I will definitely return to play again. If you don't hit it 250 - 260+ consistently off the tee, I would play from the whites.
Very nice course, can't wait to play it again
The only problem I had was the rate at the course,It was $3 more than what it said on golf now.
Poor fairways
Do not let anyone kid you.. The fairways are extremely burnt out on almost every hole but the greens were great. We teed off at 8 am and there were no markers down on any of the tee boxes so we had no idea where to tee off from. We had maintenance crews following us on every hole, which was just odd having the same guy on a mower following you for the entire round. It's truly a shame because this course has so much potential but it really seems like the staff doesn't care about the course or the customer. I will not be returning at any point to play golf here, there are much better options out there.
Fairways in rough shape
Greens were wonderful, and the layout was challenging for me. Most of the fairways were void of grass in some small and some large spots. Probably due to our rough winter. A lot of elevation change I was not expecting on the course. One par 3 on the front had a temporary green. Once the fariways recover this should be a great course. I found 2 bunkers on the back 9 with 1/2" of sand and then hard ground. What a surprise when my ball screamed out of the bunker.
Nice greens, poor fairways
There are Many more courses I would rather play for the price than this course. Course is challenging but fairways are very poor and I've played there 2x now in couple months. There are cheaper courses that have the same quality.
great greens
The greens were immaculate. I think the abnormally cold winter damaged the fairway grass, which I've seen at other area courses this year too. The layout is really good, I like the banked fairway edges that tend to funnel a wayward ball back toward the fairway. The bunkers are in good shape - some lesser area courses don't even have bunkers. Avalon is my favorite Knoxville course.
Fairways were wet and bare
The greens were good and pretty fast. The hard part was hitting them from the bare wet fairways. I did notice there was fertilizer down on them
Poor Customer Service
I booked a tee time on GolfNow.com for the following day. Shortly after I was called in to work which meant I would have to put off playing for a day. I called the pro shop, not asking for a refund of my money but simply to move me back a day. They laughed at me and said I needed to call GolfNow to straighten it out. I guess that customer satisfaction is not a top priority with Avalon. I play 2-3 times a week and try to do all the courses surrounding Knoxville. It's a shame to have to knock Avalon off the list over poor customer service.
What happened to this place?
This used to be my favorite course in the area, but I was shocked at the current condition this course is in. There was no grass in the fairways, and I mean none in many places, tee boxes gone, covered in weeds, etc. I just couldnt get over it. The greens were in very good shape, but that was it. Oh, except for #6, where the pin was placed in the middle of the fairway 40 yds from the green. No warning of this, no idea how far it was or anything. Will not be playing here anytime soon, but hope they can get the ship righted.
