From the practice green you can see parts of over half the holes on the front nine. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 07/15/2017
Always a Fun Course
Bristow is in solid shape (June 2025) this year. Finished a Friday AM round in 4.5 hrs. The staff are always very friendly. Solid clubhouse food with great staff. For those that haven't played Bristow, the front 9 and back 9 present entirely different playing styles. The front has 6/9 holes crossing a creek. It makes for fun target golf, but almost every tee box requires some thoughtful club selection to land safely. Back 9 is much more enjoyable IMHO, beautiful scenery with more open fairways. Half of the bunkers are in awful shape. Greens in solid shape, as are tee boxes.
Drinking water on the course
It is summer 80 + degrees. Don’t force us to buy from the cart always. Give us a choice. Water is essential, basic. Don’t fleece players.
Great Day at Bristow Manor
Conditions were perfect. Beautiful fairways and greens throughout. No houses on course and one of the flattest courses in NOVA, which is a nice change from all the hills and uneven eyes you normally get on NOVA public courses.
A Nice Course and in Mostly Very Good Shape
I've only played here once before but recently enough to know what to expect. The front nine is mostly flat with some challenging, especially 7-9. The back 9 is different story---its got more elevation changes and a more engaging layout.
The course was generally in very good shape with the exception of some of the bunkers. At least a half dozen of them needed serious attention, which can't be a surprise to the management. I was surprised to be about the only person not in a cart on a course that is not that difficult to traverse on foot and that measures exactly 7.5 miles to walk .
Love Bristow Manor
Been coming here for the last 5 years. Never disappointed, always in good shape, layout, greens, and great practice facilities area. Thank you
Water on the course
Please provide water on the course and ice for the ice coolers . It is summer .
Boring sloppy design
Condition was okay and so was price when you get a hot deal but the design was pretty bad. Requires so many of the same tee shot, not even enough for driver and just got redundant. Condition was fine
Great grass
This course is always well maintained and has great fairways. Grass is lush. Nice to be able to practice off of grass at the range. Greens are also in good shape and roll well.
Marshals need training
Start time was 640am. I was a single and paired up at the course. No problem. A third golfer was added to our group for total of 3. Played first 6/7 holes without event, and then a Marshall approached to inform us at #8 we were at 2 hours and needed to pick it up. The foursome behind us was in site but I never saw them wait or hit into us. I did see that they were on the side of fairways looking for errant balls often though. At the 9th hole they approached me and told us to pick it up. I offered to let them play through and they accepted. Then we waited for 5+ minutes as they completed their chips onto the green. Flag was pulled and they began their putting routines and we decided to continue out to our 2nd shots. We putted out and they were still not on the tee. We assumed they decided not to play through so we went to #10 and proceeded with our round. I would have bought lunch but felt rushed and hoped a beverage cart might show up on the back nine. Nope. Just marshals. We never saw foursome behind us again. At #13 another marshal asked us to pick up our pace. Again no one behind us, and no one in front of us. At #16 another marsall told us to pick it up. I noticed that we were on about a 4 hour/10 minute pace. Finished the round at 11am.
The course was pretty wet and the rough was high making it difficult to find balls quickly. The course played very long (from yellow tees). I shot an 88 (I am a 13.5 Index), but it was a fun day except for the issue with the group behind us and the marshals. BTW, we were playing with a marshal from BM (he was our 3rd). Perhaps the marshals should get some training. I love fast golf and a reasonable pace. I think if we had been allowed to walk the round would have easily been under 4 hours. No beverage cart on a weekend?? Not sure if I'll play here again given the experience.
Good layout but pace of play was bad!
Overall, the course staff is pleasant. Started left a lot to be desired especially considering he didn’t even have his shirt tucked in. There were tee times every 10 mins, which led to a painful 5:15 hour round. I would recommend the course, but not when as crowded. This was also painful because they had 5sones in a few groups. 18th hole needs a lot of work too. Overall, my favorite part was the cafe, the cafe staff, and their food.
