vastly improved
like new club house great bang for buck start of season fair price course best condition ive seen here people friendly 3 hour early am round shove the pricy courses who charge big and don't tell you cart path only after you show up also so many put to locals no hi season discounts hay we support you all summer
New owners - super friendly.
Wider than it appears. Greens in great shape but slightly slow. Great service and very friendly staff.
Nice layout with variety of holes, lengths, doglegs.
Challenges but reasonable.
The upgrades are impressive.
Really good job of improving the course and making it more playable. The old Sanctuary course was fun, but now it is polished.
Cart Path Ony
Too hilly to play when cart path only rules in effect. More frustrating in that those rules were not advertised to be in effect when we played.
A nice course, but not a must play
this is a nice course, good layout, some interesting holes and relatively playable for most golfers, with lots of tee choices. So, its a four star place, particularly if you can get a reasonable rate (e.g. uner $80). BUT, despite the marketing material, it does not have great views from most holes - to the contrary, the fairways are generally built below very tall berms on either side, so any chance of seeing the mountains or desert are blocked by those side berms. The holes are well manicured and maintained, but given the number of courses with wide open views, this one suffers by comparison. Worst of all, the pace of play was terrible on the day we played - even though we were told when we got there at 11:30 for a noon tee time that the course was empty and we could go when we wanted. As a twosome, it took 3 hr. 45 minutes to play (even with cartpath only that's a very slow round for two), even playing through a relatively slow foursome walking the course. Worst of all, we never saw a marshall trying to speed things along - NOT ONCE.
In short, if you can get a really good rate and you're looking for a nice course - but nothing spectacular, as so many courses in the area are -- it is worth the trip. But it is not a "must play" venue.
Challenging but Fair
We had a great time and played in 4 hours. The only issue was we had to stay on the cart path due to recent overseeding. The course has a variety of hole layouts and multiple tee combinations to meet the needs of most golfers. The green speed was also slower due to the overseeding but I would definitely return to play it at a different time.
Always an enjoyable round
Friendly staff and course just coming out of overseeding, so cart path only. However it's to be expected this time of year. Can't wait to go back!
great forgiving course, wide landing areas
Only negative was recent reopening which made greens brutally slow. Putts even zig sagged lol. In a week or two probably be great shape.
cart girl Terri was a highlight! Friendly and fun.
Redesign helped the clubhouse, not the course
Just overseeded, cart path only. Still an interesting layout. The redesign added new back tees for more yardage, and seems to have turned a lot of desert into grass, and cleared out the cactus and brittlebush from the remaining desert, so finding a wayward shot is easier, and many fewer forced carries. And some bunkers seem to be missing? Much expanded practice areas. If you play from the same tees you always did, it's an easier course, more wide open. And they reversed the nines, which I don't like. The old 17 and 18 (8 and 9 now) were great finishing holes, the new 18th not so much. The remodeled restaurant is pretty, bigger TVs. Good job there. I liked the course better before, more character, lower greens fees.
Very nice layout.
People were very accommodating. Pace of play very good. Greens were slow but we were warned ahead of time. The course was fun to play.
Not as advertised
Will never play this course again. We searched GolfNow for a course that did not have cart path only and found McDowell Mountain. We booked an early tee time at 7:36am so we could beat the heat and were excited when my friend visiting from Scotland and I were able to get out as a pair early. We were highly disappointed when Tito the marshall informed us that the course was cart path only on the first tee. We said it was NOT advertised that way on Golfnow and his reply was we could go back to the clubhouse and get a full money refund. We would not have chosen that course or any course that had cart path only but since we had gotten up at 6am to play we felt like we had no other option but to play. It was not a good experience. Not only was it cart path only but the greens were extremely slow to the point you couldn't possibly judge line or distance. I don't think they had been mowed in days, it was that bad.
Very disappointed that GolfNow did not have McDowell Mountain listed as cart path only on the website and will never play this course again.
Very well groomed & beautiful facility
Course just reopened after reseeding so cart path only rule required a lot of walking. Greens were very slow also due to reseeding. Overall a very beautiful & friendly golf course! I will definitely play it again in Mar/April.
mosquito mountain
course was fine. Mosquitoes were unbearable to the point of running up to the ball and hitting as quickly as you could. No warning from pro shop from whom we bought repellant at the turn at a pretty steep price. Never again.
Great Course
If a straight hitter not a problem, if a slicer or hooker narrow fairways can cause problems.
Great Course
Great experience. Staff was very helpful, course was in great shape. Greens rolled well. Can't wait to go back.
WEEK BEFORE OVERSEEDING
THE LAST TIME I PLAYED THIS COURSE IT WAS NAMED SANCTUARY. APPEARENTLY IT IS UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP AND THE IMPROVEMENTS TO THE FACILITIES AND COURSE ARE VERY OBVIOUS. THE CLUBHOUSE AND EXPANDED PATIO AREA ARE VERY INVITING EVEN IF YOU WERENT PLAY A ROUND. THE COSMETIC IMPROVEMENTS AROUND THE COURSE PRIMARILY FOCUS ON ROCK FORMATIONS TO DRESS UP COMMON AREAS AND TRANSITIONS. AND THEY ALSO REVERSED THE FRONT AND BACK NINE HOLES TO CHANGE THINGS UP FROM BEFORE. THE COURSE CONDITIONS WERE AS YOU WOULD EXPECT FOR A WEEK BEFORE SHUTDOWN; DRY, SHORT CUT FAIRWAYS AND GREENS. WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK TO SEE THE COURSE ONCE IT IS GREEN AND LUSH.
dry for overseeding... rained out. :-(
Let me begin by saying that McDowell Mountain Golf Club is a very nice club and a well-designed course. The staff were dutiful and polite, the facilities very nice. I was disappointed in the course conditions, but they were preparing for overseed, letting the summer grass die, and I guess there's little that can be done about that. Needs to happen sometime or another.
What I was disappointed in, however, was the fact that I was unable to get a rain-check when my round got rained-out because "I got the daily GolfNow 12:06 discount rate and we don't make any money off that rate". While maybe true, I found that to be a tasteless response to a first-time customer who would otherwise be glad to come back and experience the full course in better conditions. Not classy, McDowell Mtns GC!
McDowell Mountain
Preparing for overseeding therefore course was in so-so condition. Will go back to see what the condition is in a more normal time.
Good end of summer value!
I have played this course two years ago and because I enjoyed that experience it beckoned me back. Other than just getting ready for over seeding, it was great. The long hot summer had its way with the fairways. Based on the machinery on the course and the scalping I under guess that the over seeding process is well underway. We had a warm day and overall a great day to golf. My wife shot her best score of 106 and I was pleased with my 85. I would play it again especially at the golfnow.com price which was a third off regular pricing.
