#5 approach shot. Cool shot with the mountain in the background. Photo submitted by ryantjeerdsma on 09/24/2013
Course has improved versus 2 years ago. Cart path only restriction should have been disclosed BEFORE golfers book.
Golfers assume normal conditions unless advised differently. Golfers should be advised prior to booking.
very good condition, tees for any player.
very good early november conditoon pace was great. staaff was friendly will play again
This course has fantastic views of the valley.
The new clubhouse is beautiful. The staff is very friendly. The course was still "cart path only" after reseeding, and was in excellent shape. The course itself was challenging not necessarily because of it's length, but the fact that there is not a flat spot on the course other than the tee boxes. It has the feel of links style fairways that carries through the greens. The course is very "lady friendly" also. All in all, a great experience that I'm looking forward to playing again.
Nice track!
Staff was super friendly, course was in great condition for the most part. Cart path only because of overseeding but still got off the course in under 4 hours. Great pace of play. Would definitely go back.
This is AZ Golf at its Best
McDowell Mountain is Desert golf at it's finest and is what every other course in Phoenix should aspire too The course layout and conditions are top notch as well as the service too. The two things that stood out to me were the proper spacing of tee times, as to avoid back ups, and the different tee boxes were spaced out very well so the course can be very challenging from the tips and very playable from the forward tees. All the amenities follow suit and are exemplary. Phil Mickelson got it right attaching his brand to this course.
great new clubhouse
Course was fun, staff friendly very nice change from their previous course
A few issues
Nice course but it was cart path only. We started 20 minutes late which was frustrating. The course was in good shape.
Good course,great staff.
Hidden gem!! Great staff, good condition, good layout. Green's needed a little work, could be time of year. Walkable course which prefer to do!!! Club house and patio have been updated and are great!!!!!
Course quality
Course was in great shape considering the overseeding
I am disappointed Lefty!
At. Fog into consideration that it was right after the overseeding, the greens were very slow, which we expected, that does not excuse the shape of the sand traps. Some of the traps had been tracked and only had a few stones in them, while others had not seen a raking and had more stones then sand.
The course itself does not have very nice views or many picturesque holes, so not a PLAY AGAIN course for us. The rough looks like it needs work, it resembles a rock quarry, with piles of tailings just dumped randomly. You play a few holes under power lines that are humming so loud it is a bit disconcerting and needless to say not very visually appealing.
They did not include range balls or yardage book in the price. The yardage markings on the course are poor, so a laser is necessary.
Not worth the time
I played on 10/3/2013. What I didn't realize and wasn't told beforehand was that they were in the throes of over seeding. I booked as a single on line and then when I arrived at the course I was told that the threesome that I was supposed to join, the threesome that had booked their time on line also, showed up as a foursome and they could probably fit me in later. I wasn't pleased and after talking to the pro shop was fitted in close to my tee time. Then I endured a 5 hour round, teeing off around 9 a.m. mind you. When I asked the course ranger what was the hold up he said he was "working" with a couple of groups ahead of us. Well, that didn't work obviously. The group behind us kept hitting into us even though we told them we had to wait to get off each tee for the group ahead of us. They and the group behind them quit playing at the 16th hole and just passed us on the cart path and drove to the clubhouse.
The over seeding crew was so obnoxious and created such a cloud of dust that there were two greens with so much dust and grass flying through the air that we had to pick up our ball and forget about putting out. Wasn't there a better way for them to do this? The only saving grace is that I got a good deal online, but they're going to have to have some real special to draw me back. I can play courses just as nice for 1/2 the price of this and get treated like I'm a valued customer.
Needed to warn us that they were killing all the grass
I understand that the course needs to be overseeded and that immediately prior to this they need to dry out the course and kill the grass. I just ask that when this is happening, you should provide a warning on the website prior to having people pay to play the course in that condition.
Pre-Overseed conditions
Mowers were everywhere, scalping fairways and rough. Lots of dust and grass flying around due to the mowing. Hard to find balls due to mowed debris/grass being left on ground. Pretty steep prices considering the condition of the course. Practice greens closed.
Nice course, but the grass was all brown and dead
Not in good shape. Grass was dead and brown. Greens were in good shape
Very nice format.
Course was in the process of being reseeded. There have been some really great changes made to the course since I played there last. Absolutely worth playing.
Not the most scenic.
I played on Oct. 1st and to be fair they were preparing for over seeding, however, the greens were very bumpy and very hard to putt. I just think that for the money there are far better courses for not much more money.
greens were great, fairways were scalped
The course is in good condition. The only negative of the day, which was really not a good thing, was the maintenance crew
was out in force scalping the grass while we were playing! The dust that was created was unbelievable, not to mention extremely unhealthy to breathe. Otherwise it was a good golfing experience. I will return after overseeding.
Needs lots of work
I play about 75 rounds a year here in Scottsdale, so I feel I understand how golf courses here operate. Out of the gate, we were charged $6.50 for 36 warm up balls. Do real golf courses do this? Went to the practice green & it is built on such a slant, you can't even practice level putts. Why? The course is getting ready to reseed. In fact they were scalping the course while we were playing. Mowers were mowing behind greens & wouldn't stop for incoming shots or putting. Other Scottsdale courses close to do this work. Greens were bumpy & brown. On the positive side they have placed deer sculptures around the course that are very nice, but I won't come back just for sculptures.
dry and fast
needs water everywhere. local knowledge would help avoiding fairway bunkers. lots of roll in fairway. but fun to play. $3 happy hour all good. any beer tap or premium bottle ;-)

Good course for a good price
Great course a lot of fun and a good course to score on... Some holes are average but other holes can be challenging and a lot of fun to play... If you hug the long ball play from the back tees either way a good classic Scottsdale desert course
