Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

3rd Ace
How can I write a bad review when I got a hole in one on the 12th hole. As I have said many times the staff here is always friendly and I can’t say enough about them. The city of Garland needs to put more money into this great course. It needs more well paid grounds crew and more TLC.
Pleasant Round at Firewheel
Staff was very friendly. Played a round at the Old Course with a couple guys they paired me with, who were clearly better than I was. The course was wide open with very few hazards. There were just some bad shots on my part. Went in the middle of the week around noon so it wasn't too crowded. The shape of the course was pretty good. No complaints here. I will definitely be back!
Good condition in this Texas heat
All of the courses at firewheel are in solid shape. Fun muni course and the pace of play has was great. Greens were in good shape and played a little slow you could be a little aggressive putting. . Recommend all of the courses at firewheel. Also. staff is on point.
Great Day to Chase the White Ball
Ok so it was HOT…but that has nothing to do with the course at all…in fact, I was very surprised the greens were in such good shape considering the heat wave we have had for about 2-3 weeks. I forgot how short the course can be from the white tee box, but the smaller greens make it very challenging when you hit your approach shot…and while I don’t like the sand…there was actually “sand” in the bunkers and it was a playable shot…most courses have just about given up on keeping sand in the bunkers these days…anyway, okay this course and you will enjoy the round. Did I mention it was HOT?!?
Amazing for the value
Can’t go wrong with this course. Great price! Amazing course!
Good course but the range needs help
I have played the old course for a long time and many years ago it was the neglected course out of the three at the firewheel complex. The staff has done a great job getting the course into shape. I prefer the old course over the lakes. The city of Garland needs to put money into the building and the range. The range needs to be over seeded and allowed to heal. Maybe the city could put down mats while the grass comes back. All that being said the staff at this course has always been great and the city should give them a raise.
Excellent condition
The course was in excellent condition. And everybody was very professional we're always willing to help
Oldie but goodie
I’m not gonna lie and tell you it was the best ever but it was in better shape than I remember and a fun layout. First off I had not played here in almost 10 years. My buddy wanted to play last minute and so we gave it a shot. They need new carts and the clubhouse needs an update. That is standard though for a course this age. The layout is challenging, especially if you have never played there. Fairways are tight and you will like find yourself punching out a lot. Course is not super long, so you could play and never have to hit a driver. Greens are in the smaller side but they rolled true. For $45 on an early Sunday morning it is a deal compared to some other courses I’ve played recently. The man rule with most golf is don’t take yourself too seriously and have fun. If you do that you will enjoy your round at the Old Course.
Disappointed
When I arrived I was told that I could only get a riding cart 10 minutes prior to tee time. Not sure why and definitely indicated a problem with cart management but okay. So I went down 8 minutes prior to my tee time at 1:25 and there were absolutely NO carts, nor was there anyone down there to ask about a cart. I went upstairs to let them know and was told that there were carts and there was someone down there to help me. He told me (rudely) that in the time I had taken to come up and complain I could have already gotten my cart. I went back down and still no carts or about to ask.
I finally chased down someone just coming in at the far end of the garage and he had only one cart available which had not yet been cleaned out from the previous golfers. I arrived right at my tee time but, without persistence, would have found myself walking that day.
Instead of calling it FireWheel, they should call it FireAnts. You have to be very watchful because there are so many fire ant hills on the course. Really, they're everywhere and out of control.
I didn't pay a lot of money to play, but I still don't feel I got my money's worth and the rudeness in the pro shop really put me off. Doubt I will play there again.
Fun course
First time to play there, was a fun and challenging course, will defitelyvplsy there agsin
