Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

It’s ok
The course was ok and needs lots of work! I feel of the 3 Firewheel courses this gets the least amount of attention which is sad because it’s a great layout.
Foggy Day
It was foggy most of the day. The greens are starting to fill in from all the repairs of last year but they rolled pretty true and are better (by far) than they were a month ago. Fairway and tee grass is brown (typical), tee boxes have softened up (nice!), fairways are still quite firm and bouncy...Not many leaves to contend with and the round took 3:55, so a decent pace of play. Thought it played fair, was good value and easy to get the round in before dark (tee time was at 1pm).
Great day on the course
We had a great day at Firewheel. The weather was absolutely wonderful and the pace of play was good (4hrs for 18).
Several of the tee boxes and some areas of some greens need work but they really did not detract for our enjoyment.
Classic course design
Had not played the olde course in several years. Played with my son a +1 handicap to my +9. Found the course in good shape. Fairways were dormie, brown and firm .(played winter rules) ...tees and greens were in good shape. Greens rolled true and well. We enjoyed the round. Great value for $36.
Old Couse Firewheel
The course is in good shape. The greens are still hampered by the cold winter, however, there are other courses that have similar green issues.
Old Course Firewheel
It is nice to see that Garland is taking care of the Old Course once again. It is a nice layout, and the fairways and greens are in good shape. I will play this course again.
Old course feels OLD
I played Firewheel last weekend and the difference between the Bridges and the Old course are significant. It really feels like the Old course has not been maintained nearly as well. For the price it’s not too bad but I’ll try to stay at the other courses for sure.
very slow play.
In 4 and half hours had to quit on 13 dued to darkness. Two groups of 4 in front playing extremely slow and refused to let anyone pass. No Marshalls on course. 5 or 6 greens still beat up from the weather and fairways are hard and grass packed down. Great layout but course needs care. For the same price, play the Lakes course, much better condition.
Fall golf
Considering leaves were everywhere which is expected for this time of year, the course was in great shape. Some of the greens were a little bumpy but nothing to be overly concerned about. Pace of play was good considering they had two walking groups ahead of us. Still played and under 3 & 1/2 hrs
