Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

First time play
Enjoyed the course very much, was my first time there and I really enjoyed it. Challenging but fun to play. Will definitely play again.
FireWheel - Old Course, 5-8-22
First time I've played this course. Greens were in pretty good shape, a few rough spots, but overall very good and true, but slow putting.
Fairways were recovering from dormancy of winter and could use some seed and attention, but overall, not too bad.
Course plays fair, and is not tricked up. Some traps have obviously been removed to speed up pace, but does not affect the overall experience or enjoyment of the round.
A nice public course, above average layout for a muni. Could use a bit more maintenance, but what muni coudn't? Well worth the fee. a good round of golf and a fair challenge. You'll use most clubs in your bag.
Course was in great condition. Will definitely be back to try the other courses.
Good to be out at Old Course
Come to FireWheel about once a month or so to take advantage of the uphill and downhill slopes where playing the good roll can come into strategy when getting out of tight spots. The elevated greens are challenging and were rolling smooth. Drive able fairways.
back nine is the best, with the lake, and I think 16, 17, 18 are great closing holes.
Greens and Fairways
I might be middle of the pack golfer but I’m very aware that course maintenance is very expensive so I definitely take that into account when playing a city course. That being said it’s a lot more expensive to replace entire green complexes and fairways. I think the City of Garland would be wise to invest in the upkeep of this course before they are faced with a big budget decision.
That being said I would still recommend this course or any other out there.
Very playable course
Great course layout. Offers challenges with some protected greens, as well as for errant hits off the fairway but very playable.

This golf course is very well taken care of. Staff is very helpful and it was a nice day to play. I'll be back soon.
