Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Just Don’t Care
Used to be a good course for the money but tee boxes were just mud, bunker with no sand, lots of drainage issue and it hasn’t rained much lately. Greens ridiculously slow and bumpy for N Tx.
bad mother's day surprise and extremely hard fairway ground
First of all, I was shocked that the staff would not even allow my wife to ride with me (on a Mother's Day) unless she pays a ride fee. The attitude was really troublesome especially when other golf courses in the area kindly offered mothers a free round of golf for Mother's Day (with a paid playing partner). The second surprise came when I hit the second shot from the fairway. The ground was so hard and dry that it could easily cause wrist injuries. Even the ground on tee boxes was incredibly hard. I broke a tee on one of the tee boxes because of that. Overall poor and disappointing experience.
Old Course at Firewheel
Glad to see the course starting to green-up. Sand traps are like hitting off the cart path. Ground was hard where there wasn't any grass.
Should get better with a lot of watering.
Grreat Value/Greens Need Improvement
The cost to play was a great value compared to other nearby courses. The greens were inconsistent with speed of putts and holding approach shots. Fairways were in great shape.
USed To Be A Great Course
I’ve been playing Firewheel for over 25 years and this was the worst condition I’ve ever seen it in. Bunkers completely washed out and not maintained, tee boxes basically dirt and given up on, greens were barely maintained, (several had evidence of insect infestation) and the fairways appear to have stop being watered. I agree with the other review that The Old Course has become the unwanted step child of the unwanted step child of the Lakes and Bridges. It’s really too bad, when maintained, this is a fun and challenging course to pay. It appears the City Of Garland has given up on maintaining this course, probably selling to a single family home developer sometime soon.
Concrete Bunkers!
This is a good course when it is kept up. The old course seems to be the step child of the Firewheel family. The bunkers dont have sand they have hard packed dirt that will do nothing but scar up your club. Many of them still have water in them. The other two courses Lakes and Bridges have great sand but the old course has been ignored.
Great course
The course is in the best shape I’ve seen in a while. Tee boxes being aerated though
Bare-ly Playable
Grass on the fairways is maintained so close to the dirt that there are no good lies. Oddly, grass on the greens is too long making putts frustrating due to the lack of "rollout." I have played this course for over 20 years. The layout is a classic WYSIWYG. No gimmicks. Just golf. Hit the drive. Hit the approach. Make the putts. But close cropped lies in the fairways and shaggy greens change the physics of the game. Watering and regular maintenance would change all this.
You get what you pay for
Overall you can't be the $20 cost to play if you book through Golf Now. The course and greens are a little rough, the fairways are mostly made up of hard pan and the putting greens are growing in various types of grasses which makes putting fun and challenging.
Looking better
Had a great time. Played with 2 singles and got to meet good folks. Course is a little bare in some spots but is really starting to green up.
Excellent greens, poor fairways
Thought the layout was nice, fair. Greens rolled very well, however the fairways could use some work. Also sand traps were gravel, not sand.
Very friendly staff.
Firewheel Old Course
The Old Course is in decent spring shape. Of the three Firewheel courses this one is the easiest. The greens are in good shape. A few of the bunkers need some attention but not that they are un-playable. I would play this course again

Mystic Creek Experience Stay & Play Package
All 4 players I played with reported that ALL the sand traps were hard pan and filled with more dirt than sand. The "bounce" on the bottom of a sand wedge is NOT supposed to bounce. It is supposed to guide the shot.
