Old at Firewheel Golf Park

This is a course that I play on a regular basis and I have always felt like it is the one that is neglected. The Lakes course always has good sand and is well maintained and the 27 hole Bridges course down the street is the pride and joy of the Firewheel courses. That being said the staff has finally put good sand into the old course bunkers and it makes it playable for all levels. The bunkers use to be rock hard clay soil filled with rocks but not anymore. The city of Garland finally gave this course some money and they were able to get real sand in them.

The old course is perfect if you just want to get out and play and not worry about the conditions of the course. The pace of play is hit and miss and the same can be said about the pace of play and course conditions.

I have played this course since its opening back in the early 80 and have fond memories. This day however was a mixed bag. Winter in Texas is not easy on courses, but the conditions were sad. Many fairways had almost no grass, The greens rolled strangely. And the construction throughout the course was awkward. I always liked the layout, but hopefully Garland can find some funds to help get this course back in respectable shape.

I’ve played this course several times & today the course was expectedly affected by the weather, but it was surprisingly in decent shape considering the circumstances. The pace was the only negative, as a group of 4 ahead of us were in no hurry to play their holes or allow us to pass. Other than that, Firewheel - Old Course was “par for the course”!

Played this course after a recent rain with temps in the low 40s. Despite it being cold & wet, the course played as great as it could. Would definitely play it again.

Every staff member we encountered was top notch. After enjoying the day, I returned to my vehicle to find out my battery was dead. One of the grounds crew members had jumper cables in his personal truck and came to the rescue. I tried to give him a tip for his time but he refused. I will definitely go back.

Got behind a six some on #12... took 45 min to play 12 and 13. Just skipped 14.... played last 4 holes in less than hour because there was no one on those holes.

Got rained out and do not get back GolfNow desposit so it wasn’t good.

I normally don’t like playing this course because the clubhouse staff is not helpful however the young lady today was a delightful surprise. I will try this place again in the near future hopefully she’ll rub off on the rest of them

I have played this course many many times over the last four years and the constant complaint was that the bunkers are either flooded or they are as hard as concrete. Last Sunday I was out there and much to my surprise there were huge piles of sand in the parking lot and I was told that all the bunkers on the old course will be dug up a drain system put in and then fresh sand put back into the traps.

The Olde course is now more fun for playing a relaxing round because tee and approach shots are much less demanding since they pruned back some of the trees that made tee and approach shots narrow. It is now a basic “olde” time WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) layout. The rolling greens are demand formidable putting skills to get your par now that you can hit the green in regulation.

Firewheel still has a huge issue that has been there since I first played it 20 years ago. A local crowd of “good olde boys” schedule blocks of adjacent tee times to play multi-group matches that slow down play. For example, on Thursday August 21, our tee time was right behind such a group. Our twosome sat patiently behind them on every tee box and in every fairway knowing the last group would not let us through since they wanted to be together. I am OK with that.

At the turn, the front group delayed teeing off, so they could compare scores and bet outcomes. I am OK with that.

But the front group was now at least 3 holes behind – you can see 10, 11 and 12 for threw 10 tee – and they did not eve offer to let us go through. So, we went to the 16 tee nearby and played 16, 17 and 18 and came back to 10. The lead group was now in the middle of 11 fairway. We had played 3 holes to their 1 ½.

The foursome on 10 tee told us they had been told to do the same thing by another group that was also being held up and they did.

We joined up with another twosome and played 10 an 11 before we caught up with the herd on 12 box. Yep, our foursome played two holes while they played one.

The math said it would take us twice as long to play 12, 13, 14, and 15 behind these groups which would put our round at OVER 5 hours. So, we left.

Course management knows about all of this and lets it go on anyway. They booked the tee times. There was no marshal. They could observe firsthand from the windows how long it took then to get to 9. The could see the hold up on 10 box.

It always is a hit or miss on this course for conditions of the greens. They were slow and uneven in my round. I expected dry and hard fairways and was not disappointed. The conditions do keep the price and crowds down. We played in under 3 hrs.

Course was in great shape!! Greens were very consistent. Course layout makes you think about your play & not just bomb driver on every hole.

Overall course was in good shape. All sand traps are terrible and basically unplayable. Greens are slow and staff was not very friendly. Course was very crowded but pace of play was good.
