Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

This course is in horrible condition
This is the first time I have played this course this year. Last year it was in good shape but it has become incredibly poor. The tee boxes were sandy and hard. I use plastic tees and snapped most of them because the ground was so hard. The greens and bunkers were in equally poor shape. I can't understand how the course got this bad.
Great Value
The experience at this golf course was great. The weather was perfect. For being in March, the course was in great shape. The only issue was the sand traps need lots of work to improve the hazard and make it possible to play out of them. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Value for the price
I wouldn't pay more than 20 for a round here - very average course but better than nothing for a Saturday morning..fairways was little more than light grass with hard dirt underneath at this time of year..for the price point it is a good value.
OK for early spring
Tee boxes in poor shape. Course needs water. But to be expected this early in the year.
Just ok
Fairways are bare. Tee boxes are also bare. Greens were very slow
Not bad for the rate...
Got a 17 dollar round in on a Saturday, so I can’t complain too much. I will say, greens were in nice shape. Fairways and bunkers were in need of repair. But as I said, good for the rate.
Stiff
Nice time playing hooky course okay grass hasn’t come in yet, tbox are concrete, greens patchy busy for a Monday 11am start
Probably not again
This was our first time here. The price was good from golf now, but with many other options, we will probably not play here again. The tee boxes were like concrete, could barely get tee in the ground. Many areas of course were like hitting off pavement. The sand traps were unplayable, but potentially due to rain deterioration, again like cement. The fairways were narrow which lead to many other golfers playing on your fairway from errant shots. Pace of play was good on the first 9, but then backed up quite a bit requiring waiting for each shot. The green has lots of weeds and the black tee box on the 11th hole had grass 2-3 inches high.
Not Yet Spring ready
I enjoy playing this course. The greens are good and are fast. The fairways do not have a lot of grass which is similar to a lot of the area courses. The bunkers were wet and need attention and sand added. A nice layout. It was priced right at the GolfNow Hot Deal rate.
A Gem
The olde course at Firewheel is a hidden gem that all players of all abilities can enjoy. The former venue for the PGA Tour school and multiple Texas State Opens in the 90's, the wheel is a course everyone in DFW should play.
Good course, bad drainage
Played the course a few days after it rained and it did not drain well. Still early spring but maintenance could be better. They shouldn't have rebar in front of a sand trap! Cant understand why it was there. Greens need alit of work. Very beat up. But for 20 bucks it was a good practice round.
Great features
We played after a week of rain. Can’t wait to play it again under better conditions.
Ok for winter golf
The course was fairly well maintained during the winter. Greens were in fairly good shape. Bunkers had very little sand on some holes. I enjoy this course, but did not enjoy the day-25 mph winds with higher gusts. This is a good value venue along with the Lakes.
Golf course was Closed
I went to golf course but golf course was closed due to freeze.
Many people were same situation as me.
Golf course should announce in advance.
.Quit due to the weather
The weather turned into horrible (wind:gust 45mi/hr, temperature: went down to lower thirties) so we had to give up at 11th. I wasn't sure I can cancel the tee time for this kind of reason.
I'll check the weather really tight next time before decide to buy the tee time.
This Course is a challenge.
We played on a day when the wind was blowing and it was cold and slight drizzle. However, the course was in great shape for this time of year and the greens were excellent and rolled pure. Our foursome played in 3.5 hours and was never in a hurry or was hurried. Staff is always great and friendly. I will be back to play again.
