Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Great layout with good conditions.
Course has a very good layout and the course was in very good shape with the exception of the tee boxes. This is a pet peeve but the tee boxes were extremely uneven and always had to drive with the ball above or below your feet. Would play the course again but please level out the tee boxes.
Course conditions were superb
I played the Champions and Masters @ Firewheel and I must say that the fairways, greens, and sand traps are in great shape. The staff was amazing...thanks Don Kennedy(head of staff) for inviting me out to play the Briges @ Firewheel.
good course and great value
Good layout. Greens are in good shape and well maintained. The only thing that needs attention or drawback is some of the tee boxes are bare.
Don't Play the Old Course
Firewhweel has always been a great value. However, the old course needs serious work as many of the bunkers and greens were under unfinished repairs, the rough was overgrown so much that if the ball just barely ran in you couldn't find it.
The bridges course is in great shape and always a fun challenge that demands you work the ball left and right off the tee.
Old Course
Original course with very good fairways and soft greens. Almost impossible to find your ball in the rough! Plays best from the fairway!
Enjoyed the day
Played with my son-in-law, paired up with another twosome. Course in great shape, but rough is thick (easy to lose balls) and sand traps are hard packed. Overall a great day.
Give it a c+
Greens were okay but patchy. Fairways generous but need TLC. Rough was mostly consistant. Pretty good experience overall , but a lot of shabbiness around entire course; tee boxes, cart paths, etc... probably due to lack of management follow-up on work performed by greens crews.sorry but it's true!
Thick Rough!!!
The course in general is in great shape....fairways...greens....tee boxes (some a little spotty-no big deal) The fairway rough and the extended areas around the greens are grossly overgrown...not sure why it is like this...any balls just off the fairway or greens were very hard to locate....this slowed the pace of play down greatly because of each group...ahead...behind...our group...looking for their ball...that's the only complaint...otherwise, a nice day at the course....will continue to play.
Very Nice Layout with good use of bunkering
Course was in great shape. However, secondary rough was ridiculously challenging. Thought I was playing St. Andrews, that is if you could find your ball. They need to mow down the secondary rough for speed of play and allow average golfers a chance to get their ball out. Overall, the course was in very nice shape! On the particular day that I am writing this review, Driving range was Irons Only. Golf course staff should let you know that before selling range tokens.
Rough is Tough
This would have been a great day of golf if I had not spent hours and two sleeves of balls in a rough that made the U.S. Open seem easy. If you happened to miss a fairway by even a few inches your ball would be gone forever and I did not want to hold up the group behind us, but they were looking for their shots all day, as was every group. They need to get a mower, or weed eater or machete and trim it up a tad. I don't mind rough and I have been in plenty - but I felt I was back in Nam. Bring extra balls - no Pro V's unless you are rich.
18 Holes at Firewheel Old Course
Played 18 holes on July 4 at the Firewheel Old course. Greens and fairway are in very good condition. The rough - especially on the front 9 - was rather ridiculous. 4-6" high grass made it nearly impossible to find balls that were even just a few feet off the fairway. That was frustrating since it really slowed down the pace of play. Also, there was a 4-some of young men playing in front of us (a 2 some) at a glacier's pace and it never occurred to them to let us play through. After 4 holes we finally asked them to let us through and we never saw them the rest of the round. Marshalls need to be monitoring groups like this to make sure pace of play is better.
Too much thick rough for a muni
Some of the lawn mowing guys must have quit. The fairways were cut ok but when I bounce a high approach shot off the back of a green, I should be able to find my ball. The grass was 8" in all areas outside the greens and fairways.
Great shape
Best fairways ever since I've been playing here, about 10-15 years. Greens are in good shape as well.
Green Fairways
Course is in great shape
Putting green is in great shape
Greens are rolling good
Driving range is awful
New range will be much better - hope it opens soon !!
Old Firewheel
The course was in excellent shape. The rough was a little high due to all the rain, but this course is always fun to play.
On fire!
Not only did this course exceed my expectations it was hands down one of my favorite courses in the Dallas metroplex. Played this course once and fell in love with it. Would recommend to all. Can't wait to return!
great condition
Had not played the course in a few years.I was very impressed with the condition of course, the fairways were great and the greens were even better
Firewheel Bridges
The greens and fairways are excellent. Pace of play was actually pretty good for a Father's Day weekend.
