Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Not good
I've played this course for many years and I'm sad to say that this is the worst condition I've ever seen it in. It looks like they're preparing to do a lot of work to the course, but right now it's almost unplayable.
The rough looks like it hasnt been mowed in weeks. People in my group lost multiple balls just in the rough. There are no yardage markers anywhere on the course outside of the 100,150 & 200 markers. Some of the greens are so bad that we had to move our putts to the other side of the green so that we would have a chance. Even the decent greens are rolling so slow it's tough to make any putts.
There was no cart service whatsoever (on a Sunday!). The scorecards were photocopies. Don't even get me started on the driving range. It's the worst I've ever seen. I can't believe they even charge you for the range balls.
The course is fun for all levels
The course was a little too dry which made everything fast. It was a great course to play for both the experienced and beginner golfer.
Good value
The course was in good condition. Although the course was considered the "old" course, I liked the layout. There were several dog legs and water strategically placed in several areas. Tee to green was very good. The grass was well manicured in the fairways and there was not very high grass in the rough. In most cases, the holes were very forgiving if you were a little off line. I have a range finder and it did not work as well as other courses. I think it had to do with the fact that there were no reflectors on the pins. Not sure if that was why but it may be. Overall, a fine experience.
No redeeming factors
This was my third time playing this course, and all I can say is that the course gets progressively worse. Every green was patchy, and the fairways were hard and full of mud clumps. The man behind the front counter made it seem like I was doing him a favor by playing there. He refused to let me tee off early, even though I was a single and there were multiple large groups about to tee off. When I went to warm up, there were no buckets by the ball machine, and it was 8:30 in the morning. It then took me 2 and a half hours to get through the front nine with no marshall in sight. I left after the front nine, having my weekly golf outing ruined. I would have been more disappointed had my green fees not been discounted. Next time I'm willing to go to a busy course, I'll choose elsewhere. There are many better courses in the area with better staff, better course conditions and better prices.
Fair but could be better....
I can say over all the course plays well, but I guess they need to work on maintaining the course over all.. Tee boxes need a lot of work the greens, and some fair ways specially..
Over hyped
I didn't think the course was as great as advertised. It was not in the best shape but the greens were ok. Not bad if you get a good price.
No so great...
I know there is a drought here in Texas but come on. I have played plenty of courses in better shape. The fairways were hard as a rock with quite a few dirt patches and greens were fried.
Poor Conditions
This course had high hopes as I have played others in the Firewheel family before. However, I would not pay what we paid for again to play this course with the condition it is. It was like 18 holes of concrete. The tee boxes had massive divets and it was uneven to tee off. once on the fairway you could see dust fly up when the ball hit the fairway. hard as a rock it was. The sand traps or lack there of were a joke. they were so hard and compact that there was barely a foot print if you walked in them. The greens were the worst I have played on. not kept up, tire tracks and sand on the greens nowhere the traps. All in all I should have asked for my money back.
Poor course conditions, but good value for a Hot Deal
I used to play this course a lot 15 years ago, but I've seen it decline in terms of course conditions, most dramatically over the past 3-5 years.
Lots of bare spots in the fairway and on the greens. Some of the holes look as if they've made an attempt to improve them, but others looked like all they've done was mow for the past 5 years.
But for the $18 Hot Deal rate with cart, I don't think I'd play here again, unless it improves.
grass needed help
It was ok, grass was not in good shape. I enjoyed playing the course but was hitting off dirt a few times. I like the area and overall layout
The Old
Fun little course, a great course to get your game In gear, not to tough, but good enough.
Haggard greens and poor pin placement
The layout of this course is nice, but it's condition of greens and bunkers are rough.
Bunkers are hard as cement, like trying to chip from a clay baseball field in August.
The greens are brown, with lots of rough patches that will bounce the ball off the lie. Plus pin placement was I'll advised on 18, 15, and 3 especially.
Battling the wind
We knew the wind (at least 3 clubs) was going to be extremely challenging, but decided to give it a go anyway. The greens were difficult but fair. I will play here again.
No Complaints
Having played Firewheel a few times now I have come to expect a few things...
1. I normally find a good deal online.
2. The course is always in decent shape.
3. Normally somewhat busy.
4. I never leave disappointed.
The only real complaint I have with the course is the layout of the 5th and 9th fairways right on top of each other. Expect a number of people playing in the wrong fairways.
Good golf in bad weather
It was really cold and wet, but the course was still really playable. The fairways were good and the greens in great shape. Can't wait to play this course in March.
Old Course at Firewheel
The course was in good shape for winter conditions. The course is kept up well.
awesome course
Played here before and enjoyed myself this last summer. Tried it out during again later in January and had extremely good time. Greens were in perfect condition to stick shots and roll putts. I had 10 one putts for my round, which for me is quite good. Really enjoyed it even though it was cold and looking forward to going there again.
Nice course for a Great Price!
We played the Champions and the Traditions course. We were a twosome on a course full of foursomes, but rarely did we have to wait on the tee box. I wish we could have played the Masters instead of the Traditions Course, but we only paid $27 for the round so we didn't complain.
Well maintained course. Affordable using GolfNow.
Play average once a week with my sons. Like firewheel courses because they have several listings with golfnow which allow us the possibility to play at affordable rates. Weekdays not crowded. A few traps can be improved with additional drainage.
Would be good without the group in front of us.
There were two of us behind a foursome. We waited on them all day and it was very slow. Finally on the 14th hole we just drove around them and played the last four without seeing a single other person. We had fun the course was in good shape for a city course. We got a sandwich on the turn trying to space the group in front of us farther ahead and the staff at the grill did such a great job the golfers were still in the fairway by the time we got back in our cart. Overall good course for the money. Watch out for people that think they are PGA golfers laying down on greens to read every 60 foot putt.
