Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Firewheel - Old Course
I like the course very much; there's not much water to get over. My husband says the greens are slow, but I thought they were fine. The bunkers are not well kept; hard sand and some had standing water. There's a good amount of shade if you need it. We'll be back..
Revisiting the Old Course at Firewheel
It had been over 15 years since I had played at Firewheel. I liked the Old Course layout and decided to book a tee time there. The two nines were swapped. The fairways had grass that was pretty sparse and the bunkers were unplayable. It looked like the course had been flooded recently but not work had been done on the bunkers at all. They looked like horses had been walking thru them. The tees were in poor shape, the greens were the best part of the course. It looked to me like they had basically given up on spending any money at the Old Course. I was very disappointed in what the Old course had become.
Great Track, but slow
I played fairly quick around the first 9, but then eventually caught up to the group who had 2 beginners playing. While it was slow and had to wait on pretty much every hole while the collected golf balls from the surrounding creeks, I did play well and had nothing else to be doing, so I'm not going to complain. I would advise keeping the beginners to the driving range and have them start their round at 5 p.m. or so.
I feel the Lakes course is in much better condition, but it was a nice change for the day.
Fun course for good value
The Old Course is a fun course, that has a great set up, for a cheap price. The course is in pretty good shape. The fairways and rough are in great shape. The fringe is nice and the greens are adequate. Some greens are a little dried up but nothing bad. Overall it's a great course!
Always a good play
The course is pretty easy, but always short of being in good condition. Bunkers need work, greens are hit or miss on condition, some tee boxes have trouble growing grass. But for the money it's a great play especially if you live nearby.
Great course for entertainment
I golfed with friends and had so wonderful time including restaurant in the club.
I scored the best at old course with 73 that made me happier(73 stroke at blue tee).
Please open the other 2 courses on the website for better selections next time.
Then, I'd be lovely enjoying continually in the future.
Thank you
Good layout
Played the old course. Greens in good shape but have inconsistent speeds on a few but was able to finish at 70. A great layout. Pace of play could be better.
Fun Time
The course is very well designed. We enjoyed the driving range. I would definitely play this course again.
great value for the money
The course was in very good shape - a little standing water in the middle of the 16th fairway, and one green that had dirt/rough patches. Fairways gave a lot of generous bounces & roll. Not a lot of sand in the bunkers, like hitting out of a fairway trap, but easy to get out of trouble.
Pace of play was very good - 4 hour round, 2 hours a side. We only waited on one hole and were never pushed by the group behind us.
No cart girl on the course on a Friday afternoon. We were glad we asked the guys in the pro shop in advance. Beer & food prices were very reasonable.
Will definitely play here again!
Fun Course
Played this course for the first time and was very enjoyable and challenging. Now that I know the layout will play again in the near future.
Easy Does It
Although not as difficult as The Lakes course, The Old can still jump up and ruin a duffer's day. On the front nine, I think the 5th hole is the most deceiving. Don't try to hit a draw. Hitting a relatively straight drive just over the right side of the trees at the left side of the dog leg will serve you well. On the back side, my least favorite hole is the par 4, fifth hole. It just doesn't fit my fade well. And , when I try to go over the bunkers, I'm usually in one of them. Otherwise, today, greens were hard and extremely grainy. So, if it doesn't change, don't go at the pins. The ball will not stay on the green. Fairways were in pretty good shape.
Lot's of hills for this part of Texas.
Enjoyed the round. The fairways were not fully recovered from the winter. The greens were in great shape and very readable. Number 9 hole is a bear that requires several straight shots.
great layout
awesome .....yeah the grass hasn't really come out yet....it will. For the money, best deal around. greens are really good.
Classic golf experience
You can see the old beauty of this classic track. It's always a pleasure with several well designed holes and some good challenges. The staff is always friendly. The worst part is the level of etiquette. One would think a late morning round on a Tuesday should be an quick endeavor. Just like other courses in the area, the amateur golfer has no regard for pace of play and the course had no one checking the pace. It's growing tiresome to go play public links anymore. Someone please post USGA stroke limits for non-handicap players!
One of the worst golf course
I think that grass is just earth or rough.
I never played the golf at this course.
