The original Squaw Valley course, Apache Links, opened in 1992–a Jeff Brauer design that is open on the front and more densely wooded on the back. Brauer’s work involved bringing in dirt to provide some mounding to the flat terrain, and he placed the course along a scenic creek that comes into play, mostly on the back.

No. 9 is the best hole on the front because of its split fairway. Macho men can go for the green by aiming over the lake–otherwise it plays a pedestrian 362 yards if you choose the left side, where it doglegs around the lake.

On the back, Nos. 15 and 16 are back-to-back par 4s that you’ll be glad to get out of the way. The 15th rolls 462 yards and doglegs right, requiring a tee shot over the creek. The long approach is especially challenging due to the long row of trees at the corner of the green. Hole 16 features an elevated green above Squaw Creek. Play for position off the tee because the hole is not long.

Good, not great

Squaw Valley is perennially listed on many “best Texas public courses “ lists. It’s certainly a “best of” in the area, but not quite up to a “best in state” level. Too many holes are treeless, windswept, rather plain layouts. IMHO, the sister “Comanche Lake” is a much better track.

The Hidden Gem of Texas

For my money both courses at squaw valley are some of the best in Texas. The condition is always in top notch, followed by a great layout. If you haven’t played here you are definitely missing out.

A hidden gem near DFW

I had heard about this course for years but had never taken the time to make the hike. On a Saturday I was able to play a round (as a single) in 2 1/2 hours which is amazing. Course is challenging and you will use every club in your bag. Great overall conditions even though it is winter. Remember to bring water as there are no coolers on the course (although staff offered to bring out food/beverages any time.) I look forward to returning when the grass isnt dormant. For the money one of the best values in DFW.

Perfect

The sun was shining, the wind was light, the dormant Bermuda mowed, the greens were fast and frustrating, but the entire event was spectacular.

Always great

Both courses are great. Staff is always great. The bad: lack of drinking water on course. Have never played a course, especially in Texas that did not provide water. That is bordering on dangerous, especially in summer.

There should be other ways to save money! Otherwise, love to play here.

Great Golf

My friend and I played on a Friday and Saturday. Friday's weather was good but Saturday's was perfect. We come to town a couple of times per year. We love playing both courses at Squaw Valley.

great course

third time playing it and still enjoyed it. You can score on it and it can occasionally get you. Both 18's are fun and greens were in terrific shape. Used almost every club in the bag from the Blue tees

Excellent condition,

Beautifully well maintained course. It’s a pleasure to play. The only downside is that 5 balls are allowed which slows down play considerably. We were a 4 ball playing off the Seniors & Ladies tees, consequently we play fast: faster due to the fact it was cold and wet yesterday.

We actually missed out 2 holes due to two 5 balls in front, went to the 10th, then were reprimanded for doing it. However, the 3 ball we jumped in front of were 2 or 3 holes behind when we were on the 18th.

I would have given 5* all the way had it not been for 5 balls playing: nowhere in the R&A rule book are 5 balls mentioned- it is just a way for courses to get more money.
