Call ahead
Went in with 9:00 o clock set up on Golfnow and they basically said they don’t use it and you have to “wait till a spot is open” after your tee time if you want to play. Would definitely call ahead but not a bad short course for the money .
Affordable Golf in the Outer Banks
I spent a week in the Outer Banks and wanted to play a few rounds of golf. We stayed in a cottage near the Wright Brothers Memorial, so I googled several local courses. Most were $60 to $90 per round, but Holly Ridge GC in Harbinger was only $49 with a cart, $37 to walk. The reviews were not appealing, but I gave it a shot.
I walked and thoroughly enjoyed the course layout, good greens, and the friendliness of the pro shop staff. The fairways were rough in spots, but very playable. I get very appreciated and with the walking deal, I opted to play 2 more times that week. With a relatively flat layout, the course was very walkable.
The course isn’t very long , 5500 yards from the tips, but several holes were challenging with water hazards on a number of holes.
I will certainly go back when I’m in that area again.
Friendly and Quaint
Really good bang for the buck course! All the others I played throughout the week were packed, so this was a very welcome change of pace. We were able to hang out and golf, without feeling rushed, and for the price it was perfect! The staff was very friendly. Thanks to everyone at Holly Ridge!
Good course for first time playing
This was a good course; everything dormant; not great fairway grass. Putting was okay. Lots of water! Didn't like the power-lines running through several holes.
A Course to Check in on Again
This course was a welcome surprise for me. While there is still a lot of improvements I would like to see come to the course, I was left with a positive experience. The staff was friendly, the price fair, and the experience pleasant for someone who doesn't play a lot of golf. After several rough years, I was pleasantly surprised by how the greens have improved over the past couple of years. While I would love to see the greens a little greener, and the entire course to be in a bit better shape, I would recommend the course for anyone who is looking for a good time.
pleasantly surprised
have played here before as it is cheap place to play when vacationing at OBX. looks like they have spent some money to fix it up. biggest change was they have a lighted driving range, with targets and distance flags. open late, i was there at 10 pm. greens looked better, looks like they added bunkers and refurbed existing ones. i have always thought it is a fun layout, some easy holes and some tough ones. play there every time we vacation there.
Having not played here in awhile, was pleasantly pleased at the improvements. Still great staff and value.
Very challenging short course
This golf course is greatly improved after a few years of neglect. New management is investing in greens, new bunkers and lots of other improvements. Course conditions are getting better all the time. This is a good value and will challenge all golfers regardless of ability. I highly recommend it. Don’t expect flawless turf right now. Play the ball down and you will face a great test. If you can score anywhere around par, you have really done something special. How many 5500 yard courses can you say that about? I would bet any single digit handicapper that they can’t break 80 their first time playing this course.
Horrible Overall Golf Experiences
I played with my 9 year old son, the course is complete and utter trash, the greens are bumpy and more rough than Velcro, the fairways are very unfair, the rough is just dirt, the T box is just crabgrass, overall just a trash golf course.
Poorly maintained.
If you are looking for a cheap course to just have a few beers and smack some balls around, this one is not as bad as some of the reviews read...... Friendly staff, not crowded, affordable, and a descent layout.
Hopefully a new owner will purchase this course in the near future and re-seed the tee boxes, fairways, and greens...... really not that bad of a course overall, just horribly maintained.
Budget golf in OBX
Fine for family outing or some practice. Bunkers need some work. Bermuda greens are pretty slow with not much undulation. Get what you pay for and this is the cheapest place to play in OBX by at least 50%.
Terrible Course
This course is bad shape. The worst course that I have played on in 6 yrs. Don't play the full price to play on this crs. Due to the condition of the course, it should be closed and redone.
Not Worth the $10.00
Course is pitiful; especially front nine. It is not worth even the $10.00 special
Don't waste your money
Have played better 10 dollar Pasture fields in north west PA. Just weeds and sand and burned out greens, no restroom on course and the one at the club house was in poor condition (needed cleaning).
Dog track
This course is in horrible condition and is obviously not taken care of properly. For the price, during peak season, you'd expect better conditions. The fairways hadn't been mowed in ages. I've never played a course where you hit the fairway and still cabs find your ball because the grass is so tall! That happened about 7-8 times during my round. I'd advise paying a little extra and playing a different course that is well kept!
Waste of Time!
I booked this course after I read some initial reviews and it was close to where we were staying.
For the $69.00 green fees this course is a joke! They should be at a $10.00 to $15.00 dollar range.
The greens were a combination of regular grass and clover. What they called their sand traps was a combination of dirt and they looked like they had never been maintained. Though they were cutting the fairways on the morning that we played the grass hadn't been cut in weeks.
Bottom line.......don't waste your time at this course!
Not your typical course
We played on a hot deal, 10 bucks, I would play it again for 10 bucks, never full price, I don't think they have a water system, cause it was pretty dried up, very tiny greens, that reminded me of out door carpeting, nice carts, some of the cart paths are concrete, can't figure out why they put the money in the paths instead of the course? Never played a golf course that the 18th hole did not finish at the club house. Very nice staff.
VERY BAD!
Spending $60 per person to play this course was outrageous. Greens haven't been cut or rolled in weeks it seemed. Fairways have maybe 30% grass. The rest is sand and weeds. Tee boxes were in very poor shape. Multiple groups over 4 people which slowed things way down. I reached almost every par 4 in one shot which shouldn't happen. Next time I come back to OBX I will spend the extra $30 and play a nicer course that has growing grass through the fairways and onto the greens.
