Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort - Earl of Mar Golf Course
About
Located west of Glasgow, Earl of Mar Golf Club overlooks the River Clyde with views that stretch beyond the Kilpatrick Hills. A scenic forest filled with more than 250 chestnut and beech trees shaped the design of the course, carving the doglegs and framing the greens. It has a traditional parkland layout that offers a fair amount of challenges balanced by generous fairways that are beginner-friendly. Many holes present interesting risk-reward opportunities where good strategy and some skill will get you far, but they are not too punishing if you are slightly errant. Weaving through the trees requires accuracy and numerous strategically placed bunkers emphasize its importance even further. There are only a few holes that play right alongside the river though golfers will enjoy scenic views on almost every hole.

Much Better Deals Elsewhere
There is a long walk to the first tee and the putting green beside it is not very inviting to say the least. The same can be said about the rest of the course.
The tees were in very poor shape, lumpy and uneven with bare patches - a bit like a public course. The grass on the fairways was cut a bit too high and there was very little
run, although conditions were fairly dry. On three or four fairways too, and one right in front of the green, there was a pile of cut grass clippings which you could lose your ball in if you were unlucky! The greens staff hadn't even bothered to pick the stuff up!
There is very little first cut in the rough so if you stray from the fairway you're very quickly up to your knees searching hopelessly for a lost ball.
The greens were a bit worn in places but were mainly satsfactory.
We ate in the hotel after the round and found the prices seriously elevated!
Definitely one to give a miss. There's better and cheaper elsewhere.
Lovely course ruined
Great course and layout. Greens by far worst I’ve seen in long time. Due to this definitely not worth the money
Great Round of Golf
Great course with amazing views. Greens are in excellent condition although some of the fairways need a little tlc but should come good theough the summer.
An enjoyable day ! Course was great and weather was exceptional!
Marhall
My opinion on this course is that it’s a little long but beautiful lay out greens were pure and consistent throughout course , we had really bad weather but course held up well in rain , nowhere to go when heavy showers came on , definitely will be back when weather gets better , staff were amazing and helpful
Brilliant course
Brilliant course and layout. Only thing that bugged me, I was playing by myself, 3 or 4 groups let me play through on the front 9 then got stuck behind a fourball who wouldn’t let me play through. Still a great course in great condition. Would recommend
Great layout but needs some TLC.
I'd been wanting to play Marr Hall for years and finally got a good price on Golf Now. Probably not the bet time of year though, a wet Sunday in February. The course was very wet underfoot, some holes worse than others particularly near the river. The greens were poor and need some maintenance. The bunkers were not raked and I often found my ball in a footprint in the sand. Overall though a lovely layout and I'd imagine a stunning location to play on a summers evening. New owners have taken over the Marr Hall estate so I'm hoping, once the hotel renovations are over, that they turn their attention to the golf course.
Worth the cost
My current course was shut and wanted a game. Looked on GolfNow and found Mar Hall. For £26 a round with my friend it was worth a shot. Course was in good condition considering the poor weather the week before. All the greens on and not on mats plus the bunkers in play. Course was spot on will be back in the summer for an other round.Had heard a few stories about the course but I can say it is on the up and worth a shot.
Will be back for a try in the summer.
Excellent course
Played on a wet weekend in November. The place is undergoing major upgrade works and come summer will be immense. My own course is winter greens so fancied trying somewhere else and can't fault the course given the weather. Will be back
Poor Greens
Greens were so poor
Well laid out flat course
The course has improved since last year, and hopefully with the new investors it will continue to improve
Returned to check it out again !
Significant improvement since playing here last September. Good level of sand in all bunkers, greens good for this time of year. Felt the fairways could however do with a more defining trim. Very friendly staff. Will be back to check out further improvements that are planned for the next six months.
Much better condition
Much better condition since last played a few months ago. Bunkers in great shape and fairways good condition. Greens did look in late season condition however we have had a lot of rain recently.
Disappointing experience
Having booked this course we were really looking forward to playing it knowing the Mar Hall hotel is a 5*. We couldn’t have been left anymore disappointed with the state of the course in all honesty. Walking to the first with a member who explained it had been left in a really bad state for so long the work they are now doing to repair it will take a year or so to get back to normal. The layout of the holes were nice but the greens may aswell been skipped! I don’t think I’ll ever see greens that bad again anywhere I go! A real shame and a warning for anyone going!
Bring your wellies
I had so much expectations to play Mar Hall.
On arrival the club pro is very helpful and informative. I felt it wasn't going to be a great experience when I was told that by winter the course will be a lot better.
There were a lot of issues I found with the course: the tee boxes were in poor condition, the greens were very patchy and bare in parts, also very uneven to putt on.
The fairways look good but the drainage is extremely poor. It has been raining the past few days but not to the extent a well constructed course couldn't handle. Most shots were like playing in a bog. I actually walked off after 14 holes as I feel the course is unplayable in it's current condition.
The paths between holes are not constructed well that your walking through big puddles.
I have played Erkine golf course next door in bad weather and it holds up very well in comparison.
I am extremely disappointed with Mar Hall and will take something special to get me back.
