Southwyck Golf Club
About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Course conditions
Course is in horrendous condition. Fairways have cracks in the ground and will bounce everything out of the cart. Trying to putt on the greens is almost as bad as putting on a gravel road. It’s really sad how bad this course digressed over the years.
Course needs maintenance
A few tees did not have any grasss. The greens were dried out and lumpy. Seeing putts that bounce into the air is not optimal. It will take at least a year to repair the course imho.
Bad
One of the worst courses I've played in a while. Course conditions were abysmal and you're being made to pay full price. Terrible course, do not waste your money or time
Good Value for Average Golfer
Some holes were dug up with what appeared to be water leaks. Some holes there’s no real definition between fairway and rough. And there’s a lot of weeds/crabgrass all over the fairways that do not appear to be being addressed. And I think we encountered 3 greens that were half torn up and uneven with sand and cut grass. I will still play here again but the price has to be right for this kind of conditions.
Surprised and Pleased!
This was the only course in the area that I could find a morning tee time for 3 on this Friday before Memorial Day. After reading some reviews on the course I had very low expectations. Was I ever surprised! This is a fabulous layout and the staff is super friendly.
What I really loved was that anyone can play this course and be challenged. A senior golfer in our group could carry 100 yards and enjoy a good roll out. More experienced golfers can challenge the doglegs and enjoy risk/ reward shots. We all truly loved playing this course. In my opinion, this course should be played from the tips to truly appreciate it.
The good: Greens were in very good condition, properly quick, and consistent with nice roll. Pin placements were fair, but challenging. the out/ back links layout on the front nine is excellent. Nice elevation changes and proper links style playability. Excellent, long and challenging par 3’s and birdieable par 5’s. Super friendly staff!
The bad: I paid over $200 for 3 players on a virtually empty course. At this price point there are numerous better courses in the area. Tee boxes are rough. They need to be leveled and seeded. Serious maintenance is needed on the sprinkler system. Numerous areas swampy due to faulty sprinklers not fully shutting off. Poor course markings and directions.
Overall, we loved it! Truly a gem that we will play many more times. Properly priced, and with a little more maintenance this course could be premier.
Water the course
The course, especially the tees and greens are in rough shape. Several holes had boggy area due to broken sprinklers. I love the layout of the course but the conditions are not worth the price.
Please Close
Please close this course. The staff are extremely friendly and I feel awful they have to deal with disgruntled patrons due to extremely poor course conditions. I wouldn’t pay 10 bucks for a round here. Please just sell the property to a developer and quit taking peoples money.
Average
We’re casual golfers and thought $100 for two of us was a good deal. The course is not maintained, which was expected. However, for the conditions, I think $80 for two of us would’ve been a more acceptable rate.
greens could use a little work other than that it’s okay
Dreadful
This course is a disaster. Like playing in a pasture. Maintenance non-existent. Weeds everywhere, unmowed in over a week. Fairway rough as heck. Very little markings for directions. No water, Restrooms, ball cleaners, or beer girls seen the entire time we played (8am-12 on a Sunday). Can't buy beer without a meal purchase before noon. The course has a lot of potential, but needs new management and a big time makeover. The location is Great, but Won't be back
UGH.
The course is in poor condition. There are pools of water near the greens that would normally be grass bunkers. There are sprinkler head leaks near the greens. This course was in fantastic shape when the UH golf team played there. It isn't anywhere near that condition now.
Conditions improving.
Conditions on the greens are improving. Still a few tee boxes with zero grass. About 5-6 greens still need to get better. But can tell progress is being made. Still overpriced for the conditions. If you get the super saver it’s priced right on.
WORST GOLF COURSE IN HTX?
Terrible greens and a sorry staff they are very understaffed at most times food isn’t handled well AT ALL they also have rats and roaches needs a health inspection ASAP
Rough shape
What used to be a solid course is now in unplayable shape. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens are covered in weeds and sand. Not worth the money and hopefully course can one day be saved.
It is what it is
It was a last minute booking on my end. Golf is golf so it’s never not fun. Could just be that I’ve been spoiled by other courses, but missing simple things felt prominent.
It ended up being hilarious near the end, but the gas carts combined with bumpy fairways had everything flying off the carts. Also, there aren’t any signs depicting the yardage or layout of the holes by the tee boxes, nor any water stations or trashcans. Again, this may just be a luxury I’ve grown accustomed to.
Ms. Birdie and the shop staff were gems in my opinion. Loved the comfortable atmosphere they created. I likely would not play this course again, but if I do at least I know exactly what to expect. Hope this review helps.
