Southwyck Golf Club
About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Green Hole 1 05/14/16 Photo submitted by garbergr on 05/19/2016
Green conditions were beyond seasonal neglect… putting was IMPOSSIBLE
I feel the course has or had potential but if the greens aren’t being actively repaired it should be communicated to incoming players that the green surfaces are riddled with weeds and hard crab grass patches. The staff was friendly, other players were friendly but the hard terrain and the greens would keep me from coming back any time soon.
Overpriced and poorly maintained
The greens are poorly kept and totally unpredictable. Fairways are in rough shape as well. For a $70 green fee my group felt like this was pretty unacceptable, especially considering we played in the springtime when the course should be in reasonably good condition
Staff Great
Disabled Veteran, staff very respectful and
helpful. Enjoyed the experience.
Close it.
Hot deal 16 bucks i was thinking how bad could it be ??
Oh my its a train wreck. I read the reviews and some people paid 40 dollars to play here lol. Play here on a hot deal just to see how not to maintain a golf course. Let me know what you think….
Dissapointing
Had played several years back and enjoyed the layout. Course condition has gone horribly downhill . Impossible to drive a cart in any fairway due to how rough it is. Greens covered in weeds .. No Marshall ot effort to improve pace of play . We actually just left midway through the round. It was just too frustrating . Really sad what has happened to the course. Would never go back. Avoid
What happened???
I've played Southwyck probably a half-dozen times over the last 10 years and this is the worst condition I've ever seen it in. The course just looks bad. There were maintenance workers running mowers and whatnot, but it appears neglected. I haven't been since COVID, and maybe that destroyed their business, but it definitely isn't what I remember. There were not even any hole markers at the tee boxes. The course feels ok at the 20 something hot deal price. It felt overpriced at 39 on a weekday. There is no way this is a $50+ round on the weekend.
Lack of maintenance
I played Southwyck last weekend and was looking forward to it as I had not played the course in about 5 years. I enjoyed playing there many times in the past as the course was always in decent shape. I'm not sure what happened over the last 5 years but there has been a drastic lack of maintenance to the fairways and greens. The majority of my shots from the fairways were like hitting off hardpan and the greens were full of small weeds that would affect most of our putts.
The shocker was the amount of money they charge with the course in such bad condition. You can pay the same amount to play other nearby courses where the fairways and greens are immaculate compared to Southwyck.
Somebody please save this course!
What used to be the premier golf course in the area is now a disaster. last played two years ago and thought that it could not get worse. paid $68!! for the round! Looked to me it was way under staffed today. Greens were horrendous. No ball wash stations. No beverage cart. fairways were terrible. Since the last time i played, there are now moguls throughout the fairways. Needless to say it's a rough ride to get around now. Sprinkler heads leaking all over the course. My tee time was aroung 8ish. there were about ten cars in the parking lot.
Somebody please save this course! Southwyck used to be a beautiful layout.
Like the layout, but the fairways were in below average shape and the greens were in terrible condition.
Better than expected
Think most of the bad reviews are folks who watch the PGA and expect every $40-50 green fee course to look like pebble beach on tournament week. Yes probably 3 of the greens are pretty bad. And a tee box or two get missed by the sprinklers maybe. But overall for $45 with a cart it’s fair on a Friday. Not unlike any other course in this price range. If we were ranking $50 or less courses in HOU TX this definitely wouldn’t be last.
Go somewhere else
Go somewhere else that’s worth it. I don’t know where to begin…
I’ll start by saying for the green fee I paid it’s and what the course was doesn’t match up. There’s other courses that are better and half the price of this place.
No ball washing stations anywhere! tee boxes where junk, most couldn’t identify. Greens were just as bumpy as the fairways not smooth. Both tee boxes and greens had large/tall weeds.
On top of the none existent ball washes, no water coolers, and no beverage cart.
Again there’s way cheaper places that offer better amenities and conditions than this place. They aren’t worth the $50 green fees that I paid, I would even pay $40.
TLC Needed
The course needs TLC. Fairways are super bumpy and uneven, tee boxes were overgrown with weeds and tall grass, and greens have weeds that will ruin any kind of putting line over them.
It appeared they were doing some landscaping work in a few areas, but mainly the tee boxes needed to be maintained a bit more and there were a ton of weeds everywhere!
Opening duration
Limited by the park this course is located, last tee time at 1:00pm is way too early.
Disappointing
The fairways on the front 9 were as rough as I have seen, teeth jarring! There was not much green grass, granted we had a freeze a couple of weeks ago. The greens were slow and in rough condition. Overall, we found the course disappointing.
