Southwyck Golf Club
About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Green Hole 1 05/14/16 Photo submitted by garbergr on 05/19/2016
The course
The course it’s self is amazing! The layout is amazing. However to greens need work, lots of weeds and basically holes. Fairways are open and great just seem to have the same surface as the moon. I do really enjoy this course just wish I was better kept.
Great course
Course conditions are continuously improving. Nicest staff in the world.
So much potential
The layout of this course is great. There are small greens that require solid approach shots and there are opportunities to take risks and hit longer tee shots. The greens, however, are just in atrocious shape -- you simply cannot read any putt longer than 8 feet, because there are so many weeds and dead spots.
Bad news
The course is fine when the conditions are right. The freeze had a little to with the greens but they are seldom much better
Karen
Not sure who she was, she ran to us digging through our stuff claiming we had alcohol beverages after I told her we don’t have coolers or drinks. Then she took my range balls I was going to practice with after we ended the course. Explained to her it was for practice, I do it all the time I’m a member at the Pearland Golf Club so it’s not like I’m poor like she called us. She wasn’t very fair and ruined our good vibes to say the least.
Greens are terrible
All greens were covered in little crab grass . You can watch your ball bounce on putts. Frustrating
Awful
Do not waste your time and money going here. The front 9 is awful. You need a 4x4 golf cart the manage the fairways and the greens have so many weeds they are unputtable. Putting is like playing plinko on the price is right! Back 9 is slightly better but not by much. Also, no soap in men’s room. Had to get hand sanitizer out of golf bag.
Good course for price
Green had some weed randomly but overall green speed was decent. Fairways were also decent condition. Water hazards on many holes. No bunkers at all on any hole.
Goat pasture
It’s really sad to see just how far this course has declined over the years. It’s obvious they are putting no money into maintaining the greens. I wouldn’t be surprised if the course is not open within the year.
Nothing has changed
Same course different year. Greens are still in horrible shape think of bumpy hard pan. Fair ways are dry and cracked. Too bumpy to really ride down to look for your ball. Pace of play wasn’t great. Ended up in a traffic jam waiting 5-7 minutes each tee box to tee off.
I wouldn’t pay more than $20 to play there again. Not$63, not $44.
Course just needs to be renovated.
Still needs work
This course has been needing an upgrade for a while now. I believe they are working at it and keeping the faith. Fairways are bumpy.
Enjoyed the round of Golf.
Southwyck is a good value for the round of golf. The pace of play was quite acceptable, and the course conditions were not bad at all.
I will be back for another round.
Great value… love the course layout
Fairways need work. All clay that is cracked and extremely bumpy. I hit a drive down the center of a fairway, when it hit the fairway there were cracks and my ball kicked 90 degrees to the right. My ball went 30 yards to the right into the water. Kind of a poor result for a good r free I’ve. The greens were fast and very true to putt. Again, I love the course, it u st Ned’s some TLC on the fairways.
