Southwyck Golf Club
About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Green Hole 1 05/14/16 Photo submitted by garbergr on 05/19/2016
Course has potential if managed
It is by far the most affordable course, but you get what you paid for it! If they could just clean up the greens at least it would dramatically improve the value factor. There are grass spouts all over the greens causing the ball to bounce all over the place.
Like I said if I’m looking for a cheap round, I’m coming here!!
NEVER AGAIN
Once the most awesome course in the area to a complete disappointment. Tee boxes are terrible, fairways are terrible, it's like hitting in
the rough and the greens are unplayable. The irrigation system hasn't worked properly in years. They have one working tractor for the course, the maintenance crew does what they can but it's not enough. It's really sad they have such wonderful employees. I've been member and loyal patron for 20 years, but NEVER AGAIN
Needs some TLC
Great for playing with new golfers or family outings but not for the serious golfer. Conditions are slightly better but this course needs some mainten
It is a nice designed course.
It is very fun to play at this course but i feel so bad that this course has not been maintained good condition.
Regret Playing
Greens were in rough shape. Augustine patches on the greens. Rough was high, uncut for most of the course. Pace was slow. Multiple groups of 5 was allowed on the course. Tee times were 10 minutes apart.
Good Layout but needs Maintenance
Good course, nice Layout, but needs some TLC / Maintenance.
Good for price
They’re starting to do better maintenance. Good value for price
Oh no!
It looks like the organization is moving closer to bankruptcy based on the condition of the golf course. Weeds are stronger than bermudagrass, so they are even populating the greens now. Maybe they can find some teens with no jobs and have them pluck weeds offf the greens. Just a thought. I recommend the course only because they need the revenue. The back 9 isn't too bad. Look at the picture from the glory days back in the 90s.
Will never play here again
This course was severely upkept. You can have a drive down the fairway and lose the ball still in the TALL GRASS ON THE FAIRWAY. You hit it anywhere in the rough, you might as well forget it, its gone!
Unplayable!
Course is in horrendous shape. Balls were being lost in the fairways due to 2”+ grass and large cracks in the ground wide enough for golf balls to drop into. Fairways and rough are impassable for carts due to how bumpy they are. Seriously couldn’t even putt on the greens they were so rough. The pins were cut into the only small (6-8 foot circle) area possible on each green. The young man in the clubhouse said nothing about the poor conditions nor were there any signs or messages to the players about its playability. Really sad and quite frustrating. Highly recommend GolfNow drops them from the app until they improve course conditions.
Better Maintenance
Staff was friendly and very helpful for our first outing there. Ease of booking on GolfNow was great. Nice early tee time. Course wasn’t overly crowded…
However, the fairways were overgrown to the point we spent more time searching for our hits than playing…on MULTIPLE holes. Rough was over grown or worse, with clippings still left out on the lanes. Greens were patchy and full of crab grass. Fringe was a similar state of disrepair as green.
Saw the beverage cart twice in 18 holes when it’s was over 100 degrees outside.
I wouldn’t recommend this place to friends and we will be staying away until we hear better reviews.
Course has a great layout. Tons of challenges and fair levels of difficulty for our group. We truly believe this course would be four to five stars, but the maintenance really needs to be up kept.
Would not waste my time golfing here…
I’m not sure what’s going on with this course. The fairways are always bumpy but now they’re letting the grass grow high in the fairways. We lost balls in the fairways, but we found other peoples balls that were left out there. I would call the fairways a first cut most other places and there was grass clumps everywhere. The greens were made up of bare spots and weeds. We stopped after 9.
Southwyck Needs Upkeep
None of the holes have actual fairways - and the “fairways” are littered with holes, or continuous bumps. The greens are not maintained and have thick patches of grass on greens. Whoever cuts the grass just leaves the dead grass clippings all throughout the course. All the while, the course charges $60 for a round. Will not be returning. Especially since other local or municipal courses, in better condition, only cost $30-$45.
Needs care
I have played this course quite a few times and like the layout, however, the summer heat has really taken a toll. Greens are partially bare and have lots of weeds on them. Fairways has large cracks due to lack of water.
Idk what happened
It's apparent that whomever was caring for this course, is no longer with them. Lost balls in the fairway, multiple times. Greens look like chest hairs. When grass was cut, the clippings were left.
Thank you for your review! We're pleased to hear you noticed the improvements in maintenance and find value in our pricing. We look forward to your next visit to Southwyck Golf Club!
