Southwyck Golf Club
About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Terrible condition
Course looked really rough. lost balls in the “fairway” due to extremely long grass. greens are half dead with crab grass growing. tee boxes are hard as a rock. i won’t be playing here again. do not waste your money.
Course is in bad shape
Course is in bad shape, neglected honestly. Could not even tell where fairways began and ended. Needs mowing. Greens in bad shape. Will not play here again.
Just horrible
I have played this course since it opened way back years ago. This is the worst it’s ever looked in my entire life. The greens were free. They were bumpy Sandy, which had crabgrass growing in it. The fairways were so thick we lost our balls in the fairway. The course is definitely needs major mowing major weed killing. They also need to pick up the grass that they dumped after they mow.
The fairways were also horrible because they need to be rolled. They’re so bumpy. You will probably throw out your back after driving 100 yards.. The most odd thing of all was there are no water jugs anywhere on the course so if you didn’t bring your own water, you’re gonna die. I’m sorry to write a bad review. The management was very kind and they gave us all rain checks for rounds in the future but they gotta get their act together.
Links style course in poor condition
We had a foursome last weekend and were lines up 5 groups deep on the tee box because of a raind delay. That's understandable.... but the course is in HORRIBLE shape (mostly on the front 9). I know there was a hurricane followed by a good bit of rain, but it has been over a month. I live on a different course and the mowing was the first repair made. This course had weeds 24" tall.... IN THE FAIRWAYS. The greens were recently punched on the front nine, but they didn't blow off the excess sand and instead chose to mow, making the greens fuzzy and super slow. If you missed the fairway by just a few feet (normally a first or second cut of rough), your ball was likely lost, again just feet off the fairway, due to 12+" of grass. Give this course another month or so. Still behind on maintenance and not worth the money right now.
Good Course
I like the challenge and conditions have improved greatly. Good work
Not worth it
This place used to be a good value. It’s really bad now. Not worth it unless you’re paying maybe $15 and even then I’d probably spend more to play elsewhere. They don’t mow/trim anything off the fairways so it’s nothing but weeds and very tall grass (and not like “natural areas” it’s just unkept and trash). Even in the fairway there are patches of weeds and tall grass everywhere. You will basically lose almost every ball that isn’t on the fairway or green and even probably lose some balls you hit onto the fairway (we did on multiple holes) I’m shocked they have the audacity to charge $50+ for this place on a weekend. Delusional.
Basic maintenance
The greens are as bad as i have ever seen. Like sandy old shag carpet. Head scratcher for sure. This is such a great layout, but the basic maintenance is not being performed.
So Dissapointed.
I’ve played on this course so many times, I’m currently on Hole 4 and I don’t know if this round is going to be playable. There is crabgrass all over the fairways, the fairways are the bumpiest golf course I’ve ever played on, the rough is unkept, and the greens are freshly aerated. This is by far the worst experience I’ve had on this course and I’ve only just begun. This place looks as if they take no pride in the product they put out, I’d be shocked if they currently have a landscaper hired. Very disappointed. Won’t be coming back for a while, this place needs to straighten itself out. How are you not in best golf condition in the middle of the summer? They must not care for their product.
Terrible - I Want My Money Back
Worst conditions I ever played on before, and that is saying something because I have played here several times. Tall grass (over a foot long) in the middle of the fairways. Greens were sand traps essentially as the air rated and sanded the greens in the past few weeks. After the first hole, I stopped putting. There was no point. After the 5th hole, I just picked up and left the course. Not worth wasting my day playing on unbelievably bad conditions. They honestly should not be able to say that they are a “golf course.” I want my money back and never going back to the course again.
Unplayable
Left after 9. Overgrown grass in fairways. Greens and tee boxes are terrible. Hope they work out these issues. We have enjoyed the course in the past.
Course needs a lot of work
The course was overgrown with weeds, tee boxes were in poor shape.
Southwick
Grass not cut, no ball washer on the course, no cold water in the course to drink.
Poor Course Conditions
The course was not well maintained. Grass not cut. Holes not marked well. This was a poor experience.
Terrible conditions
The course conditions were terrible!! Course was in need of being cut. The fairways needed cutting badly and the greens as well. I understand that a hurricane struck a week ago but if course is in this bad of shape it needs to be closed until able to be maintained!!
