Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.

Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.

The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.

No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.

Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Not Worth the Money

This course is in horrible condition. You can have a perfect hit in the middle of the fairway but never find the ball because the grass is probably 7” long and uncut. The greens are in such bad condition putting is impossible. Not a single water jug on the entire course had water so if you plan on playing here bring extra balls and your own water.

Course needs lots of work

This course has seen better days. And surely will again, when management/investors pay attention to it again.

Greens are awful-- full of crabgrass. To try legitimate putts, we had to move the ball to a line that was not full of crabgrass.

The fairways are in dire need of water and flattening out.

Not returning until there is improvement.

Course is hurt

Grass is dead, weeds in greens. No wonder there are tee times open all day on the weekend.

Shoddy Southwyck

Course lacks an adequate irrigation system. Greens were infested with strange grass, bumpy or sporing bald spots in dire need of attention. The uneven ride across the fairways was jarring. Hard, sunbaked fairways precluded taking a divot. Didn't expect much for lower tier green fees, but this course requires an extensive renovation to recapture past glory.

Course is entering point of no return!

I live near Southwyck and have watched the course die a slow death over the past 10 yrs and after seeing it yesterday I fear it's nearing the point of no return. Conditions are already so bad that it would likely take an entire year of TLC and no play to bring it back. I can't understand how they think they can attract a buyer by making the course look as terrible as possible. I'm including some pics of what used to be the 17th green. It's so sad to see such gross mis-management of a once beautiful course.

Waste of money

By far the most poorly maintained course in Houston. $65 for disgusting fairways, perfect tee shots being difficult to find. Greens are very poor and filled with weeds. The course has potential with such a great layout with cool holes and good water features but the poor quality makes it a waste of time and money. I will not be coming back unless i hear there has been a significant change

Greens are terrible

This place needs a full remodel. The fairways are brutal and the greens have weeds all over them. No water jugs to refill anywhere, tee boxes are dirt. The layout is challenging and you can see that it was once a great course. Just not worth the $60 green fee unless you can't get on anywhere else.

Poorly maintained

Course needs major attention. Extremely dry. Greens full of crabgrass. Fairways are so dry that ground is cracked and very rough. There were fairways that you had to barely move in the cart because it was so bumpy.

No recommendation presently

T-spots were firm eventually no gras at all. Most Fairways were like unmowed meadows and bumpy like offroads. Greens were bumpy and uneven, no chance to putt. The layout is good and with potential and the staff very friendly. Once ball areas are back to allow playing golf this course could be a choice.

What a waste

Greens in terrible condition. Fairways are horrible. What a huge waste of time and money. What exactly are green fees going towards here because they definitely aren't going towards care of this course. The fairways are like driving across the bumpiest off road trails you can find. Balls being lost in high grass in the middle of the fairway. Cart girl appeared one time the entire round, at the 2nd hole. This course is an embarrassment to its potential. I'd give it 0 stars if that was an option.

Terrible

This course was terrible, had definitely gone downhill!! The conditions are terrible! Greens are so bad that you can’t putt on them, highly unkept! Get whiplash driving in the fairways, haven’t been watered and grass is brown! Heard they are trying to sell. If this is so, just close until it’s determined what’s going to be done to this course, so sad!!

Very bad condition

This course has not been taken care of. The fairways are full of tall grass with maintenance being done in the fairways as well. Can't find your ball even if you hit it straight down the middle. Greens are sandy and full of little grass patches throughout.

Too Bad

This course is a diamond in the rough - emphasis on rough.

The course is well designed and has all of the makings of a fantastic experience. Unfortunately, the conditions of the course were pathetic, from the fairways to the greens and everything in between.

If they would get serious about groundskeeping and invest some much needed capital into improvements, Southwyck would be a go-to course. I won't be back until that happens.
