Southwyck Golf Club
About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Sad State of affairs
This used to be one of the prime courses in Houston, and it's really sad to see what it has become. The front nine are practically unplayable. The layout is so awesome that players would be willing to pay more for this course, if it was restored to its original state
Straight down hill
This course used to be nice in the 90’s and poor management ruined this course. The practice facility is atrocious, the greens are completely gone, and the fairways are the bumpiest thing I’ve ever been on. I wouldn’t even pay $30 to play this course. Would rather save my money and buy a 12pk and a quesadilla from Taco Bell.
Mow/Water Fairways
Fairways need to be mowed, front nine fairways were indistinguishable between 1st cut of rough on some holes. Very bumpy needs water and leveling
We apologize for the condition of the fairways during your visit. We appreciate your feedback and will take your comments into consideration to improve our course. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Course needs work!
Have played Southwyck for many years and normally a good course with reasonable pricing. However, this course needs some attention to get back on track!
Thank you for your feedback. We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced and appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Thank you for your continued support of our golf course.
“PLINKO” Greens
This course is abysmal. Some tee boxes had ankle high grass, the fairways are bumpy (plan on seeing a chiropractor after riding a cart on them), full of weeds (I know there has been a drought but pearland GC is better maintained what’s your excuse), the greens are som riddled with dry patches, fungus of some type that it was like playing plinko. Ok it was $29.00, and you can see why. The cart had no brakes, so I had to make sure I was on level ground, there’s no GPS in the carts, the cashier is not very friendly, the rough is overgrown, the bunkers are just huge weed traps because the bunkers have been filled in. It just a bad course. The only positives, the range and the chipping and putting green that’s it.
We apologize for the negative experience you had at our golf course. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration to improve our maintenance and customer service. Thank you for leaving a review.
Avoid at all costs
Complete waste of money. Southwyck could not be worse in all categories right now.
Green and tee boxes are more sandy and ripped up than they are grass. Fairways are quite literally a joke. Entire course is huge cracks and craters you can barely even drive a cart through, need a seatbelt because its like you’re driving through the trenches. No signs or markings for any hole on the whole course.
Cherry on top was getting a sandwich at the clubhouse, employee says they’ll bring it to us on the course, tip them well and leave, it never shows up. Cart girl came by once the whole round, ask her if she had the sandwich, didn’t know what we were talking about.
Without a doubt the worst course I’ve ever played in terms of conditions, and the whole experience was awful. I wouldn’t play it again if they paid me to.
Seriously spend your money elsewhere, boycott the management that let it fall into this state, and don’t punish yourself.
We apologize for your negative experience at Southwyck Golf Course. We appreciate your feedback and we are sorry to hear about the poor course conditions as well as the service issues you encountered. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention.
Cracked Course, very bumpy
I think the prolonged summer heat has dried the course out and large cracks have appeared. Also little attention paid to the course to correct these issues. If driving the cart on the course itself you'll find it to be very bumpy and again no attention paid to fix. Would of been a nice course in its prime.
Thank you for sharing your feedback about our golf course. We apologize for any negative experience you had with the condition of the course, particularly the dryness, cracks, and bumps. We appreciate your review and will take your comments into consideration as we strive to improve.
In terrible repair
Old propane carts with ripped seats and broken parking brakes. Tragically unmowed everywhere. Fairways are worse than a cow Pasture and greens are in disarray. A wonderful layout, and a great track of land that has unfortunately not been taken care of. Staff was very nice.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We apologize for the negative experience you had with our golf course. We appreciate your feedback and will use it to improve our facilities and services. Thank you for acknowledging our friendly staff.
Needs A Lot Of Work
Talking to other golfers at Southwyck, the overall sentiment is "they just don't care". They meaning Southwyck. Let me say, the staff is always nice and friendly. No issue with them. It's the course. It fits the "goat ranch" moniker. To their defense, thr Houston area went through an extremely hot and dry summer. The course was no match for the heat. Even after some recent rains the cracks in the fairways are everywhere. You feel beat down driving your cart with all the bumps on the course. I played recently and the grass is a mess with weeds taking over. The greens have gone downhill as well. I've played here close to 10 times in 2023 with the last time being the worst. Also, they don't have water available to drink on the course, so be prepared. Lastly, the clubhouse is showing it's age. The bathroom are in need or repair and updating. One of the 3 stalls didn't have a lock on it. The only thing that has kept me coming out there are the hot deals, but I think I'm going to stick to other courses and hope they get this course and clubhouse back to where it needs to be.

Needs water badly
This course used to be a gem, now it’s just a below average muni. The cracks are so big in the fairway you can easily loose balls. Greens are good but I’m sorry it’s not worth $59 on weekends. I’ve been playing this course for 23 years and my disappointment level is very high.
We apologize for any disappointment you experienced during your recent visit to our golf course. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration as we continue to improve and maintain the quality of our course. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
Ughhe
The only time I’ve ever lost a golf ball in the center of a fairway. Not just 1 ball but 2. The fairways have so many huge cracks and crevices in them that it makes it impossible to find a golf ball should it roll into them.
Riding a golf cart in the fairways is as uncomfortable as riding in the ruff or maybe even worse. I know it has been hot and very little rain this summer but give a small bit of responsibility to the maintenance crews.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you experienced during your visit to our golf course. We appreciate your feedback and will address the maintenance issues to ensure a better golfing experience in the future. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review.
Better than before, but not great
The woman at the front desk is great, very polite, same with the woman that was driving the bev cart, as well as the marshall.
Course conditions were a mixed bag. The greens were in pretty good condition, way better than the last time I played here. The fairways were awful though, giant cracks and craters everywhere. They should’ve have given us 4x4’s instead of normal golf carts.
On the second hole, my whole group watched my tee shot bounce and roll in the center of the fairway, but when we drove up it was nowhere to be found, likely falling into one of the crevices.
Place of play was rough on the front 9, it took 2.5 hours, but the marshall handled it well and we flew through the back 9 in less than 2 hours.
The bev cart was well stocked, but it’s rough not having any bathrooms or water out on the course.
For the right price I wouldn’t certainly play here again, but there’s some serious work to be done.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your experience at our golf course. We appreciate your kind words about our staff members and are glad you enjoyed the greens. We apologize for the condition of the fairways and any inconvenience it may have caused. We will take your feedback into consideration to improve our course.
Don’t waste your money
The course is in horrific condition! There are craters and cracks all throughout the fairways.
We apologize for the poor condition of our golf course and the inconvenience it may have caused you. We appreciate your feedback and will work hard to address the issues you mentioned. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review.
Skip this course
Course was in poor condition from the heat. There were countless earthen cracks in the fairways that swallow golf balls. Greens were not smooth. No water on the course. What, in this heat? The two employees behind the concession counter were very not friendly.

Golfing during a drought
The end of September in Southeast Texas can be extremely hot and humid, as it was last Friday, but we are also dealing with a drought of several weeks, so there were cracks in the turf, but fairways and rough, as well as some damage to the cart paths. I always enjoy playing at Southwyck and I feel for the management who have to deal with what Mother Nature doles out these days!
Thanks so much for your review. We're so glad you enjoyed your round at Southwyck Golf Club. That's what we like to hear! We hope to see you again soon!
Used to be a good course
They are putting zero money in this course unfortunately. The clubhouse is dirty and dated. The golf carts are in bad shape. The 2nd hole looked like an earthquake happened. The back 9 was better. I haven’t played there in 3 years and now I k ow why. Started playing this course back in the late 90’s. Sad to see in its current condition
We sincerely apologize for the poor condition of our clubhouse, golf carts, and the 2nd hole. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration as we strive to improve our course. Thank you for sharing your experience.
We would love to hear more about your experience on our course. Thanks for golfing at Southwyck Golf Club!
