Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.

Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.

The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.

No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.

Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Carts a bouncing

Played with my son and his FIL

Started at 1 and finished at 5:10. Ran into a slow down from 11 to 14 and then it cleared up.

Greens were hard as a rock and were in general as lly rough shape. The greens were fast and hard to read in flat light. Every flag was black, so yo you had no indication of pin placement. They were were hard to see too.

The fairways were a mix of rutted with low-lying wet portions. Drive the cart across them and it felt like rodeo training. My water bottle flew out at one point.

Lots of water and houses on the course.

We found more balls than we lost.

We still had fun

Great layout and decent condition

The course was in average condition, the fairways are still a little rough and very bumpy and hills from drying up this summer. The greens looked terrible but they rolled just fine and were reasonably fast. Rest of the course was in good shape

Beware of the fairways

Front side fairways are ROUGH and easy to lose balls, even hit right down the middle. Lots of holes and craters from uneven ground.

Course has improved

I swore off this course on my last review, but gave it another shot because of a cheap hot deal. The course conditions were a lot better than a month ago. The fairway cracks caused by the summer heat have gotten better. The overgrown areas in the rough and elsewhere have been taken care of as well since my last play. The back 9 is in better shape than the front. Pace of play was pretty good on the Friday morning I played. Certainly not a great course, but glad to see them put some work on it. They have gotten brand new carts, so that was also an added bonus. Friendly, accommodating staff. Southwyck is back in my rotation.

Poor condition for the moner.

Course was in poor shape. Even after rain earth cracks everywhere in fairway.. wasn't even mowed. Greens are decent but they. Charged way too much. 52.00. Complete lack of attention to conditions.

COW PASTURE

surprised we didn’t lose our golf cart in the massive caverns in the fairways. The greens had crabgrass growing all over them. Worse corse I’ve played in years. Won’t be back or recommend this to my worst enemy !!

Sad State of affairs

This used to be one of the prime courses in Houston, and it's really sad to see what it has become. The front nine are practically unplayable. The layout is so awesome that players would be willing to pay more for this course, if it was restored to its original state

Straight down hill

This course used to be nice in the 90’s and poor management ruined this course. The practice facility is atrocious, the greens are completely gone, and the fairways are the bumpiest thing I’ve ever been on. I wouldn’t even pay $30 to play this course. Would rather save my money and buy a 12pk and a quesadilla from Taco Bell.

Mow/Water Fairways

Fairways need to be mowed, front nine fairways were indistinguishable between 1st cut of rough on some holes. Very bumpy needs water and leveling

“PLINKO” Greens

This course is abysmal. Some tee boxes had ankle high grass, the fairways are bumpy (plan on seeing a chiropractor after riding a cart on them), full of weeds (I know there has been a drought but pearland GC is better maintained what’s your excuse), the greens are som riddled with dry patches, fungus of some type that it was like playing plinko. Ok it was $29.00, and you can see why. The cart had no brakes, so I had to make sure I was on level ground, there’s no GPS in the carts, the cashier is not very friendly, the rough is overgrown, the bunkers are just huge weed traps because the bunkers have been filled in. It just a bad course. The only positives, the range and the chipping and putting green that’s it.

Avoid at all costs

Complete waste of money. Southwyck could not be worse in all categories right now.

Green and tee boxes are more sandy and ripped up than they are grass. Fairways are quite literally a joke. Entire course is huge cracks and craters you can barely even drive a cart through, need a seatbelt because its like you’re driving through the trenches. No signs or markings for any hole on the whole course.

Cherry on top was getting a sandwich at the clubhouse, employee says they’ll bring it to us on the course, tip them well and leave, it never shows up. Cart girl came by once the whole round, ask her if she had the sandwich, didn’t know what we were talking about.

Without a doubt the worst course I’ve ever played in terms of conditions, and the whole experience was awful. I wouldn’t play it again if they paid me to.

Seriously spend your money elsewhere, boycott the management that let it fall into this state, and don’t punish yourself.
