About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Greens need work
Can’t complain too much for the price. The staff is always excellent and friendly. The greens are nowhere near as good as Pearland golf club.

Perfect hot dog at the grill
Bumpy yet dry and fast greens invaded by poanna and some slow play by foursomes looming for lost golf balls like they were missing family heirlooms. Hey it’s ok to waive waiting golfers through! That all said, this course is a Friday gem on offering fair prices from a cheerful staff. Fun links style layout. Of you are looking to work on your sand shots move along…bunkers are grassed in.

Course is in terrible shape
I’ll preface this review by reminding you it’s mid March and spring has only just kicked off. However, the turf conditions are only the tip of the iceberg. The fairways severely need to be graded (leveled). Drive your cart across them and you’ll definitely be getting out to re-secure your bag if you’ve exceeding 2 mph. The tee box dirt:grass ratio probably sits somewhere around 4:1. Greens & fringe have some type of fungus resulting in baseball-sized patches of thick, line-altering sprouts of grass literally every square foot of the putting surface and surrounding areas. The bunkers look like bunkers from WW1. No sand whatsoever. Just mud and dirt. We paid for 18 on a sunny day 73°, unanimously decided to leave after 9. Positive takeaway, staff was friendly,

The Greens in terrible shape I’ve played this course many times in the past years and course maintenance is slacking . Don’t think I’ll be coming back anytime to soon . the layout of the course is nice

Good course, good value
Played the course about 2 years ago when they were taking out bunkers. The grass bunkers have come in nicely. Overall course I’m good shape, greens and tee boxes need a little work. Staff always friendly.

If you enjoy no sand bunkers this is your course
All the sand bunkers have all been removed. Was extremely weird to play a game of 18 with no sand. Which was why I enjoyed the course the most with so many challenging holes with bunkers all around the greens.

Course needs work.
I have played Southwyck for decades and I have seen it go through stages of good/bad conditions.
These days, the fairways NEED water and some smoothing, because driving a cart on ant fairway puts the health of your back in jeopardy.
In addition, at least half the greens are just plain awful.
I hope the poor conditions are transient and that management will allow proper maintenance soon.

Decent Greens
The course is in winter conditions, but the greens are not bad right now. There are some bad spots and there is either crabgrass or poa annua growing on the greens, but overall it's not bad. I've certainly played on worse greens. Overall, the course was in decent shape and I look forward to playing later in the year when it's not in winter conditions.

Good neighborhood course
Nice links style course with undulating fairways winding through neighborhoods. Nice layout, but not exceptionally challenging. I score about 10 strokes better here than my home course. No bathrooms are available out on the course, and the clubhouse closed at 5:30pm.

Winter conditions
Greens disappointing, the little weed blooms are a real issue, ball bounces like a pin ball on a putt. It looked like they had recently sprayed, hope that does the trick…. Fairways very very dry and dormant. Need some rain and weed control…. A little rough!
