About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Not a 5 star but not bad
It was my first time there, Fairways were hard and dry, greens were fast and many were being repaired, few signage giving directions, staff was friendly but restaurant only had hot dogs, course could be fantastic if investment was made to bring it up a bit. I will play again, it’s a challenging course with lots of water, overall it wasn’t a total disappointment.

Rallied at turn
A cheeseburger and a beer, plus moving up to the gray tees after number 10 enabled a strong finish. It was cart path only with good reason. Moving up was a good idea as I was losing 30 yards to the wet grounds…getting maybe two yards of roll. The greens were still very good. It was good to get some more golf in ahead of the weather.

Down over last few weeks
Course was little better last time I played here. Not worry about the bumpy fairways but grass very inconsistent.
Don’t mind sand traps bring removed and replaced with grassy areas. However if you save money by removing sand, how about putting some care on the greens. They look green but not sure what’s under the green color.
Played this course from day one and love to continue playing in the future!!

Greens need some work
Overall the course was in decent shape for the middle of January. Only issue we had was with the weed growth on the greens.

Best cheeseburgers at the turn
First day after a rain and the staff was on top of course conditions. When I first showed it was cart path only on the back nine. By the time I was about to head out to my cart, they passed word that it was 90 degrees from the cart path for the whole course. I was careful not to run over any wet spots, otherwise I got normal roll on the fairways and the greens were excellent. Pace was so good, I had time for a great cheeseburger at the grill. The 12 minute wait was worth it…fresh and hot with fixings on the side. I was able to maintain my usual quick pace and played well. Tees were well placed for the northerly winds. Can’t wait to play Southwyck again soon.

Very slow pace of play. Rarely saw the Marshall trying to accelerate the pace

Lightning fast greens lead to slow play
Someone got overly aggressive on shaving the greens. They were impossible to putt when faced with downhill putts. The resulting slow play produced a round taking four and a half hours, forcing our foursome to finish the last hole in dark…and causing me a couple of lost golf balls. I do enjoy the layout and I’m a big fan of how you get people organized before teeing off. Great cheese burgers.

Dry Run
Course needs water badly. Greens were like glass with no way to stop them. It was like hitting shots off mates at Top Golf your club would bounce off the turf.
